I now have a new found respect for all successful and struggling musicians. I sat down to play the piano piece and figured it would be a piece of cake; little did I know I was in store for a reality check. I started to play the piece and found it extremely difficult to keep my right hand playing on the keyboard; I would forget to keep playing or I would stumble over keys creating an uneven beat. I also found it hard to make the piece sound somewhat appealing to my ears. I knew that it was just an exercise, but I wanted my piece to sound intriguing and praise worthy (obviously this is not always possible when playing something like this piece). I noticed that as a listener, it was much easier to just tune in and out of the piece being played, however as a musician I had to constantly focus on the piece I was playing. As a listener I could relax and take in the music by ear, but as a musician I could not relax, I had to use my energy and mind to make sure I was executing the instructions correctly. I believe I was putting more effort into playing the piece then actually listening to the piece being performed.


In order to make my performances different from each other, I tried to change the rhythm in which I played the pieces. The first piece was the test piece (I just tried to play it and figure out what I was doing). In the second piece I tried to make it more pleasing to the ears by playing steadier and peacefully with my fingers. I found this to be extremely difficult and unsuccessful. I tried to play my third piece extremely fast. I thought it would be more fun and interesting to my ears; it turned out to be more difficult and non-appealing. The differences were somewhat easy to create; however, they turned out to have little appeal to me.


I believe that I could not play this piece for pleasure. I would want to have a more mellow melody and harmonious sound come from my playing; I did not get either of those aspects when playing this piece. I could possibly play the piece when I was engulfed with boredom, but I would not choose to play it very often.
