In Lord of the Flies, William Golding uses many types of symbolism. He uses examples such as the fire, the conch and hair growth. More specifically Golding states the condition of the conch, the state of the fire and the length of the boy’s hair to symbolize the savages that live within in the boys.

Golding uses the length of the boy’s hair to symbolize savageness in the boys. Initially, the longest hair grows on Jack, the most savage of the boys, and is first mentioned as he is on all fours smelling animal droppings. “His sandy hair, considerably longer than it had been when they dropped in, was lighter now; and his bare back was a mass of dark freckles and peeling sunburn” (Golding 48). Jack does not fight the growth of his hair and lets it could his mind. As the story progresses, his hair grows longer and Jack becomes more familiar with evil. Jack’s hair growth is mentioned when he is down on all fours, smelling fresh pig droppings, acting like an animal and a savage. Next, Ralph’s hair grows long, but he cannot bear being in his face and is always pushing it out of his eyes to remember things. “ Ralph pushed the idiot hair out of his eyes and looked at Piggy. ‘But the ….oh…the fire! Of course, the fire!’ “ (141). Jack does not like the hair as it is called “idiot hair”. When the hair gets in Ralph’s face, he forgets what he is going to say, but as soon as he pushes it out of the way he remembers. Ralph’s long hair is making him become a more uncivilized person, and allows evil to cloud his mind but he will continue to fight against it. Lastly, Piggy’s short hair lets him remain the civil person he is and think straight.

He was the only boy on the island whose hair never seemed

to grow. The rest were shock headed, but Piggy’s hair still




lay in wisps over his head as though boldness were his natural

state and this imperfect covering would soon go, like the velvet on a young stag’s antlers (64).

Piggy is the only one on the island whose hair has remained the same and maybe even receded. He is the only one who is very intelligent and does not allow the evil to take over his mind. Piggy understands that the beast is a mind game and still believes that the conch holds authority.

Golding uses the state that the conch is in to symbolize savageness.

First, when the boys found the conch, it was in perfect condition and had a deep, rich color to it.” In color the shell was a deep cream, touched here and there with fading pink. Between the point, worn away in to a little hole, and the pink lips of the mouth, lay eighteen inches of shell with a slight spiral twist and covered with a delicate, embossed pattern” (16). The conch was in good condition at the time when the boys behaved like civil human beings and not savage animals. When Ralph and Piggy found the conch they used to call for others. Many kids came to the sound of the conch and the group of boys decided to use it to call meetings. Secondly, when the conch’s vibrant colors began to fade, the boys separate and act uncivil. “ The group of boys looked at the white shell with affectionate respect. Piggy placed it in Ralph’s hand and the littluns, seeing the familiar symbol, started to come back” (141). Golding mentioned the bleached color of the conch at the some time the savage group of hunters state the fire. The boys are beginning to spread apart and hate each other. Because the conch is still useable, it still maintains some power of order, but only for the one who are not savage. Lastly, when the conch ceases to exist, there is no order among the boys, and they are all savages. “ The rock struck Piggy a glancing blow from chin to knee; the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist” (180). The conch exploded when Roger killed Piggy. All sense of order was lost and the conch no longer held order. Golding uses the conch to show savageness because its condition also states the amount of power it holds.

The condition of the fire is also used by Golding to symbolize savageness that lives in the boys. Initially, the reason the boys had for building a fire was so that they could be rescued and get off the island.

Almost at once a thin trickle of smoke rose up and made him cough. Jack knelt too and blew gently, so that the smoke drifted away, thickening, and a tiny flame appeared. The flame, nearly visible at first in that bright sunlight enveloped a small twig, grew, was enriched with color and reached up to branch, which exploded with a sharp crack. The flame flapped higher and the boys broke into a cheer (41).

When the flame first appeared, all of the boys were ecstatic. The only reason that the boys decided to build a fire in the first place was so that they could be rescued. At this point all of the boys are united, friends need each other’s help. Next, Ralph restricts where the fire is allowed to be. “ Now I say this and make it a rule, because I am chief. We won’t have fire anywhere but on the mountain. Ever” (81). Ralph restricts where the fires is allowed to be because other fires just waste time. The only important thing to him and the others civil ones is being rescued, but for the savages, killing pigs and eating is more important. The group had broken apart and the fire is only allowed on the mountain since they can barely keep it going. Lastly, the savages steal the only fire there is, lessening the chances of being rescued, “ ‘ They’ve got out fire.’ Rage shrilled in his voice. ‘ They stole it’” (16). The savages stole the fire and right after that, Piggy is killed and all hell breaks loose. When the savages stole the fire, they also stole any order left on the island. This loss of order results in Piggy’s death and the breaking of the conch.

William Golding uses the conch, fire and hair growth to symbolize the boy’s savageness. When the boy’s hair grows longer, the conch’s color fades and eventually breaks, and the fire’s condition, all symbolize the animal instincts that live in them.

Add enough water to barely cover. Add the remaining 1-tablespoon butter, the lemon juice, and bouillon cube. Simmer, covered, over medium heat until softened, 15 minutes.

Drain the endives and reserve the cooking liquid for another use (add it to soup). Arrange the endives in a single layer in a glass or enamelled baking dish. Spoon the cream evenly over the endives and sprinkle with the nutmeg and pepper. Bake until the endives are fully soft and have absorbed most of the cream, 15 to 0 minutes.





Meal Patterns

We eat breakfast around seven o’clock, lunch around noon which is very early compared with other countries, we have our evening meal between 5-6, for the remainder of the day sometimes snacks are eaten. Christmas which is celebrated in different ways but usually with fondue of little pieces of meat. On New Year we eat cold meats with raw vegetables and rolls. On the 1st of November is “Allerheilige” as a reminder of the death, with this day we eat waffles. We have our Pancake Day on the nd of February. We once again eat waffles on the 11th of November for “wapenstilstand” to remind us when World War 1 finished. Until a few years ago we had had another “wapenstilstand” on the 4th of May as a reminder of World War but the government refuses to recognise this day now.

Then a traditional celebration that we have and comes from Germany is carnival. Period of days, antecedent to the 40-day period of fasting. It is celebrated with costumes, parades and parties.

What foods are available in Ireland?

Most of the typical Belgian foods are not found in Ireland, sometimes in Superquin some dirty Belgian vegetables can be found but there is too little choice and it is 10 times too expensive. 4 pound cubed beef stew meat

pound chopped onions

cups of beer

1/ cup flour

6 crushed garlic cloves

1/4 cup wine vinegar

cups of hot beef broth

Pepper to taste

Roll the beef cubes lightly in flour. Heat oil and brown the meat. Remove the meat and brown the garlic and onion. Put all the ingredients (keeping aside half the wine vinegar) in an ovenproof pan. Cover and bake in a pre-heated oven (5 F.) for hours. Remove from the oven and add the remaining wine vinegar. Bring to a boil, cover and cook at a low heat for 15 minutes.

The article by Sharifi and Zhang is outlining a developed methodology for achieving agility in manufacturing organization and describing its implementation and validation in two case study companies. In developing the methodology, the authors used two empirical studies the concept of agility (Dove, 16; Kidd, 15), and the conceptual model of agility (Zhang and Sharifi, 000) as their main references.

Basically there are three major stages composed in the methodology the determination of a company’s agility needs and it current agility level, the determination of agility capabilities required in order for the company to become agile, and the identification of agility providers or business practices and tools which could lead to the recognized capabilities for the company. In order to give a better picture of the methodology, the authors created a graphical form of the methodology in figure of the article.

In the first stage of the methodology, an assessment model is developed to study the conditions in which a company struggles for success and to provide a mindset for the company to move toward agility. This includes two practical tools, referred to as tool one and tool two. Tool one is used to determine the degree of turbulence with a range between 1 and 10. If the score is closer to 10, it means that the more turbulent is the company’s business environment, the more agile the company needs to be. Based on this result the second tool is designed to determine the level of company’s agility. There are two possible outcomes that can be expected from this tool Gap analysis in which a speculative interpretation can be made to specify the level of agility needed, and direct result which indicates the company’s weak points as well as how to respond to them in a proper manner.

The second stage, which is the determination of agility capabilities, is carried out with the assistance of a network model with which external and internal changes/pressures effecting manufacturing organizations are classified and represented as inputs. The agility capabilities required to challenge and overcome the changes/pressures are represented as the outputs. In addition to that, an industrial questionnaire and a series of case studies are used to establish the network connection




Finally, in the last stage, the authors identify a list of business practices, methods, tools, and techniques as the agility providers. The importance of these agility providers to various capabilities is represented by a network relationship. The results from the network model described in the second stage are used as inputs to produce a set of outputs representing the importance of individual agility providers to a company.

In implementing this methodology, the authors selected two UK manufacturing companies that had responded to the previous phases of the assessment work. The first company is a leading manufacturer of domestic cookers, which appears to be the only manufacturer that is profitable in this business. The second company is a manufacturer of high-technology electronics components and devices established to supply its mother’s company. This article review will only discuss about company one because the procedures used for both companies are pretty similar.

In the implementation, both of these companies went through the three major stages of the methodology explained before the assessment model, determination of agility capabilities, and determination of agility providers. For simplification, the last two stages are referred to as “the practical tool”. For company one, the result of the assessment model reveal three major points

• Company one needs a moderate level of agility, though it is not an urgent agenda.

• The areas in table I must be taken into consideration as potentially threatening factors when defining and designing the company’s strategy.

• The company’s perception of its level of agility is higher than the perceived level and than the average score of tool number two of the assessment model.

The next stage, referred to as “the practical tool” is applied in three steps

1. Determining the drivers of the agility. Table III lists the types of agility drivers.

. Determining the required capabilities. Table IV lists 0 prioritized capabilities.

. Determining the practices and actions.

Based on the practical tool this company has ability level of 6.5 and less, therefore it needs the following important capabilities sensing, perceiving and anticipating changes, immediate reaction to changes, strategic vision, co-operation (internal and external), products/services quality, cost effectiveness, and people flexibility. The practical tool also provides guidance for the company to choose the appropriate practices. Table VI lists some of the practices that company one has adapted in responding to the change factors. CRITIQUE

Sharifi and Zhang have done an excellent work in developing a methodology for achieving agility in manufacturing and presenting details in its implementation and validation in the two case studies companies. They have also performed an extensive research and review of literature relevant to the subject to be used as a basis for the formation of the methodology to help manufacturing companies make strategic decisions in the pursuit of agile manufacturing.

Sharifi and Zhang have also made a great effort in collecting the data and information used for the application of the methodology in the two companies. These collection of data was obtained during the previous phases of the research by determining various aspects of the companies like the level of agility needed, the abilities of the companies in response to unpredictable changes, the capability required by the company to respond to changes in appropriate manner. In addition, data and information were acquired by examining the business environment, speculating the available strategic alternatives, and identifying the practices that could support the company’s approach toward agility.

Despite of its well-established content, this study is subject to improvements due to some limitations. In some practical areas, the proposed methodology still needs a more advanced research, particularly in defining the relationship between agility capabilities and agility practices. A more extensive study in identifying the exact domain of capabilities, the corresponding practices, and the appropriate ways of implementing and assessing the capabilities would provide a more accurate guideline for organizations in pursuit of agile manufacturing.

Another area for improvement can be found in the number and location of participating companies for this study. The present paper has only analyzed two manufacturing companies in UK, thus the application of the findings might not be appropriate for other manufacturing companies in other countries. I started the theme Art and Architecture by producing a series of design sheets in a wide range of media across a series of subjects. These include ceramics, d, fine art and textiles. In each subject I started different. For example, in ceramics I started looking at architecture and recreating it. Whilst in textiles I was producing several experiments with different materials.

Within a couple of weeks into term I went to Venice an Barcelona for 5 days where I collected primary research. I also produced observational drawings of what I saw and examples artists work, such as Arman, Rossi, Bennoton, Pomoro and Matise. I also visited galleries. These include Gallerie Dell Academia and The International Galleria of Modern art.

On my return I worked into the initial sketches from Venice and Barcelona using a. variety of media including sowing, perspex, clay, watercolour, etching and paints. I liked the etching best as this was a new media and process to me and I was looking forward to work with it. I also achieved a series of good quality prints which I will mount. I also did the same into my design sheets

Once I got my design sheets going I started developing test pieces and maquettes using my influence of Venice and Barcelona my drawings/paintings and artists. I experimented with different mark making techniques using ink, mono printing and paints. I also had a go on the sowing machine trying to recreate a photograph of Venice I took. I found this quite hard at first but with time and practise I improved and felt more confident using the sowing machine. I glazed my test pieces which I made in ceramics as well using a variety of different glazes because I wanted to see what different glazes to with different oxides.




I have learnt a lot about different techniques and process throughout this term. They include etching, using a sowing machine and developed mono printing. If I had to do this unit again I would liked to develop more by using more glazes and oxides as it would give me more of an variety of different effects you can achieve. I would have liked more time to develop my d model as I found it hard to join the rods together and took me over a week to come up with a solution. I am now ready to take my ideas further to develop a final outcome.

Currently, I work as a human resources generalist at ARC. Through my three years of employment with ARC, I have observed the different styles of conflict management. As part of the management team, I must be able to deal with conflict on a day-to-day basis. Conflict is inevitable within any organization.

Upper management of ARC has different styles of conflict management that it utilizes amongst its staff. The Chief Financial Officer of ARC, Joe Scrip, utilizes avoidance as a conflict management style. When a disagreement occurs within the accounting department, he pretends the conflict does not exist. He hopes with time the disagreement will eventually go away. Avoidance is not a practical style of managing conflict. The underlying tension within the department never really goes away.




The human resources director of ARC, Mary Bruno, utilizes the collaboration style of conflict management. As the director of human resources, Mary is able to listen to both sides of a disagreement and distinguish the best course of action that needs to be taken. She bases her decision upon what is best for the organization. Ultimately, Mary’s goal is to solve the problem by raising all of the relevant issues and openly discussing the issues with the parties involved. The final result is a win-win situation amongst the employees that the conflict involved.

Occasionally, arguments may occur that can only be resolved through the authoritative style of conflict management. The authoritative style is utilized when quick and decisive action is vital or when unpopular action needs to be taken. The Chief Operations Officer of ARC, Karry Riddell is the manager that would utilize this style of management. The authoritative style is needed in the agency when an employee works in a small area have tried to work through a disagreement, but fail doing so. Karry would dictate a solution for the employees to follow. This particular style is not effective, eventually the conflict occurs again within a short period of time.

While observing the different management styles within the agency, I agree with the human resource director’s style of dealing with conflict. In any type of disagreement, both side of a story need to be heard. Many times an argument can be resolved fairly through listening, discussing, and negotiating with the parties involved. A manager, I would take into consideration what is best for the agency when resolving a disagreement. A conflict resolved correctly the first time will save the agency time, money, and heartache.

The results of the assessment on page 56 of Organizational Behavior, concluded that my style of conflict management depends on the type of situation which may arise. The assessment scores are as follows twelve on collaborating and ten on compromising, avoiding, and accommodating. The scores reflect my character and my approach. The field of human resources requires a person to be able to collaborate with others.

An important historic character was born on January 6, 1880. His name was Douglas MacArthur. He was the son of Lt. General Arthur MacArthur, who won the Civil War. The start of his career was when he graduated college with the highest honors from West Point University in 10.

In 150, at the beginning of the Korean War, he was awarded the Supreme United Nations Leader, and became governor. In 151 Harry S. Truman relieved him from his command. Since MacArthur was mad at Truman MacArthur ran against him for president in 15 but didn’t make it. His last 1 years was spent in New York speaking out on political issues. General Douglas MacArthur died at Walter Reed Army Hospital on April 14, 164. He was 84 years old. Before burying him in Norfolk, Virginia, MacArthur’s body lay in state in New York City so that people could pay tribute to him.

Summer of my German soldier is a very captivating story and entertaining story. The book is very interesting and attention getting. The movie that is based off the book is also interesting but not as good as the book. If we compare the two they reveal they’re many differences in style, context, feeling, and emotion but at the same time, they reveal their differences. Through this piece of writing, I hope to show the similarities and differences between the two works of art.

Patty, the main character in both the movie and the book is very multi dimensional person. Meaning that she has many sides to her. For example, she has a side that always loves to lie to people, but she has a side that always wants to help and be compassionate to everyone that is around her. In both the book and the movie Patty is surrounded by people that she loves and people love her. In the movie and the book, there are also some people that do not love her. The people that do not love her still do have her love even though she does not have there’s. Through out both the book and the movie I began to understand that there are the people that make her feel that she is valued and some that don’t. At dictionary.com, the definition of value is Worth in usefulness or importance to the possessor. Both the movie and the book showed how people valued Patty but the book showed it differently then the movie did.

When I started reading the book, I met and very nice character by the name of Ruth. Ruth in both the book and the movie is Ruth’s family’s housekeeper. She does many things in the house for the family. As the book and the movie move along, I began to understand Patty and Ruth’s relationship. I understood that they are very close and tight while they also share everything with each other. Ruth shows Patty that she really cares about her and that Patty is of something of value to her. Ruth is always interested in Patty and her life. In the book, it was conved to me that she was involved in every aspect of Patty’s life.

Every day before Patty left for her days activities she always had a nice conversation with her and made her breakfast, which Patty came to love, and like a lot. This is how the book showed how Ruth valued Patty. The movie shows how Ruth valued Patty in a different way. The movie showed that Ruth did value Patty but in a different way then the book did. The movie showed Patty always eating Ruth’s breakfast that she cooked but it did not show them always having a conversation together. It only showed them talking briefly and not sharing in depth conversations as it did in the book.




Patty did not only come close to Ruth but she also met an older man named Anton. Anton was a German who was caught by the United States and brought back to the US as a POW (Prisoner of War). When he first got to Patty’s home town he was taken to a prisoner camp near the town. Then one day all the POW’s including Anton came in to Patty’s family store to buy some straw hats. Patty was in there and Anton caught her eye and attention. From there many things happened such as Anton escaping from the POW camp and Patty providing him with a hideout. This was all shown and written in the same way. The only difference from the book to the movie is that Anton shows and expresses less expression then the books expresses through the writing. For example, when Patty and Anton are in the hideout talking in the book their conversations seem more personal and deeper in thought while in the movie they seem like they have a conversation just to have one.

Not only does Ruth and Anton show that Patty is valued but also her grandparents show that she is valued. In both the book and the movie the take her in at the end of each and care for her and nurture her all they can.

At the same time, Patty has people that love her and people that claim to love her. One person that has a large part in her life is her father. Patty’s father is one of the characters that claims to love her but does not show it nor make her feel like she is loved by him. Her father throughout the book and movie gets mad at her in deals with her making him mad in different ways depending if it was the move or the book. In the movie, her father just yells at her and verbal abuses her while in the movie he beats her with his belt.

When the inspector starts to question Birling, he goes on the back foot straight away; he denies knowing the girl at first. But when he sees the picture he can’t deny it anymore.

But the inspector has a chance to show Gerald and Eric the photo but he doesn’t this slows the pace down to what he likes. She’s acting as almost a side-kick to the inspector, when he’s not there she’s asking questions and inquiring.

She refused her point blank because of that and because she wasn’t very open about her situation. But what makes Mrs Birling look cold and silly is that Eva Smith was having a baby. The inspector tricked Mrs Birling into confessing, as well as putting the blame on her son. In a way the inspector used everyone against themselves. He used there arrogance and stupidity to get what he needed from them. This phrase “To do my duty,” Is said just before Eric arrives and sounds as though he’s been doing nothing up until know and he’s waiting to make the final judgement. After interviewing Eric he says they’re all to blame some more than others. But they all treated her like nothing they threw her out and took advantage of her because of her strong will and mind her good looks and her desperation. The Puritan society was a creation of a theocratic utopia or” perfect society” from the fraudulent Anglican Church. And would that I might endure his agony, as well as mine!” (64) And “Many people refused to interpret the scarlet A by its original signification. They said that it meant Able; so strong was Hester Prynne, with a woman’s strength.” (148). Hester Prynne is identified here as being an adulterer, but more importantly she has gone against the ethics of the Puritan Society, where lying and adultery were considered to be atrocious sins. The “original signification” of the letter A illustrates that Hester Prynne is indeed an adulterer. In The Crucible, Hale and Elizabeth declare “Do you know your Commandment’s, Elizabeth? I surely do. There be no mark of blame upon my life, Mr. Hale. I am a covenanted Christian woman” (64) .This deliberation proves that in Salem, there was a strong sense of religion that was used a conduct to everyday life. Over an extensive period of time, she begins to develop an acceptance of both her punishment and most importantly her reputation. rescued and raised by another couple. After many years, Oedipus visits a

different oracle and is informed that one day he will kill his father and

sleep with his mother. He flees his home for fear that he is a danger to

his parents safety. The frightened Oedipus travels to Thebes, but on the

journey he becomes engaged in a quarrel. He kills King Laios and Laios men

not realizing that the king is his biological father. Af ter reaching

Thebes he becomes the new king by solving a riddle and lifting a plaque

from the city. Oedipus quickly marries a woman named Iocaste, the queen,

and together they have four children. In Thebes the murder of the old King

Laios remains unknown, a plaque is again placed upon the city by the gods.

Oedipus, being the new leader of Thebes, pledges to discover the identity

of the murderer so he can end the disaster. In his searching, Oedipus

discovers that he is the murderer of the king and eventually discovers that

Iocaste is really his own mother. In a Greek tragedy the hero is a

character amply capable of choices, capable, too of accepting the

consequences. Whether Oedipus sufferings are due to a flaw of character

or to an error of judgement, we discover that his downfall results from

acts for which he himself is responsible.



Oedipus is responsible for his own downfall. Through anger he lost

control of his actions. On his way to Thebes, Oedipus came upon a chariot

drawn by horses. As the charioteer pushed him off the road, Oedipus struck

him with rage.



The old man saw me/ and brought his double goad down upon my head/

Swinging my club in this right hand I knocked him / Out of his car

and he rolled on the ground./ I killed him/ I killed them all.

(S 117).



Oedipus never stopped to consider his actions. He unknowingly

fulfilled half of the prophecy by letting his anger get the best of him.

He was capable of controlling his emotions, but chose not to. He is

responsible for the consequences of his fathers death.



Physical and Intellectual blindness resulting from Oedipus

arrogant judgement of himself lead to his ruin. He is respected by Thebes

and thought of as the smartest human for solving the Sphinxs riddle. As a

result, he gains too much pride and confidence and begins to believe he is

untouchable. In the beginning of the play Oedipus has perfect vision,

however, he is blind and ignorant to the truth about himself and his past.

He desperately wants to know, to see, but he cannot. His actions must

somehow overcome his blindness. Ironically, into the play is introduced a

prophet, a seer, Teresias, who is physically blind, but who is clairvoyant.

Teresias says to Oedipus, I tell you,no man that walks upon the earth/

shall be rooted out more horribly than you (S1. . 1117). This just

reaffirms Oedipus as a man ignorant to the true appearance of things - this

blind man can see the truth about Oedipus, yet Oedipus in all of his

physical perfection cannot. Through his pride, he blamed others and

pushed them to reveal the truth.



Oedipus sufferings are due to the character flaw of frustration of

acceptance. Toward the end of the play, it is shown how Oedipus learns

the true nature of things - his past is revealed to him and he learns the

oracle was correct. Now Oedipus can see all to clearly what the truth is,

but he desperately does not want to accept his fate. So, in response, he

strikes his eyes - not once, but many times;/ And the blood spattered his

beard, / bursting from his ruined sockets like red hail (EX. 1140). He

blinds himself so that he may not see, but unfortunately this does not help

the problem. He did not want to accept the situation the way he saw it,

and decided instead not to see at all. Oedipus sense of justice allows no

excuse; he punishes himself by self-blinding. The audience is left with

feelings of pity and fear. Oedipus does not curse God and die though, he

does eventually accept his fate, prays for blessings upon his children, and

prepares to endure his own exile. He falls from a high estate, but is

uplifted in moral dignity.



Anger, overconfidence, pride and frustration misguided Oedipus to

think he was in control of his own life. He is ultimately in control of

his own downfall. He is responsible for the consequences of his choices.

Even the greatest of men can crumble to ruins. All human are subject to

suffering and pain.
