There is an outdoor place that is very special to me. There have been a lot of feelings and emotions associated with it, everything from the romantic sunset, to the feel of the cool breeze from the lake. The getaway, which is located at the dunes, is a place that I love to go to get away from it all. The first time I went there was with my girlfriend, Lauren, about a year ago. It was a surprise for her on our one year anniversary. I took her out of the car and strolled up the cold sand. I grabbed her hand and I could feel the heat coming off her palm. We got to the top, where we could see the entire lake, sat down and laid out a blanket. As I’m lying there with her in my arms waiting for the sunset, I see the sun reflecting off the water and making the sand we’re sitting on sparkle. A couple of leaves from the surrounding trees looked so vivid that it was like looking into an oil painting. The few clouds in the sky were mostly white, but looked amazing with the sun’s rays in the background.

As we sit and wait for this magical moment to arrive, I hear the waves from the lake wash up on the shore. A few birds fly over head making noises of hunger as they pass. I can hear Lauren’s breath start to weaken as she gets relaxed on top of the soft blanket. The bugs in the background sound like an orchestra. I smell her perfume mixed in with the resounding smell of leaves falling from the trees. As we watch this magical moment I can taste her sweet cherry flavored lip gloss as we indulge into each other’s arms. As the bright yellow and orange mixed sphere finally settles behind the crystal azure lake, we both see the reflection in our eyes and wish this moment would last forever.

When I read the article by Keith Goetzman’s called “the late, great outdoors” the idea of retreating to an artificial environment was introduced. He brought up the point “I am opposed to taking a backhoe and a cement truck to the river; supposedly make it more ‘fun’. It strikes me as obscene (0). However, indoor activities such as artificial beaches, sunlight, and lakes would take all the magical and fun moments in life, such as the one I experienced with my girlfriend above, away.

The beach, one of the most fun places to go, if taken in to an artificial environment would be one of the most ignorant things I could think of. Artificial environments have caught on for various reasons Goetzman explains, “It’s more convenient, why would we drive 00 miles to participate”? (0). If someone couldn’t experience a real sunset on a beach, or lake, an artificial one wouldn’t be half bad. Having one made instead of the real thing is better than having nothing at all.

If the opportunity arose where I had to choose between an artificial sunset and the real thing, I would go with the real sunset. As Goetzman explains, a lot of teenagers would rather have an artificial environment. Goetzman writes “If I’m in the mountains, I’m out of cell-phone coverage, and I can’t do that” (10). The beach that I was on did cover my cell phone range, but I could see it as a problem if the beaches in other parts of the United States are more elevated. Other outdoor enthusiasts though, prefer to have the environment stay where it belongs, outside. “The environment is as important as the technical difficulties, if not more so” (Goetzman 10).

The outdoors is one of the most peaceful places to be on earth. The beauty of nature, the rush you get when you reach the top of a mountain for the view, or just the feeling when you look into a sunset with the person you love. If a sunset on a beach or lake couldn’t be experienced from where the person is located, an artificial one would compensate. However, you can’t make an artificial environment as detailed as the real thing.

Emily Grierson

“A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner is set in a small Southern town during the post Civil War era. The story revolves around Emily Grierson and the peculiar, tragic events of her life. Faulkner portrays the characters, particularly Miss Emily, as relics, incapable of living in the present.

Emily’s problems start after the death of her father. The day after his death, she answers the door “dressed as usual and with no trace of grief on her face” (551) and tells her visitors that her father is not dead. It takes three days for the town to persuade her that her father is, in fact, dead and retrieve the body for burial.

After her father’s death, a short time passes without her being seen, and when she emerges she meets Homer Barron, the man she believes is the love of her life. They are mismatched from the beginning. Miss Emily is from a prominent Southern family and Homer Barron is a Yankee and a day laborer. Homer tells the young men at the Elks’ Club that he is not “a marrying man” (55), but the townspeople believe that “she will persuade him yet” (55). In the

beginning, everyone thinks their relationship is acceptable until they see that it is getting serious. Then the townsfolk look down upon their actions, calling

them “a disgrace to the town and a bad example to the young people” (55). The town’s perception of Homer Barron as an unsuitable Yankee, unsuitable for

someone of Miss Emily’s position, parallels the old southern dislike of anyone from the North.

Emily’s desire for love and companionship drives her to murder Homer Barron. She can not bear the thought of living the rest of her life without him, and he refuses to marry her. She kills him and keeps his body in the house so they can be together forever. Before she kills him, she had “been to the jeweler’s and purchased a man’s toilet set, with the letters H.B. on each piece” (55) and a “complete outfit of men’s clothing, including a nightshirt” (55). The townspeople assume they are married.

Throughout the short story, a gradual change in Miss Emily’s character can been paralleled with the deterioration of her house. The Grierson house once stood “white, decorated with cupolas and spires…” (548). This architecture symbolizes the prestige, strength and respect the Grierson’s hold throughout the community. Before the death of her father, Ms. Emily and her family stand as monuments of high ethical standards in the community. As the story progresses, the house is described of smelling of “dust and disuse” (54) and Ms. Emily’s appearance seems to be heading in the same direction. Her voice becomes “dry and cold” and her body seems “bloated” and unkempt (54).

Miss Emily lives in the past. She represents the Old South and its resistance to becoming part of the modern world. Miss Emily’s one chance at

freedom was with her first love that she thought she would marry. This freedom was denied by her father who ran off the suitor. Having been denied her true love and her one chance to live her life and move into the modern world, she quits living and remains thereafter in the past. Homer represents the pre-modern south and Emily is unable to deal with this. It is only through death the Emily, a woman from a distinguished Southern family, is able to deal and be with Homer, a Yankee day laborer. Clearly, for Miss Emily, death conquers all.

Eleanor Roosevelt led a crusade for justice and decency. She battled for equality and power for woman. All subjects she spoke about back then are still relevant even today. For that reason alone made her a good communicator.

She was able to get herself heard by just talking with others. She was willing to talk, debate, and share her opinions with anyone who would listen. And she had quite a few opinions. Her principal message was that women should be equal to men in everyway. They should be able to have the right to vote also while in the work place be receiving the same amount of pay that a man is makes. She believed that women should not be discriminated against just because of there sex.

She used her column in the Woman’s Democratic News to voice her on opinion on several different topics. While her husband was calling for “Cutting local government (Pg. 7)” which would limit the money spent on education and public services that people needed. Within her column she countered that this was the time to utilize government services instead of cutting them. She wrote that they should take from the “proper sources” and from “the people who are endowed richly with this worlds goods or such profits (7)”. She wanted people to become more aware of the way the government was spending there tax dollars. She also gave several chapters in her book It’s up to the Woman on federal and local investments.

Another topic she felt strongly about was that public health began with education. She advocated for the construction of local clinics and hospitals. She also was in favor of sex education in schools. She believed both boys and girls should be taught it. Within her column she called it “family planning’’.

She used press conferences to get her message to the public. These conferences were guided and had specific rules “No gossip, No leaks, and No scoops.” She only covered topics that she thought would be newsworthy. Eleanor spoke on trade unionism and better working conditions for all. She also demanded the end of child labor. With a lot of work she and her colleagues were able to get a child labor amendment passed by congress.

COLLEGE ATHLETES GAMBLING

When you are watching your favorite college team play in a championship game and the team is winning, then all of sudden the other opponent comes back to win by some kind of miracle. Do you ever wander if that game was fixed? We’ll if your answer is yes, then your probably right. This is a major problem for the NCAA, to sports clean on the collegiate level. A problem that used to go unnoticed, but now it is major concern for universities and the NCAA program. Gambling by college student athletes has become one of the greatest concerns among coaches and athletic directors around the nation. You have college players risking their athletic career betting or shaving points on their team for money. Some players into gambling by accident, like for example, a friendly bet can turn into a gambling addiction. Some athletes get into gambling as a way to support themselves financial, since NCAA rules restrict college players from working. Although law enforcements have tried to fight gambling in college, it hasn’t stopped athletes from getting involved into gambling. Players that do get caught gambling lose a year of eligibility from playing on their team, and even lose all their eligibility (meaning that they may never again be able to participate in college sports). But college athletes will continue to gamble in school, unless the NCAA comes up with way to better help students financially. Over the years, ever since college football and men’s basketball have become big, big business. The NCAA at least can give these college athletes something, rather its money to go to the movies or even laundry money. Universities get paid a lot of money for being in tournaments, I think they can least share the wealth and reward these players.

Some experts say that internet is one of the problems why gambling in college is bad. With so many web sites focused on betting, it is so easy for an athletic player to join a website based on gambling. Players can join under an alias name place his bet on a game, without every getting caught. Web sites like Betonsports.com say “is setting odds and taking wages on the next developments on the war in Iraq”. Too often, in the world of sports, and increasingly in college athletics, Americans open the newspaper or turn on the television only to be met with stories of scandal star athletes involved in point shaving, college-age bookies, illegal Internet sports betting (Goodlatte). Internet gambling has rose over the past five years, to having 1,400 Web sites. But despite federal and state laws prohibiting sports gambling over the internet, operators continue to market their products in the United States. You see advertisement in magazines for gambling all the teasing kids to place bets on the internet. An NCAA study found that 5 percent of college athletes said they had wagered on games they were involved in and . percent said they had tried to change the outcome of a game they had bet on (Arnold). Gambling over the internet is growing at such a high rate, that the NCAA urged senators to pass a legislation aimed to shut down gambling websites. Steven, a college student from Pennsylvania, is a straight-A student in high school. Already has a gambling debt of $0,000 making college bets on internet (Nandagiri). The emergence of Internet gambling now enables students and athletic players to wager behind closed doors, anonymously, and with the guarantee of absolute privacy.

August Strindberg vesus Henrik Ibsen

When 1th century playwright Henrik Ibsen learned of the way women were being portrayed by his fellow playwright August Strindberg in his play “Miss Julie” in 1888, he became outraged.

The play portrayed the main character, Julie, as a secondary form of humanity that is inferior to men -- just as Strindberg viewed women himself. He believed it was a fact of science that women could never be equal to men no matter how hard they try to.

Ibsen and Strindberg had been previously competing over social issues, but “Miss Julie” pulled Ibsen’s last nerve, says Randolph Carter, professor of drama at the University of South Florida. In retaliation, Ibsen began constructing his own play with his own views about the role of women in society. He was determined to exploit what he thought were errors in Strindberg’s views and ideas, Carter says.

“Ibsen was not going to back down,” Carter says. “There was already bad blood between the two but Ibsen thought August Strindberg crossed over that line, and he was going to trip him up anyway he could.”

Ibsen’s vision finally became a reality in 180 when he completed “Hedda Gabler,” a play in which the main character Hedda Gabler Tesman believes she can become an equal to men and even dominate them. When Strindberg found out about the plot, he became furious because he felt Ibsen was promoting feminism.

“It became a heated seesaw battle,” says Leslie Johnson, director of The Province Theater in Mobile, Ala and drama critic. “One hated the other and angered the other on purpose and then he came back to do the same things he was angry about. It was outrageous; some people even see it as hilarious.”

Despite Ibsen and Strindberg’s disagreements, both of the works were similar in that they both had the same ending result. The circumstances, however, which led to the conclusion differed greatly. Both of the plays and characters in the play reflect the true views of the playwrights.

While the two playwrights do not have much in common besides making a significant impact on the development of modern day naturalism--the showing of things the way they really are in life--,the differences in opinion about a woman’s place in society would forever separate the two playwrights. Yet, those same works have joined them as well.

Throughout the years, many high school and college literature course instructors require students to read or view not one, but both plays alongside each other. Pearl Kennett, professor of drama and literature at Southwest Missouri State University, said she is able to skip over many works that are linked to each other while teaching her classes, but she cannot do it for “Miss Julie“ and “Hedda Gabler.”

“There are some things we can get by with,” Kennett said. “I can assure you that those two plays are never missed and they are always together. It’s just simply impossible to separate the two works.”

In Strindberg’s “Miss Julie,” the play is a battle between a man and woman’s proper place in society in which the man ultimately wins. Julie and her lover Jean consistently struggle for power. Julie is a person of high rank socially since her father is a Count, while her lover Jean is a lowly servant.

“Julie had that higher rank stigma on her,” Carter says. “Right away, Strindberg is placing her high and in dominance so she can fall flat on her face. Despite her family rights, (Strindberg) will make her fall, and Jean will rise. (Strindberg) is going to make sure man would become dominant even in the unlikeliest of situations.”

Sure enough, Julie’s power over Jean dwindles as the play progresses. Both Julie and Jean have dreams of reversing into each other’s role as Julie dreams of lowering herself on the social ladder and Jean dreams of rising up to obtain a high social status.

Before long, Jean gains complete dominance over Julie. Julie evens lowers herself so much that she says she will obey Jean “like a dog” would. Even when Julie realizes that she has shamed her family by declining socially and wants to kill herself because of it, she cannot do it on her own. She must ask Jean to command her to commit suicide, which she does.

She was so strong and then became so weak,” Johnson says. “It’s fascinating how Strindberg brought her from one extreme to the other. She takes her life loses all of her rightful power because of her gender. I can visualize Ibsen’s ears steaming with fury at this. It must have driven him nuts.”

In reprisal, Ibsen created the character Hedda, one who holds on to her beliefs that she can be equal to a man throughout the play. In the first scene, Hedda is very rude to her husband Tesman and his aunt, who have done nothing wrong.

“Right off the bat, Ibsen makes it known that Hedda would be in charge,” Kennett says. “She’s obviously the ruler of the house at that initial point, and she is going to fight to stay that way all the way through.”

Hedda consistently fights against the constraints that her society has placed on women. Hedda believes she should not be subject to men and continues to fight what her environment says. However, when Hedda finally realizes that society will not accept her as she wants, despite her determination, she becomes destructive. She hurts the others around her.

Ibsen creates Hedda as the daughter of a general who raised her as though she were a boy. Throughout the play, it is apparent that Ibsen portrays Hedda as not a typical housewife or mother, Johnson says. This becomes evident when Hedda ignores and denies her pregnancy. The simple thought that she would have to be a typical mother and lose independence disturbs her.

“She wants control and she wants things to be her way,” Johnson says. “Most scholars believe she only married Tesman because he would give her wealth with his possible professorship at a local university. Because Tesman was fairly laid-back, she had easy control over him.”

One man was not enough for Ibsen. He adds another character for Hedda to control --the great scholar Lövberg. As Lövberg’s former lover, Hedda has had control over him since then and has been able to share things with her that he could never tell anyone else. Seeing that the woman currently in love with Lövberg, Mrs. Elvsted, has created a manuscript with the great scholar, which Hedda calls their “child,” Hedda becomes jealous because she feels she is losing control over Lövberg.

“Her jealousy is wicked and cold,” Carter said. “She burns Lövberg’s manuscript instead of giving it back to him when she has that power. But she maintains power over Lövberg when he became depressed and was convinced by Hedda to kill himself. When she gives him the pistol, she shows how great her control is over the man.”

Her power came to an end, though. Judge Brack, the only person who knew that Hedda assisted in Lövberg’s suicide, now has the power to blackmail her, which he threatens to do. The realization that someone else has power over her is unbearable for Hedda. She then commits suicide -- the same result as Julie. In the process, she also takes the life of her baby.

“It’s interesting how he chose to end the play with the same results as his rival,” Kennett says. “But I think Ibsen’s main goal was to show that Hedda still had that control to the end when she took her own life without anyone telling her what to do. It was a choice she made, unlike Mrs. Julie who acted like a puppy she needed Jean to give her directions to do the same thing.”

Although there is no evidence, Kennett believes that Ibsen possibly created Lövberg as a scholar to mock Strindberg and his views. She even thinks Lövberg may be a true representation of how Ibsen would have liked to have seen Strindberg treated in real life.

“I could never imagine what August Strindberg would have thought or said if he had that same assumption I have,” Kennett says. “Strindberg under the control of a woman? In our wildest dreams!”

Analysis Paper 1

In Anne Bradstreet’s, “The Prologue”, Anne talks about the struggles she has as being a woman in a colony dominated by men and their all their good deeds.

The poem, in the first verse, starts off praising the conquests of men throughout the years. In such lines as

To sing of wars, of captains, and of kings,

Of cities founded, commonwealths begun,

For my mean pen are too superior things

Anne is humbled to the exploits that men have contributed to mankind. In the latter verses, she then continues on to talk about how women have been overlooked as only the kind to cook, sew, and work around the house. An example of this being in this quote

I am obnoxious to each carping tongue

Who says my hand a needle better fits,

A poet’s pen all scorn I should this wrong,

For such despite they cast on female wits

Anne ends the poem still adamantly comparing men to women. In the last verses of the poem, she talks about how men are very boisterous about their great deeds and record them in their own writings, but that women also know they can do just as well as men can. She also ends the poem with,

It is but vain to unjustly to wage war;

Men can do best, and women know it well

Preeminence in all and each is yours;

Yet grant some small acknowledgment of ours.

In the previous passage, Anne basically conveys that women should get some praise in what they have contributed. These exploits not being as epic as what men have done, but just as necessary for such epic events to occur.

In closing, Anne Bradstreet seemed to be a very critical poet in the early years of colonial America. Her poems about women’s struggles in the early colonies give us a bigger picture on how life was like for them in such times.

The Second Nun’s Tale, a conventional religious biography, tells the story of St. Cecilia. Chaucer uses symbolism and imagery to manifest Cecilia as a Saint of God.

St. Cecilia becomes the archetype of the savior in this tale. She saves Valerian and his brother and opens their eyes to Christ. Valerian and Tiburtius in time become symbols of Stephen, the first Christian martyr. Cecilia eventually follows the two brothers in martyrdom, after spreading her message under much persecution. The angel at the beginning of the tale that protects Cecilia represents the potential of God’s wrath. If Valerian would have touched her or had intercourse with her the wrath of God, the Angel, would have killed him, ”he will kill you at once.”(Chaucer 0) Pope Urban signifies the ancient Holy Man/ mystic. His location adds much to the tone the character brings forth, “this holy, aged Urban, lurking among the graves of the saints.”(Chaucer 04) The old man appearing while at Urban’s hiding place exemplifies a messenger of God. The messenger’s attire and the author’s word choice show him a holy doer of God’s will, “an old man dressed in clear white clothes appeared. Holding a book with golden letters in his hand.”(Chaucer 04) Another physical representation of God’s holiness, the flowers presented to Cecilia and Valerian, illustrates that only a few will take the step to get into the grace of God, but the benefits give more than an existence out side of his will. The symbols of this account add to the tone of holiness that surrounds Cecilia.

The imagery of the Nun’s second tale gives Cecilia a pure depiction. The references to Christ support the symbol of Cecilia as a savior archetype, “Sower of pure counsel, Shepherd of us all.”(Chaucer 04) The imagery of pureness present Cecilia as one without blemish, “Oh, Lord, keep my soul and my body spotless, lest they be doomed.”(Chaucer 0) The different color metaphors depict the goodness of the Saint. References to white and whiteness again signify purity and honor. “The greenness of conscience” that she posses give her a natural, earthy and good texture. The redness of the roses given to Cecilia and Valerian also adds a sense of vitality to their cause. The images of this story add depth to the plot and characters.

Cecilia and the other major characters receive all of their characterization through the author’s usage of tone and description. The symbols and imagery used by Chaucer bring forth Cecilia as a savior and a saint.

An analysis of chapter 16 in “Snow Falling On Cedars” by David Guterson.

This chapter focuses mainly on Ishmael Chambers and his past and begins by talking about his experiences of the war. The first paragraph describes how Ishmael became ill during training as a marine rifleman. When Guterson uses the phrase, “Other boys came and went, but he stayed,” this is symbolic of how he felt since he received Hatsue’s letter in the previous chapter, it shows how his life is on hold now, and he is watching others live their lives while he watches his pass him by.

“It was the kind of suffering, after all, he’d yearned for during the last five months, since receiving Hatuse’s letter. It was an easy, sleepy kind of languid fever, and so long as he did not try to move too much or exert himself unnecessarily he could live this way indefinitely.” This shows that he has felt broken since he read the letter. He feels that, although he knew in his heart that Hatsue did not love him, now she put it in such direct terms, that there is no hope for them now, and now he appreciates the opportunity to feel nothing, to keep out the pain that has been eating at him ever since she sent the letter to him.

The chapter then stops talking about Ishmael’s feeling for a while, and concentrates on the war, and the effect of it on the people involved. When the chapter describes the actions of Private Gerald Willis, when he had propped up a dead Japanese boy’s penis and thrown stones at it, and boasted after, Guterson is trying to show the extent that the war had corrupted these people and caused them to become almost animal-like. Guterson repeatedly refers to the people as “boys,” emphasising the fact that they are all young, barely more than children.

Ishmael is said to be “numb to it all, uninterested in drinking and pool and other people, and the more drunk he got the more lucid his mind was and the colder he felt toward everyone.” This shows the extent to which his depression has progressed, he cannot see the point of anything anymore, he does not feel anything for anyone, and furthermore, does not feel anything for himself. “He did not understand the laughter of his companions or their ease or anything else about them.” This shows how detached he is from the rest of the world and his peers. It shows how he is trapped in his own head, and is unable to understand anything about anyone else.

The chapter goes on to tell us how Ishmael attempted to write Hatsue a letter, then ripped it up, along with the one he wrote to his parents. This is another example of how detached he is to everyone else, he has no idea what to say in his letters and therefore decides not to bother with them, despite how much his parents would appreciate it, it is Hatsue that he would like to write to, because he is angry at her, and because of this pent up anger he feels, he cannot write to his parents either.

The chapter then talks about what is going on with the war. It says how one of Ishmael’s peers was writing a letter home and he then tells Ishmael that he “better write one” himself, because it will be his last chance. Ishmael replies that there is no one that he would like to write to. This shows that Ishmael feels totally alone, disorientated. However, the other man convinces him to write one so he goes to get his pad of paper and “composed a letter to Hatsue.” It tells us that Ishmael was watching the other men writing intently, so perhaps only not to stand out, he writes to Hatsue. He tells her that he has to been sent to “kill people that looked like her” and that he “hates” her. He said that he hates Hatsue “with everything in his heart” and “it felt good to write in just that way.” This is a kind of release for Ishmael, this is the only way he can vent out the anger he feels inside. He wrote “I hate you, Hatsue, I hate you always.” However, the fact that he cannot send it and throws it into the sea, shows that he does not hate her, he just feels incredibly angry and betrayed.

Ishmael asks Ernest Testaverde if he would like a drink “before we die.” He says this in a light-hearted manner, almost as is he does not care that this could happen. He feels that he has lost everything already. The chapter basically then describes the men preparing to go off to fight. Once they go off to war, it describes their journey. One man says, “Shit, a goddamn shell. I don’t believe this shit” and all Ishmael replies is, “Me neither” again showing that he is not particularly bothered by dying, showing more so, the extent of his depression. “I thought they blew the shit out of this place… I thought they dusted all the big guns off before we had to go in. Jesus fucking Christ.” All this swearing shows that the other men are panicking about the prospect of dying, but when Ishmael talks about it, there is no panic in his voice, he talks in a totally deadpan tone, showing he does not care. Once he realises that most of the men are dead, Ishmael says “Fucking Japs.” He blames all off this on the Japanese, and we can tell my the way he spits out the words how much he hates the Japanese, but this is not just due to the killings, it is because of Hatuse. For him, everything is the fault of the Japanese and therefore the fault of Hatsue. This is not rational, but he is not in a rational state of mind.

We are told of how Ishmael had to have his arm removed and how he was not fully anaesthetised, how a handsaw was used to do the job, how it was done unevenly so that it would not heal as quickly or as neatly as it would otherwise have done. This shows how terrible the conditions at war were. It was simply a case of getting the job over and done with as quickly as possible. There was no time to make it neat, or for pain relief, you simply got on with it. We are told that Ishmael “would still dream of that, the way his own fingers curled against the wall, how white and distant his arm looked… a piece of trash on the floor.” This shows how he is still haunted by his experiences of the war, and this is ten years on, and we see no signs of him getting over it soon. The very last sentence in the chapter was, “...that fucking goddamn Jap bitch was all he could think of to say.” He started off by saying “the Japs are… The fucking Japs…” but he could not finish the sentence, he could only say “That fucking goddamn Jap bitch” and this shows that deep down he does not hate all Japanese, but only Hatsue. She has hurt him in ways she will never understand. He hates her for what she has done to him.

By Nathaniel Hawthorne

Science and the research involved in it has been the pulse of our society for decades. With each new discovery, each new advancement in technology, we are able to help people live healthier, happier lives. However, there is a line that few have crossed in the field of science that raises heated debates that span the globe. From the idea of stem cell research to the suggestion of cloning, many believe that science, if taken too far, or winding up in the wrong hands has the potential to create disaster. In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s’ The Birthmark, the author tells a story of a newly wed young scientist who ultimately kills his own wife by pursuing cosmetic perfection while trying to remove a birthmark from her face, and simultaneously relays a message to us all There can be no perfection in nature through science.

It is evident in the beginning that Hawthorne doesn’t wish to speak out against the idea of science in general, but rather the quest for perfection through science. Hawthorne’s character Aylmer, feels that his experiment is justified because of his supposed love for his wife, but more realistically his motive probably has more to do with his own feelings of shame for having a wife with a blemish on her face. … you came so nearly perfect from the hand of Nature that this slightest possible defect, which we hesitate whether to term a defect or a beauty, shocks me, as being the visible mark of earthly imperfection (60). Here it seems as if Aylmer is attempting to convince his wife that his suggestion for removing the mark is something that he wants to do out of love and with intentions of helping her. Also, the use of the phrase “earthly imperfection” is very significant, hinting at the idea that by removing such an imperfection, Aylmer is playing a god like role.

Hawthorne’s theme that there can be no perfection in the nature is apparent upon Aylmer’s failure to correct his wife’s imperfection and at the same time keep her alive. Georgina bears a birthmark on her face in order to keep nature in balance, and any attempt to remove it can, and does result in disaster, which leads us to the conclusion that nature’s interwoven plan is not meant to be tampered with.

Hawthorne conveys the idea that it is easy to develop a false trust in the power of science. Aylmer believed he was proficient enough, boarding on being obsessively reckless, to perform this procedure, saying, doubt not my power…” “I feel myself fully competent to render this dear cheek as faultless as its fellow; and the, most beloved, what will be my triumph when I shall have corrected what Nature left imperfect in her fairest work! (6) However, it is clear in the end that science can never solve all problems, nor can mankind develop such a science, and if that were so, there would be no need for nature.

In my opinion, the question of whether or not Aylmer’s actions were justifiable even if the experiment had succeeded, is not the predominate concern in this particular story. More notably, Hawthorne wants us to be aware of why it is wrong to attempt to alter nature with science. With each innovation made in the field of science and technology, life presumably changes for the better. However, Hawthorne is trying to make it clear to us through his story that we should not try to alter nature to make it perfect, more specifically, altering the human body to achieve an ideal human form.

Moreover, the closer one gets to perfection the more obsessed one can become with that idea. Take Hawthorne’s character Aylmer for example. He becomes so obsessed with the idea of making his wife even more beautiful, that he completely sets aside all concern for her own wants and safety in hopes of completing what he has set out to do. Obsession for perfection becomes so overwhelming that is causes us, as well as Aylmer to lose sight of the fact those harmless blemishes, scars, or slight defects are just that, and quite possibly help contribute to who we are as individuals. In their absence, people would be robbed of what gives them individual characteristics, and sets them apart from everyone else.

the coffee culture in America

People Trying to Make a Living

Throughout the past four weeks, we have been examining the labor conditions involved in harvesting coffee. Having never studied this subject, I was shocked by what these laborers endure. Since its discovery, coffee has had a huge impact on cultures throughout the world. Many countries, especially Brazil, immediately adopted coffee as an important crop once it was introduced to them. Although this crop brought prosperity to many of these nations, it also brought massive amounts of slaves in order to harvest it all. Eventually, slavery was abolished, and a new class of people emerged who worked the fields and lived in extreme poverty. These laborers still live in these same conditions today. This extreme poverty is a result of the fact that many migrant workers come to the country because where they came from conditions were much worse. Compared to the United States, these migrant workers have an awful life. This drastic difference shows how much more diverse and advanced the United States’ economy is, and how Brazil must change its economic and immigration policies.

In order to understand this difference in the situations of migrant workers, we must first focus on what these economies are based. Let us look at a large coffee producing, South American country. According to the documentary, Coffee a Sackful of Power, Brazil developed its economy based on coffee. In the early 1600’s, Brazil monopolized on the coffee product by using slave labor to harvest the massive amounts of crops. The result of this focus on coffee was that the entire economy was based nearly completely on one product. Once slavery was abolished, Brazil suddenly found itself with millions of unemployed ex slaves. Brazil lost massive amounts of revenue because now they had to pay laborers to harvest the coffee crop. In order to solve this problem, Brazil began importing cheap foreign labor in order to drive the wages down. This act created a problem because many native Brazilians were and still are forced to work for much lower wages than if there were no immigrants. Because these laborers work form day to day, they cannot obtain any skills; therefore they are stricken to this life of poverty (Valenti). If all of the workers have only this one skill there is no specialization; therefore, the owners can control the prices for a job since laborers have no other options for jobs. Not only is there only one main job for laborers, but also there are constantly migrant workers coming to the country, making it harder for people to get jobs. Also, the increase in population drives the wages down because demand for jobs increases, allowing the owners to set wages at a lower price. This unique situation has forced the migrant workers into horrible living conditions where most of them are forced to live on the plantations with the plantation owners (Dicum and Luttinger 44). After examining this economy we shall see how it drastically differs from that of the United States.

The United States is rather unique compared to the other countries in the world. We are the land of opportunity where anyone can make it. Our economy is probably the most diverse in the world. When it was first founded, America was mainly a place used for its raw materials. The economy was based around various crops which were harvested, refined and shipped to large, wealthy countries. Over many years, the United States became a nation that used raw materials in order to create its own refine products. Today, the U.S. has become so diverse in its economy it can almost control prices on foreign goods. Because there is so much diversity in the economy, there are many job opportunities for migrant workers. Business is growing at such a high rate, these migrant workers from the U.S. are actually in demand; therefore, these migrant workers live in much better conditions than those from Brazil. Due to the nature and diversity of the U.S. economy it differs largely from that of Brazil.

Although we know now that there is a massive difference in the general economies of these two countries today, if we look back at when America had just been discovered, there are many similarities in the two economies. Both of these countries relied on cash crops and cheap labor. In order to make conditions better for migrant workers, Brazil must put better restrictions on immigration and begin to focus on helping its own citizens, much like the U.S. This way, more jobs will open up to the natives and wages will slowly rise. Today, Brazil continues to export the raw material, coffee, to countries like the U.S. According to the documentary Coffee A Sackful of Power, the U.S. is related to Brazil due to the fact that the coffee prices are actually regulated by our market (Avanti). This fact says a whole lot about the general economies of both of our nations because it is actually our country that controls how much these migrant workers make. If were not so concentrated on coffee as a main source for the economy, then we would not be able to control the prices of coffee. If Brazil could control their own prices then the migrant workers would not have to live in such poor conditions.

If they ever want to become a truly successful country, Brazil must further diversify its economy and impose stricter immigration laws. As of right now, countries like the U.S. control the prices of the coffee product, yet they do not grow it. We think that people making five dollars an hour in the United States are living in poverty, but there are people in Brazil who make literally just enough to live from day to day. If Brazil does not do something for its citizens, it will only hurt the country in the long run because their cheap labor drives the price so low it allows the U.S. to basically control their prices. Finally, if laborers continue to live in these conditions, they will lose all faith in the government and there are many problems that could result form there such as a civil war.

Promotion

In its long history of advertisements, Pepsi has come from once being, “The Original Pure Food Drink”, to the ideal product for “Generation Next”. It has come a long was ever since it was created nearly one hundred years ago. It’s success in advertisement and promotions have made a multi billion dollar corporation out of a company that once filed for bankruptcy in the early 10s. The company first went international starting with Mexico in 107. It also expanded its markets in other parts of the world including South America, the Middle East, eastern Asia, the former USSR and Africa. During the 140s, Pepsi’s “Nickel, Nickel” song became a worldwide hit and it lead to a major increase in sales. It persuaded the general public to purchase the drink because they would get an awful lot for their money. The tune was also translated into 55 languages worldwide. Also, the company decided to change their signature colors to red white and blue (which are still used today) in support of the war effort in the early 140s. The military 1 ounce cans were commercially sold in 165 and canteen shaped litre bottles were also as environmentally friendly products. A group that was always targeted from Pepsi since the beginning has always been African Americans. During World War , Pepsi was the only drink available to African American soldiers. The company also sponsored the Martin Luther King Jr. institute and it continues to do so today. The Pepsi challenge, which was first used in 175 then again in 000, created a unique marketing opportunity to really test consumers. It consisted in giving the consumer a blind test between a sample of Pepsi, and another one of Coke, which has always Pepsi’s main competitor in the Cola Wars. In the ads, the people who faced the Pepsi challenge always ended up choosing the taste of Pepsi over Coke. Due to this marketing campaign, Pepsi saw an incredible boost in its total sales. Another promotional tool that Pepsi relies on is consumer endorsement. The use of celebrities in Pepsi advertisements began with Michael Jackson in 184. His commercial with Pepsi was the eagerly awaited advertisement of all time. The message it was sending the American public consisted of Pepsi being the “street” drink aimed at targeting minorities and young “hip” teenagers who wanted to be cool and feel good about themselves. The slogan back then was, “Be Young, Have fun, Drink Pepsi”. Celebrities who followed in Jackson’s footsteps include Elton John, MC Hammer, The Rolling Stones, Tina Turner, Ray Charles, etc. During the 10s, Pepsi entered the world of cross-promotion. It signed contracts with Yahoo.com, Star Wars, Taco Bell and KFC. At one point, the notion of Pepsi points was introduced in the North American market. It encouraged consumers to purchase enough Pepsi products to accumulate points in order to collect prizes. The points were found under the cap of each Pepsi bottle. The more points a consumer collected the better prize he was able to win. An important moment for Pepsi’s advertising history was when it signed Britney Spears in the late 10s. Her image blended in perfectly with the Generation Next campaign and the reintroduction of the 161 campaign, “for those who think young”. Youth is a vital market for Pepsi and signing up a pop-star that is so involved in the youth culture lead to the ultimate product identification. Britney Spears is the most recognizable celebrity teens between ages of 1 and 1. This is the same age group that influences 10 billion dollars in family spending in addition to their personal expenditure of billion dollars. Pepsi didn’t decide to limit their target audiences to just children and teens, their “Now and Then” ad moves beyond targeting the young because it shows Britney in various decades. All of these decades, from the 150s and on, remind adults of their childhood thus triggering an emotional response from them. Therefore, children and adults of all ages become target audiences for the product. By creating a diversified target market and knowing exactly how to trigger various segments, Pepsi has earned much success and expansion throughout the world with its intelligent advertising campaigns.

Abstract

The purpose of interviewing Mrs. O’Neal was to enhance the interviewer’s skills and to learn about the management function of her organization. Mrs. O’Neal gave information about her personal life and how she had improved her career and became a manager without a college degree.

Managing the Home and family

Mrs. O’Neal has been married for years and has a 1 year-old son who is studying computer science at the Georgia Institute of Technology. She goes to school full time at Mercer, taking three courses each session, and in addition works about 50 hours a week. Her husband, who is 5 and retired last year after a thirty-year career at Bell South, manages the house to buy groceries, do the laundry and physically does the housework with the help of a housekeeper who cleans once a week. He even sets the alarm for 50 A.M., wakes her, and prepares the shower.

Employment History and Advancement to become a Manager

Mrs. O’Neal revealed that she has had a career as an accountant for twenty years and has been the Controller of the Southeast Specialty Millwork Company for the last five years. She began her career by applying for a computer job from a newspaper advertisement. She had no experience in computers, so the interviewer said she was not qualified for the job, but that there was an opening in Accounts Receivable. She started with no experience and after eighteen months was asked to head a new Purchasing Department. The responsibilities of managers of Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable were then added. After ten years, the CEO of Fisher Business Systems sold the company. He then purchased Southeast Specialty Mill Works and asked Mrs. O’Neal to be the Controller. She had had a good relationship with him, always did a good job for him, and was able to multi-task and does so many other things.

Leadership and Management.

In conversation with Mrs. O’Neal, she was asked in which area she was stronger, leadership or management. She said, “It has to be a combination of the two, but I am stronger doing the tasks. I think that all the people can manage their own tasks. But if someone is away or something doesn’t get done, I can go into the department and do the job, and everyone knows that. They respect me, because I am no just sitting up there drinking coffee and saying, ‘do this, do that’. Similarly I trust the people that I have trained to do something in my absence. I relate to people that do their own work, not just tell other people to do it. I think that you get respect from your employers as a manager who doesn’t just manage, but does work as well.” Some people had to be fired. But the employees were talked to and accommodated in some ways, e.g. changing their workday hours. She believes it is fair to warn them and give them a second chance. If they still keep doing what is wrong, they don’t care. If they do not pay attention to the warning, Mrs. O’Neal said she, “had no qualms about firing them. I don’t care if you are hurt. I am sorry you have children to have to feed, but you were warned.”

Mrs. O’Neal does not have an accounting degree, but instead she has 15 years of experience in accounting and can do just about anything an accountant can do or even a CPA. When she worked with auditors, she would learn from them, try to understand why they did those things and asked questions. And she has always taken seminars on such things as, “How to Use Excel”.

Hard Core

Mrs. O’Neal said that she “is perceived as a bit ‘hard core’ by her co-workers”. She has a high work ethic, appreciates the opportunities she was given, and takes her responsibilities seriously. She said, “I am at work on time, I work until the job is done, and if assigned a task, it is completed because I am being paid to do that.”

Once a month she pays from her wallet her employee’s lunch, and pays for snacks and drinks to keep on hand for employees. When she gives raises she will take the employee to lunch and present a review. Then she takes them to lunch again for their approval.

Dealing with People and Problems

In the company there are 15 employees, six in accounting and the rest in administration. The receptionist, secretary to the President, the clerical person who works out in the plant, all of them report to Mrs. O’Neal who also manages the Accounts Receivable and the Accounts Payable Departments on a daily basis. She has her hands on everything in the company. But she expects that everyone has skills to do their jobs, and therefore does not watch over their shoulders. She expects people to come to her if there are problems, and work them out together. She says, “I am going to make sure that my job is done correctly and on time and I don’t care who I have to walk over to do that.” She has peers on her level, like the V. P. of Marketing and V. P of Sales, and may argue with them when her department does things correctly.

Ready for Change

Mrs. O’Neal has the drive to do more, which is the reason she enrolled in Mercer University to get a degree. Her boss, Mr. Fisher, is 5 years old and doesn’t want to work past the age of 6. He will sell the company soon and not buy another company. She would have to work for another company without him and may have to work in accounts receivable. No one will ever give her the opportunity to work at the level she works at now. She needs the degree from Mercer to get a job in

another company.

Change in the Corporate World

When asked how companies might change for the better, Mrs. O’Neal indicated that they might consider France as a model with their 6 hour workweek.

Now she never brings work home, but she does work about 5 hours a week. She likes the four weeks vacation time per year, which Europe has. She negotiated a four week vacation time, one week each quarter, when she became the Controller. The vacation time is as important to me as the salary.

The Future.

Mrs. O’Neal wants to get out of the corporate world and teach accounting, High School Level. That it is why she is going to Mercer and taking some education courses. She says, “Numbers are sometimes boring and I think I would be able to teach students, young people to appreciate numbers more.”

The article by Sharifi and Zhang is outlining a developed methodology for achieving agility in manufacturing organization and describing its implementation and validation in two case study companies. In developing the methodology, the authors used two empirical studies the concept of agility (Dove, 16; Kidd, 15), and the conceptual model of agility (Zhang and Sharifi, 000) as their main references.

Basically there are three major stages composed in the methodology the determination of a company’s agility needs and it current agility level, the determination of agility capabilities required in order for the company to become agile, and the identification of agility providers or business practices and tools which could lead to the recognized capabilities for the company. In order to give a better picture of the methodology, the authors created a graphical form of the methodology in figure of the article.

In the first stage of the methodology, an assessment model is developed to study the conditions in which a company struggles for success and to provide a mindset for the company to move toward agility. This includes two practical tools, referred to as tool one and tool two. Tool one is used to determine the degree of turbulence with a range between 1 and 10. If the score is closer to 10, it means that the more turbulent is the company’s business environment, the more agile the company needs to be. Based on this result the second tool is designed to determine the level of company’s agility. There are two possible outcomes that can be expected from this tool Gap analysis in which a speculative interpretation can be made to specify the level of agility needed, and direct result which indicates the company’s weak points as well as how to respond to them in a proper manner.

The second stage, which is the determination of agility capabilities, is carried out with the assistance of a network model with which external and internal changes/pressures effecting manufacturing organizations are classified and represented as inputs. The agility capabilities required to challenge and overcome the changes/pressures are represented as the outputs. In addition to that, an industrial questionnaire and a series of case studies are used to establish the network connection

Finally, in the last stage, the authors identify a list of business practices, methods, tools, and techniques as the agility providers. The importance of these agility providers to various capabilities is represented by a network relationship. The results from the network model described in the second stage are used as inputs to produce a set of outputs representing the importance of individual agility providers to a company.

In implementing this methodology, the authors selected two UK manufacturing companies that had responded to the previous phases of the assessment work. The first company is a leading manufacturer of domestic cookers, which appears to be the only manufacturer that is profitable in this business. The second company is a manufacturer of high-technology electronics components and devices established to supply its mother’s company. This article review will only discuss about company one because the procedures used for both companies are pretty similar.

In the implementation, both of these companies went through the three major stages of the methodology explained before the assessment model, determination of agility capabilities, and determination of agility providers. For simplification, the last two stages are referred to as “the practical tool”. For company one, the result of the assessment model reveal three major points

• Company one needs a moderate level of agility, though it is not an urgent agenda.

• The areas in table I must be taken into consideration as potentially threatening factors when defining and designing the company’s strategy.

• The company’s perception of its level of agility is higher than the perceived level and than the average score of tool number two of the assessment model.

The next stage, referred to as “the practical tool” is applied in three steps

1. Determining the drivers of the agility. Table III lists the types of agility drivers.

. Determining the required capabilities. Table IV lists 0 prioritized capabilities.

. Determining the practices and actions.

Based on the practical tool this company has ability level of 6.5 and less, therefore it needs the following important capabilities sensing, perceiving and anticipating changes, immediate reaction to changes, strategic vision, co-operation (internal and external), products/services quality, cost effectiveness, and people flexibility. The practical tool also provides guidance for the company to choose the appropriate practices. Sets of practices that can assist company one to achieve the proposed capabilities are listed in table V. Table VI lists some of the practices that company one has adapted in responding to the change factors. These actions could have provided other capabilities which can be extended with further actions from the proposed practices.

CRITIQUE

Sharifi and Zhang have done an excellent work in developing a methodology for achieving agility in manufacturing and presenting details in its implementation and validation in the two case studies companies. They have also performed an extensive research and review of literature relevant to the subject to be used as a basis for the formation of the methodology to help manufacturing companies make strategic decisions in the pursuit of agile manufacturing.

Sharifi and Zhang have also made a great effort in collecting the data and information used for the application of the methodology in the two companies. These collection of data was obtained during the previous phases of the research by determining various aspects of the companies like the level of agility needed, the abilities of the companies in response to unpredictable changes, the capability required by the company to respond to changes in appropriate manner. In addition, data and information were acquired by examining the business environment, speculating the available strategic alternatives, and identifying the practices that could support the company’s approach toward agility.

Despite of its well-established content, this study is subject to improvements due to some limitations. In some practical areas, the proposed methodology still needs a more advanced research, particularly in defining the relationship between agility capabilities and agility practices. A more extensive study in identifying the exact domain of capabilities, the corresponding practices, and the appropriate ways of implementing and assessing the capabilities would provide a more accurate guideline for organizations in pursuit of agile manufacturing.

Another area for improvement can be found in the number and location of participating companies for this study. The present paper has only analyzed two manufacturing companies in UK, thus the application of the findings might not be appropriate for other manufacturing companies in other countries. Future study should definitely increase the number of participating companies from different regions of the world where influencing factors such as business environment, business practices, and the strategic alternatives available for the company to pursue might be different.

By and large, the study on agile manufacturing in practice by Sharifi and Zhang is fairly comprehensive and well developed in terms of its content and method used. The development and application of the proposed methodology for achieving agility in manufacturing is also well presented in such detail and appropriate way. Nonetheless, the proposed methodology still needs a more advanced research, particularly in defining the relationship between agility capabilities and agility practices. Although the proposed methodology is to be fully developed and validated, it still constitutes an essential effort in this regard and assists to bridge the gap between theory and practice in the agile manufacturing.

ýÜüSynopsis

Kafka’s short “A Hunger Artist” tells the story of a once well known professional hunger artist. During the time before “the interest in professional fasting [had] markedly diminished,” the hunger artist was a great source of excitement for people. Kafka describes the way people once used to gather around the hunger artist’s cage and watch him as “he sat there pallid in black tights, with his ribs sticking out so prominently, not even on a seat but down among straw on the ground, sometimes giving a courteous nod, answering questions with a constrained smile, or perhaps stretching an arm through the bars so that one might feel how thin it was, and then again withdrawing deep within himself, paying no attention to anyone or anything, not even to the all-important striking of the clock that was the only piece of furniture in his cage, but merely staring into vacancy with half-shut eyes[.]” This description of the artist gives one the impression of a sort of ascetic on-show for people. Kafka also tells us about people’s true feelings about the performing ascetic. Though the children observed him in awe, the adults saw him “as a joke that happened to be in fashion.” People in general looked at the artist’s way with skepticism and disbelief. Some of them, the special “night-time watchers” (butchers who did not understand the artist’s fast), believed that the faster secretly ate “Nothing annoyed the artist more than such watchers; sometimes he mastered his feebleness sufficiently to sung during their watch for as long as he could keep going, to show them how unjust their suspicions were. But that was of little youth; they only wondered at his cleverness in being able to fill his mouth even while singing.”

This disbelief however, did not bother the artist as he eventually got used to it as a fact of his life. Since no one could watch the artist continuously, his was the only true satisfaction gained after the fasting period was over. It was a sense of personal dissatisfaction that really bothered the artist. Kafka hints that maybe fasting was not the only cause for his thinness. “The longest period of fasting was fixed by his impresario at forty days,” he states. The artist longed to go on further as he found fasting very easy and thus when the time came for him to leave his cage and eat, he was reluctant. The reason for the forty-day limit was that “[e]xperience had proved that forty days the interest of the public could be stimulated by a steadily increasing pressure of advertisement, but after that the town began to lose interest[.]”

After living thus for some years, fasting in regular intervals and being applauded by the world, the artist finds himself “deserted” as the “amusement-seekers” found more attractive entertainment elsewhere. Faced with this reality, the ascetic is forced to leave the impresario and hire himself to a circus. In the circus, his cage is placed, by his own decision, “outside, near the animal cages.” The artist naively believes that there is still interest in his fasting, but soon finds out that people are more attracted by the menagerie at the end of the “narrow gangway” on one side of which his cage is placed. After a while, nobody wishes to stop at his cage as the circus-goers are all on their way to the menagerie. They forget how long the artist has been fasting, how many records he has been breaking, until finally the circus attendant prompted by a visitor, remembers him. The artist reveals why he has been fasting for so long. “I couldn’t find the food I liked,” he says, before being buried. The circus replaces his cage with that of a young panther, which, in its eating and livelihood, holds visitors attention forever.

Thematic Analysis and Interpretation

The Hunger Artist is a story about asceticism that has lost its meaning. Modernity, Kafka tells us, is not entertained by avoidance of life--the hunger artists mystic asceticism--but by life itself--the panther. It is a highly symbolic story in its use of the comparison between the hunger artist and the panther. This contrast is the most important element in the story. The asceticism of the artist is mystic and religious; it is empty and propelled by a search for something better. But it is false, precisely because there is nothing better than life. Thus Kafka stresses the value of livelihood. The public lack of interest in the hunger artist is representative of the modern abandonment of spiritualism.

On Tarantino I find Quentins work very interesting, because he does dabble so well in the nihilistic world, but yet, theres a real streak of humanity in his work. Its not about the nihilism, its about people in a sense operating as honorably as they can in a nihilistic world. -- Frank Darabont, Creative Screenwriting

On Stephen King (jokingly) We have a joke now - because the first two films I directed were period prison movies - that my directing career will stall unless he writes another period prison story Frank Darabont, Creative Screenwriting

Amazon.com Essentials When this popular prison drama was released in 14, some critics complained that the movie was too long (14 minutes) to sustain its story. Those complaints miss the point, because the passage of time is crucial to this story about patience, the squeaky wheels of justice, and the growth of a life-long friendship. Only when the film reaches its final, emotionally satisfying scene do you fully understand why writer-director Frank Darabont (adapting a novella by Stephen King) allows the story to unfold at its necessary pace, and the effect is dramatically rewarding. Tim Robbins plays a banker named Andy whos sent to Shawshank Prison on a murder charge, but as he gets to know a life-term prisoner named Red (Morgan Freeman), we realize theres reason to believe the bankers crime was justifiable. We also realize that Andys calm, quiet exterior hides a great reserve of patience and fortitude, and Red comes to admire this mild-mannered man who first struck him as weak and unfit for prison life. So it is that The Shawshank Redemption builds considerable impact as a prison drama that defies the conventions of the genre (violence, brutality, riots) to illustrate its theme of faith, friendship, and survival. Nominated for seven Academy Awards including Best Picture, Actor, and Screenplay, its a remarkable film that signaled the arrival of a promising new filmmaker--a film that many movie lovers count among their all-time favorites. --Jeff Shannon

“Blackberrying” described Plath’s life for once as being happy, she was happy in her new home where she could go blackberrying. The poem decribes blackberries in three ways. First the berries are described during the harvest and the great sensations you get while picking them. The second to define what happens when the berries get over developed and they end up falling off the bushes by themselves. The third part of the poem tells about how the mood can be switched from picking good berries to seeing the berries too ripe and falling off the bushes. The blackberries are fun to pick and very juicy. The consist of red and blue juices which, get all over your fingers when you pick them. The blackberries fill with flies when they are not picked right away, and the flies reun all the berries and there is nothing to pick. The only other thing that can make a person happy after the blackberries are gone is the sea, but the sea doesn’t come over often between the hills which, leave the place empty.

I think that Plath didn’t have a great life or rather felt her life was bad even when it wasn’t. The only thing that kept her motivated was the fact that where is lived she was able to go pick blackberries. The blackberries made he happy because she felt like she was helping the by picking them when they needed to be picked. She only got sad when she let them go to long and they became to ripe and bad. I think this is a good poem and really reflects how her life sometimes was. She always had ups and downs in her life and one of her high point in life was when she had the chance to pick blackberries.

I started the theme Art and Architecture by producing a series of design sheets in a wide range of media across a series of subjects. These include ceramics, d, fine art and textiles. In each subject I started different. For example, in ceramics I started looking at architecture and recreating it. Whilst in textiles I was producing several experiments with different materials.

Within a couple of weeks into term I went to Venice an Barcelona for 5 days where I collected primary research. I also produced observational drawings of what I saw and examples artists work, such as Arman, Rossi, Bennoton, Pomoro and Matise. I also visited galleries. These include Gallerie Dell Academia and The International Galleria of Modern art.

On my return I worked into the initial sketches from Venice and Barcelona using a. variety of media including sowing, perspex, clay, watercolour, etching and paints. I liked the etching best as this was a new media and process to me and I was looking forward to work with it. I also achieved a series of good quality prints which I will mount. I also did the same into my design sheets

Once I got my design sheets going I started developing test pieces and maquettes using my influence of Venice and Barcelona my drawings/paintings and artists. I experimented with different mark making techniques using ink, mono printing and paints. I also had a go on the sowing machine trying to recreate a photograph of Venice I took. I found this quite hard at first but with time and practise I improved and felt more confident using the sowing machine. I glazed my test pieces which I made in ceramics as well using a variety of different glazes because I wanted to see what different glazes to with different oxides.

I have learnt a lot about different techniques and process throughout this term. They include etching, using a sowing machine and developed mono printing. If I had to do this unit again I would liked to develop more by using more glazes and oxides as it would give me more of an variety of different effects you can achieve. I would have liked more time to develop my d model as I found it hard to join the rods together and took me over a week to come up with a solution. I am now ready to take my ideas further to develop a final outcome.
