In Anne Bradstreet’s, “The Prologue”, Anne talks about the struggles she has as being a woman in a colony dominated by men and their all their good deeds.




The poem, in the first verse, starts off praising the conquests of men throughout the years. In such lines as

To sing of wars, of captains, and of kings,

Of cities founded, commonwealths begun,

For my mean pen are too superior things

Anne is humbled to the exploits that men have contributed to mankind. In the latter verses, she then continues on to talk about how women have been overlooked as only the kind to cook, sew, and work around the house. An example of this being in this quote

I am obnoxious to each carping tongue

Who says my hand a needle better fits,

A poet’s pen all scorn I should this wrong,

For such despite they cast on female wits

Anne ends the poem still adamantly comparing men to women. In the last verses of the poem, she talks about how men are very boisterous about their great deeds and record them in their own writings, but that women also know they can do just as well as men can. She also ends the poem with,

It is but vain to unjustly to wage war;

Men can do best, and women know it well

Preeminence in all and each is yours;
