They have also performed an extensive research and review of literature relevant to the subject to be used as a basis for the formation of the methodology to help manufacturing companies make strategic decisions in the pursuit of agile manufacturing.
Sharifi and Zhang have also made a great effort in collecting the data and information used for the application of the methodology in the two companies. These collection of data was obtained during the previous phases of the research by determining various aspects of the companies like the level of agility needed, the abilities of the companies in response to unpredictable changes, the capability required by the company to respond to changes in appropriate manner. In addition, data and information were acquired by examining the business environment, speculating the available strategic alternatives, and identifying the practices that could support the company’s approach toward agility.
Despite of its well-established content, this study is subject to improvements due to some limitations. In some practical areas, the proposed methodology still needs a more advanced research, particularly in defining the relationship between agility capabilities and agility practices. A more extensive study in identifying the exact domain of capabilities, the corresponding practices, and the appropriate ways of implementing and assessing the capabilities would provide a more accurate guideline for organizations in pursuit of agile manufacturing.
Another area for improvement can be found in the number and location of participating companies for this study. The present paper has only analyzed two manufacturing companies in UK, thus the application of the findings might not be appropriate for other manufacturing companies in other countries. Future study should definitely increase the number of participating companies from different regions of the world where influencing factors such as business environment, business practices, and the strategic alternatives available for the company to pursue might be different.
By and large, the study on agile manufacturing in practice by Sharifi and Zhang is fairly comprehensive and well developed in terms of its content and method used. The development and application of the proposed methodology for achieving agility in manufacturing is also well presented in such detail and appropriate way. They have also performed an extensive research and review of literature relevant to the subject to be used as a basis for the formation of the methodology to help manufacturing companies make strategic decisions in the pursuit of agile manufacturing.
Sharifi and Zhang have also made a great effort in collecting the data and information used for the application of the methodology in the two companies. These collection of data was obtained during the previous phases of the research by determining various aspects of the companies like the level of agility needed, the abilities of the companies in response to unpredictable changes, the capability required by the company to respond to changes in appropriate manner. In addition, data and information were acquired by examining the business environment, speculating the available strategic alternatives, and identifying the practices that could support the company’s approach toward agility.
Despite of its well-established content, this study is subject to improvements due to some limitations. In some practical areas, the proposed methodology still needs a more advanced research, particularly in defining the relationship between agility capabilities and agility practices. A more extensive study in identifying the exact domain of capabilities, the corresponding practices, and the appropriate ways of implementing and assessing the capabilities would provide a more accurate guideline for organizations in pursuit of agile manufacturing.
Another area for improvement can be found in the number and location of participating companies for this study. The present paper has only analyzed two manufacturing companies in UK, thus the application of the findings might not be appropriate for other manufacturing companies in other countries. Future study should definitely increase the number of participating companies from different regions of the world where influencing factors such as business environment, business practices, and the strategic alternatives available for the company to pursue might be different.
By and large, the study on agile manufacturing in practice by Sharifi and Zhang is fairly comprehensive and well developed in terms of its content and method used. The development and application of the proposed methodology for achieving agility in manufacturing is also well presented in such detail and appropriate way. Nonetheless, the proposed methodology still needs a more advanced research, particularly in defining the relationship between agility capabilities and agility practices. Although the proposed methodology is to be fully developed and validated, it still constitutes an essential effort in this regard and assists to bridge the gap between theory and practice in the agile manufacturing.

How does a company recover from negative media publicity when their oil tanker grounded on Bligh Reef, spilling nearly eleven million gallons of oil into the biologically rich waters of Prince William Sound, Alaska? This is the same question the executives of Exxon Corporation were asking themselves once they received word that one of their oil shipping container’s grounding had resulted in the largest oil spill known. After the Exxon Valdez ran aground in 18, causing one of the worst environmental disasters ever, company officials refused to comment to the public for days. Eleven million gallons of crude oil spread across 1,500 miles of coastline is not an easy problem to fix, hide or face the public with. The spill ended commercial fishing for several years, fouled area wildlife and left enduring scars on the mind of towns and villages around the Sound. Researchers who studied Cordova found a place battling depression, divorce and evacuation similar to ground zero in New York City. Among all the plaintiffs since the case began, 567 have died, more than 7 got divorced, more than 00 have filed for bankruptcy and more than 5,000 liens have been filed against individual shares by creditors.

Hiding behind the advice of lawyers, Exxon refused to admit the extent of the spill. Eventually Exxon launched a billion-dollar cleanup operation that involved scrubbing hundreds of miles of polluted beach and poisoned wildlife by hand. This cleanup raised the question of whether this was an appropriate environmental response or merely a public relations ploy to make the company look better in the eyes of the Alaskan community and World. After Exxon Corporations initial billion-dollar investment for cleanup was started the organization was then entangled in a legal battle with its insurance companies because they refused to reimburse Exxon for cleanup costs. The insurers argued, in part, that the massive fight escalating against the worst oil spill in U.S. history was nothing more than an expensive public relations exercise. This is a very conceivable argument, but Exxon had a responsibility to save their corporation by putting everything extra they had into the clean up process.
Essentially, Exxon wanted Lloyds their insurer and about 50 underwriters to pay $ 850 million in cleanup costs that it claimed were covered under its Global Corporate Excess policies. Because Exxon alleges that the insurers acted in bad faith in denying the claim, it is also attempted to seek damages, which under Texas insurance statutes are set at triple the claim plus attorneys fees. Exxons claims are for a large sum of money, but the size of the claim cannot justify the defendants’ breach of their duty of good faith and fair dealing. To date, Exxon -- one of the world’s largest corporations with annual profits greater than the gross domestic products of most smaller nations -- says it has spent $ .5 billion on cleanup-related costs and continues to incur expenses. Attorney generals from 7 states have signed a letter urging Exxon Corp. to end its court battles and appeals saying Exxons use of its economic strength to delay, and in many cases to deny, justice to the 40,000 people it has injured by the Exxon Valdez spill raises a significant concern, the attorneys wrote. In Cordova, Alaska a former fisherman Linden OToole, one of the people waiting for a damage award, said the pressure from so many attorney generals is probably Exxons worst nightmare. Exxon acted in poor faith when dealing with this matter by not admitting to its mistake and trying to dodge and avoid the total costs associated with problem. Many fisherman and families have went out of business and into debt in this town and other surrounding coastal towns in Alaska as a result of this large oil spill and environmental disaster. I feel that Exxon should have fully accepted its negative externalities and cared for the community, villagers as well as the waters it contaminated in full. This is a company with net profits near five billion a year, and they should have came straight forward with the residents effected, the world and admitted their guilt. They should have then apologized, paid out the lawsuits brought against them in an amount near $5. billion for punitive damages plus the $.5 billion for cleanup costs and avoided the appeals court. If this company would have acted in good faith and taken responsibility for their negligence, then they could possibly have increased their reputation in the oil industry and came out looking like a better environmental company in the eyes of the world. We cannot ignore the fact that this has happened and it was an accident, but we can only hope that the Prince William Sound fully recovers along with the wildlife and citizens affected. How does a company recover from negative media publicity when their oil tanker grounded on Bligh Reef, spilling nearly eleven million gallons of oil into the biologically rich waters of Prince William Sound, Alaska? This is the same question the executives of Exxon Corporation were asking themselves once they received word that one of their oil shipping container’s grounding had resulted in the largest oil spill known. After the Exxon Valdez ran aground in 18, causing one of the worst environmental disasters ever, company officials refused to comment to the public for days. Eleven million gallons of crude oil spread across 1,500 miles of coastline is not an easy problem to fix, hide or face the public with. The spill ended commercial fishing for several years, fouled area wildlife and left enduring scars on the mind of towns and villages around the Sound. Researchers who studied Cordova found a place battling depression, divorce and evacuation similar to ground zero in New York City. Among all the plaintiffs since the case began, 567 have died, more than 7 got divorced, more than 00 have filed for bankruptcy and more than 5,000 liens have been filed against individual shares by creditors.
According to the environmental organization Greenpeace, “Hill and Knowlton a reputable and world known public relations firm handled the damage control operation after the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska. Hill and Knowlton acknowledge that Exxon is one of its clients but denies any involvement in the public relations campaign after the Exxon Valdez spill” (http//webhome.idirect.com/~rouleau/hcorp.htm)
Hiding behind the advice of lawyers, Exxon refused to admit the extent of the spill. Eventually Exxon launched a billion-dollar cleanup operation that involved scrubbing hundreds of miles of polluted beach and poisoned wildlife by hand. This cleanup raised the question of whether this was an appropriate environmental response or merely a public relations ploy to make the company look better in the eyes of the Alaskan community and World. After Exxon Corporations initial billion-dollar investment for cleanup was started the organization was then entangled in a legal battle with its insurance companies because they refused to reimburse Exxon for cleanup costs. The insurers argued, in part, that the massive fight escalating against the worst oil spill in U.S. history was nothing more than an expensive public relations exercise. This is a very conceivable argument, but Exxon had a responsibility to save their corporation by putting everything extra they had into the clean up process.
Essentially, Exxon wanted Lloyds their insurer and about 50 underwriters to pay $ 850 million in cleanup costs that it claimed were covered under its Global Corporate Excess policies. Because Exxon alleges that the insurers acted in bad faith in denying the claim, it is also attempted to seek damages, which under Texas insurance statutes are set at triple the claim plus attorneys fees. Exxons claims are for a large sum of money, but the size of the claim cannot justify the defendants’ breach of their duty of good faith and fair dealing. To date, Exxon -- one of the world’s largest corporations with annual profits greater than the gross domestic products of most smaller nations -- says it has spent $ .5 billion on cleanup-related costs and continues to incur expenses. Attorney generals from 7 states have signed a letter urging Exxon Corp. to end its court battles and appeals saying Exxons use of its economic strength to delay, and in many cases to deny, justice to the 40,000 people it has injured by the Exxon Valdez spill raises a significant concern, the attorneys wrote. In Cordova, Alaska a former fisherman Linden OToole, one of the people waiting for a damage award, said the pressure from so many attorney generals is probably Exxons worst nightmare. Exxon acted in poor faith when dealing with this matter by not admitting to its mistake and trying to dodge and avoid the total costs associated with problem. Many fisherman and families have went out of business and into debt in this town and other surrounding coastal towns in Alaska as a result of this large oil spill and environmental disaster. I feel that Exxon should have fully accepted its negative externalities and cared for the community, villagers as well as the waters it contaminated in full. This is a company with net profits near five billion a year, and they should have came straight forward with the residents effected, the world and admitted their guilt. They should have then apologized, paid out the lawsuits brought against them in an amount near $5. billion for punitive damages plus the $.5 billion for cleanup costs and avoided the appeals court. If this company would have acted in good faith and taken responsibility for their negligence, then they could possibly have increased their reputation in the oil industry and came out looking like a better environmental company in the eyes of the world. We cannot ignore the fact that this has happened and it was an accident, but we can only hope that the Prince William Sound fully recovers along with the wildlife and citizens affected. Out of even bad things, good things do happen, said Steve Pennoyer, director of the National Marine Fisheries Service in Alaska. Mutually beneficial long-term relationships with customers, suppliers and employees is of key importance to us. We constantly look for better ways to support them and will respond to their changing requirements by broadening our capabilities and investing in new technologies. We believe in always doing what we say. If we make a mistake we will admit it, learn from it and carry on. The achievement of our mission will require all involved to constantly strive for improvement in quality, service, cooperation,
communication, mutual respect and trust” (ATK-engines).
ATK/Bay Area, Inc.’s mission statement sends a strong message to the company’s potential customers. The message conveyed suggests that ATK/Bay Area, Inc. will provide high quality products. The mission statement goes on to state, “If we make a mistake we will admit it, learn from it and carry on”. This is designed to set the customer’s mind at ease. When I read this phrase, it reminds me of the old saying, “the customer is always right”.
The mission statement also addresses the company’s emphasis on high quality products, and addresses the issue by stating, “Provide remanufactured engines and related items of a consistently high quality”. This sends a strong message that says quality is of the utmost importance at ATK/Bay Area, Inc.
ATK/Bay Area, Inc. makes a bold statement to the company’s market in its mission statement. The company declares a desire to be known as the “preferred provider” remanufactured engines and parts. If I were a competitor, I would be taking this company seriously. This portion of the mission statement also addresses the company’s aspiration to have a strong public image, and states strongly that the company will correct any mistakes that it makes.
ATK/Bay Area, Inc. clearly suggests a willingness, on the company’s part, to take advantage of new technology. The mission statement states, “broadening our capabilities and investing in new technologies”. This phrase is fearless and exciting. It says that the company is not afraid of change and that if there are new and better ways of doing things, it will not be business as usual at ATK/Bay Area, Inc.
Perhaps the things that I liked best about this company’s mission statement is the way it addresses any concerns the employees may have about where they stand in the big picture. The statement “we provide an environment where people want to come to work because they can grow both personally and professionally” is a powerful statement, which tells a potential employee that he or she can go places in this company.
Although the shareholders are not specifically addressed in the mission statement, I believe the overall attitude of this statement is clearly designed to instill confidence among the shareholders.
I believe that this is a “big company” mission statement from a small company. These statements provide the audience with a clear direction of travel of the company, and I have the feeling that this company wants to go places. It wants to be the best and it is willing to go the extra mile. If ATK/Bay Area, Inc. puts as much effort and thought into the rest of its business venture as it did in the preparation of its mission statement, it will be very successful.
The second company I will discuss is Artic Cleaning. This company is based in Australia and provides cleaning services, performs daily task, and handles period tasks for businesses in Australia.

“The mission of Arctic Cleaning is to ensure clients receive optimum value at all times. This will be met through our commitment to strive for total customer satisfaction and achieved by our team who work continually to maintain our high level of quality and service” (Arctic Cleaning).
Artic Cleaning’s mission statement starts out strong. They make a strong appeal to the company’s targeted customers. The mission statement goes on to note, “commitment to strive for total customer satisfaction”. To a potential customer, this sounds a lot like satisfaction guarantee. The company is clearly making a pledge to the customers that they will be happy will the services provided by the company.
Artic Cleaning is also making a strong statement to its employees in its mission statement. The company leaves no room for doubt about where the responsibility for a satisfied customer lies. The statement, “Quality assurance is the central focus for each supervisor and manager in the company, being reflected in his or her job descriptions and job performance criteria” says it all. Managers and supervisors at Artic Cleaning will be held accountable. The company makes a small reference to a team environment; however, I get the feeling that the main focus of the mission and vision statements is geared toward the customers.
Artic Cleaning fails to address some important issues in either of the two statements. There really is not any sense of wanting to create a good public image, except for the quality assurance statements. There is also no mention of expansion or growth within the company’s market. Due to the company’s industry, I really did not expect to find much information about advancing technology; however, something along that same line would have indicated a desire to grow, as a company. After I read Artic Cleaning’s mission statement, I was left wondering where the company was headed. I did not get a sense of what the future holds for Artic Cleaning. The main point that took away from reading this statement is that the customer will be satisfied and the mangers were responsible for the satisfaction. Artic Cleaners mission statement read more like a directive to the mangers than outline of the company’s direction.
The third and final company that I will discuss will be the Ford Motor Company. Ford is a major global automobile manufacture. Interestingly, in addition to a mission statement, the Ford Motor Company also has a value statement, which I have included here.
· Mission Statement
“Our Mission We are a global, diverse family with a proud heritage, passionately committed to providing outstanding products and services” (Ford).
· Values Statement
“Our Values We do the right thing for our people, our environment and our society, but above all for our customers” (Ford).
I was surprised at the vagueness of the Ford Motor Company’s mission and value statements. At first I thought they were elegantly simplistic, straight to the point. However, after further review my opinion has changed. The value statement directly addresses the customers. This is good, but it only says that Ford is committed to doing the right thing for its customers. It makes no mention of how this is going to be accomplished. Neither of the two statements raises the issues of technology or expansion. Public image is addressed briefly in the value statement by the phrase, “we do the right thing for our people, our environment and our society”, however this is marginalized at the end of that same phrase, “but above all for our customers.”
I got the overall message that Ford wants to be the best, but what company does not want to be the best. There were many things left unanswered. Where is Ford heading? What is Ford involved in that makes the world a better place? Why should I work for Ford? How are the employees valued at the Ford Motor Company? I expected more out of a mission statement from a global organization that has been around for as long as Ford has.

The company makes a small reference to a team environment; however, I get the feeling that the main focus of the mission and vision statements is geared toward the customers.
Artic Cleaning fails to address some important issues in either of the two statements. There really is not any sense of wanting to create a good public image, except for the quality assurance statements. There is also no mention of expansion or growth within the company’s market. Due to the company’s industry, I really did not expect to find much information about advancing technology; however, something along that same line would have indicated a desire to grow, as a company. After I read Artic Cleaning’s mission statement, I was left wondering where the company was headed. I did not get a sense of what the future holds for Artic Cleaning. The main point that took away from reading this statement is that the customer will be satisfied and the mangers were responsible for the satisfaction. I have been challenged to compare the forecasts of three different institutions. Once the forecasts were assembled I researched the reasons why there may be differences between the institution’s forecasts. I have also discussed the implications of these forecasts on three planning issues within the organization. Factors such as inflation, unemployment, consumer spending and the overall level of output in the economy are covered by forecasts such as those put out by the government and financial institutions. Predictions are made and published regularly by governments throughout the West and private sector institutions. The results of the forecasts are in turn used as inputs to significant policy decisions, such as setting interest rates and deciding monetary policy. Additionally commercial businesses are also influenced by these forecasts regarding the scale of their commercial operations.
I have gathered three separate forecasts published by three different institutions and compared the results of these forecasts. The forecast findings are as followed

Although the above forecasts are very similar, there are slight differences in what they reported. There are some reasons as to why there are differences in the respective statistics prepared by the forecasters.
As the track record shows, forecasters collectively tend to err during periods that include either turning points in the business cycle or significant shifts in major economic trends. During these times it leaves more room for variances between each institutions forecast. Differences in the consumer price index series can be a result of which CPI is calculated. There are different series, one is known as the CPI-W (the price index for urban wage earners and clerical workers). A second, broader consumer price index series is the CPI-U (the price index for all urban consumers). CBO bases its inflation forecast on the CPI-U, a more widely cited measure of inflation and the one now used to index federal income tax brackets. Although annual fluctuations in the CPI-U and CPI-W are virtually indistinguishable, the indexes differ in some years. Other institutions may use the CPI-W to measure inflation, which could lead to slight differences in the forecasts.
CBO used monthly data published by the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System to calculate two-year averages of nominal short- and long-term interest rates. The forecasts of short-term interest rates were compared using historical values for two measures of the interest rate on three-month Treasury bills the new-issue rate and the secondary-market rate. The Administration forecasts the new-issue rate, which corresponds to the price of three-month bills auctioned by the Treasury Department--that is, it reflects the interest actually paid on that debt. CBO forecasts the secondary-market rate, which corresponds to the price of the three-month bills traded outside the Treasury auctions. Such transactions occur continually in markets that involve many more traders than do Treasury auctions. As a result, the secondary-market rate provides an updated evaluation of short-term federal debt by the wider financial community. CBO likewise compared the various forecasts of long-term interest rates using historical values for two measures of long-term rates the 10-year Treasury note rate. The way the numbers are determined plays the biggest role in the accuracy of the data. Each institution ay use different numbers to arrive at their forecasts, which can lead to the variance between their forecasts. When a company bases business decisions on these forecasts there can be implications on the planning within the company when they are inaccurate.
The forecasts of the unemployment rates, inflation rates, and the GDP can have implications on the planning for a business. Unemployment forecasts can affect planning in that if unemployment is high there are usually more people out looking for jobs. If the demand for jobs actually exceeds the number of jobs available then there are more chances of getting a more qualified employee for less money. Many people are willing to settle for slightly lower salaries when jobs are hard to come by. Knowing the forecast for unemployment allows you to better prepare for what kind of job seekers you will see.
The inflation rates have a large effect on the business success and the pricing strategies we plan. If inflation drops, as predicted, then a price increase could be expected. Depending on the elasticity of the company this could be good or bad. In the case of my company, it is very elastic and responds greatly to price changes. The good news is that a price increase would actually help us to increase profits. I have been challenged to compare the forecasts of three different institutions. Once the forecasts were assembled I researched the reasons why there may be differences between the institution’s forecasts. I have also discussed the implications of these forecasts on three planning issues within the organization. My findings and recommendations of changes to these planning issues in order to minimize potential risks or maximize opportunities follow in the paper below.
Macroeconomic Forecasts
Factors such as inflation, unemployment, consumer spending and the overall level of output in the economy are covered by forecasts such as those put out by the government and financial institutions. Predictions are made and published regularly by governments throughout the West and private sector institutions. The results of the forecasts are in turn used as inputs to significant policy decisions, such as setting interest rates and deciding monetary policy. Additionally commercial businesses are also influenced by these forecasts regarding the scale of their commercial operations.
I have gathered three separate forecasts published by three different institutions and compared the results of these forecasts. The forecast findings are as followed

Although the above forecasts are very similar, there are slight differences in what they reported. There are some reasons as to why there are differences in the respective statistics prepared by the forecasters.
As the track record shows, forecasters collectively tend to err during periods that include either turning points in the business cycle or significant shifts in major economic trends. During these times it leaves more room for variances between each institutions forecast. Differences in the consumer price index series can be a result of which CPI is calculated. There are different series, one is known as the CPI-W (the price index for urban wage earners and clerical workers). A second, broader consumer price index series is the CPI-U (the price index for all urban consumers). CBO bases its inflation forecast on the CPI-U, a more widely cited measure of inflation and the one now used to index federal income tax brackets. Although annual fluctuations in the CPI-U and CPI-W are virtually indistinguishable, the indexes differ in some years. Other institutions may use the CPI-W to measure inflation, which could lead to slight differences in the forecasts.
CBO used monthly data published by the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System to calculate two-year averages of nominal short- and long-term interest rates. The forecasts of short-term interest rates were compared using historical values for two measures of the interest rate on three-month Treasury bills the new-issue rate and the secondary-market rate. The Administration forecasts the new-issue rate, which corresponds to the price of three-month bills auctioned by the Treasury Department--that is, it reflects the interest actually paid on that debt. CBO forecasts the secondary-market rate, which corresponds to the price of the three-month bills traded outside the Treasury auctions. Such transactions occur continually in markets that involve many more traders than do Treasury auctions. As a result, the secondary-market rate provides an updated evaluation of short-term federal debt by the wider financial community. CBO likewise compared the various forecasts of long-term interest rates using historical values for two measures of long-term rates the 10-year Treasury note rate. The way the numbers are determined plays the biggest role in the accuracy of the data. Each institution ay use different numbers to arrive at their forecasts, which can lead to the variance between their forecasts. When a company bases business decisions on these forecasts there can be implications on the planning within the company when they are inaccurate.
The forecasts of the unemployment rates, inflation rates, and the GDP can have implications on the planning for a business. Unemployment forecasts can affect planning in that if unemployment is high there are usually more people out looking for jobs. If the demand for jobs actually exceeds the number of jobs available then there are more chances of getting a more qualified employee for less money. Many people are willing to settle for slightly lower salaries when jobs are hard to come by. Knowing the forecast for unemployment allows you to better prepare for what kind of job seekers you will see.
The inflation rates have a large effect on the business success and the pricing strategies we plan. If inflation drops, as predicted, then a price increase could be expected. Depending on the elasticity of the company this could be good or bad. In the case of my company, it is very elastic and responds greatly to price changes. The good news is that a price increase would actually help us to increase profits. The groups had to be no more than four members; therefore my group consisted of myself, Rajbir Bisla, Sam Hanover and Kiran Kaur Cheema. We each had different responsibilities mine and Rajbir’s responsibility was to direct the film and do the camera work, Sam’s was responsible for the storyboard, acting and the sound and lastly Kiran was responsible for acting thinking of different camera angles. Sam and me did the majority of the editing merely because Kiran and Rajbir ere not familiar with “I-movie” software but we all did some editing and camera work.
Before we could start our production we had to research the target audience and the genre of the new movie. We conducted a questionnaire within our media studies class using a sample frame of 10 (5 boys and 5 girls) to see what other students aged between 16-17 thought the typical conventions of a thriller movie was and what type of content is contained in a 15 to 18 age certificate also what other examples they gave of thriller movies.
The feedback we received from the questionnaires was both qualitative material as well as quantitative material this allowed us to draw statistics and conclusions (Refer to appendix ) of what they were expecting to see in a thriller movie. The results showed most people thought that the typical media conventions are a murder, suspense and climax, investigation of some sort (e.g. murder investigation) and rivalry gangs. (Refer to appendix).
We decided to produce an opening sequence to a Gangster Thriller movie, in order to make this I had to research the typical conventions of a gangster
movie I watched two movies which were “Donnie Brasco and Scar face” to get a better perspective of what types of props, location, lighting, sound, camera shots and angles (Mise en scène) we should use to give the best effect.
We ended using the 18-age certificate, as most gangster movies are because they contain violent scenes, bad language and sex-orientated scenes therefore these movies are not appropriate for the younger audiences.
Gangster movies are extremely popular especially amongst the male population, where as girls can sometimes find it hard to stomach the gritty blood scenes. The male population can relate to gangster movies more than the females as they find guns, shooting people and fighting scenes the best aspects of a movie.
Once we had our target audience, age certificate and genre researched we could start the planning process. The first thing we had to plan and organise was our storyline Sam and Kiran both came up with two different possible storylines for our movie so I decided to combine them together (see appendix ) however by combining them the storyline had become to broad and we lost ourselves and the plot of the storyline.
Sam came up with another possible storyline with the gangster thriller genre about two undercover cops (see appendix 4) we decided to follow this storyline through as it had a twist in the end because Kiran is also an undercover cop but the audience don’t realise that at first. We had to produce a storyboard so that we would know what angles to shoot and whether it was a close up shot or a far away one. The storyboard acts as a guide for us so we don’t get side tracked or film unnecessary scenes when we begin our filming process. Whilst we were producing the storyboard we had to consider the Mise en scène and the locations we wanted to film the scenes. Once we had an idea of the locations we wanted we had to go out and the find them, we looked at the layout of many bars and pubs before we made our final decision which was to film in Hobnobs. We chose the new drama studio to film in as it has black walls and gives the element of a dark and secret room. Once we had our locations we asked permission to film there.
The next step was to find actors to play the characters Sam and Kiran were the two undercover cops; we chose Ali Hussain to play the Don in our movie because he has the body physic, attitude and the speech of a typical Don, we chose Dave Thaya to play the Don’s associate because Dave has the quite look but he knows the score, Sam was chosen to play the undercover cop because he has the charm to fool people and keep cool when in dangerous situations and lastly we chose Kiran to play the female undercover cop because again she too has the charm to fool people and she comes across as a strong independent women.
Once our storyboard was completed and we had the equipment, location and actors/actresses we commenced filming. The first time we filmed the opening shots of Sam getting ready we couldn’t get the framing and lighting right so we had to re shoot the scene again in another set of toilets and get the Mise en scène exact to produce a high quality shot.
Our storyboard illustrates a series of short close up shots of Sam getting ready in the first scene as this establishes the character and what his role is in the movie. The opening shots of Sam are shot from his neck to his waist this is because we wanted to keep his identity hidden in the beginning. The first scene had mostly steady short close ups shots this was because we didn’t want to bore the audience with Sam getting ready so we filmed the shots short and added transitions so show that time had passed.
Our second series of shots were mainly medium length shots with gradual zooms to express the actor/actress’s facial expression or to define an object (e.g. when we zoomed in on the money). We didn’t use any tracking shots this was because they would not have been as effective as simple panning or tilting up/down shots. Rajbir and me decided to combine the techniques, we combined a medium length shot with a gradual tilt up and a slight zoom in to define the subject in the frame this was one continuous shot which also gave an effective result.
The third series of shots were again mainly quick short shots and this was because when Sam was having a conversation with the Don (Ali) and his associate (Dave) Rajbir and me filmed over the shoulder shots so the frame showed Sam speaking and the corner of Dave’s shoulder.

For the opening credits I recorded the last scenes of “Eminem’s music video � Loose yourself. It was the skyline of Detroit at night” with my camera then I imported it on to the Apple Mac and we used it as the background for the opening credits. Our credits were written in red because it was the colour that stood out the most against the dark skyline they appeared in the middle of the screen to give the best effect. The name of our movie is called “Too Deep” because the undercover cops (Sam and Kiran) have got in too deep with their investigation. We decided to have the credits of the movie title at the end because it looks more effective and the film will begin after the title comes up, so our -minute movie is the introduction to the film.
We all contributed into this production in different ways and the outcome of the movie was very good and we were all pleased with the final product and as a group we worked very well together as we combined each other’s ideas.

For the opening credits I recorded the last scenes of “Eminem’s music video � Loose yourself. It was the skyline of Detroit at night” with my camera then I imported it on to the Apple Mac and we used it as the background for the opening credits. Our credits were written in red because it was the colour that stood out the most against the dark skyline they appeared in the middle of the screen to give the best effect. The name of our movie is called “Too Deep” because the undercover cops (Sam and Kiran) have got in too deep with their investigation. We decided to have the credits of the movie title at the end because it looks more effective and the film will begin after the title comes up, so our -minute movie is the introduction to the film.
We all contributed into this production in different ways and the outcome of the movie was very good and we were all pleased with the final product and as a group we worked very well together as we combined each other’s ideas.
