When 1th century playwright Henrik Ibsen learned of the way women were being portrayed by his fellow playwright August Strindberg in his play “Miss Julie” in 1888, he became outraged.

The play portrayed the main character, Julie, as a secondary form of humanity that is inferior to men -- just as Strindberg viewed women himself. He believed it was a fact of science that women could never be equal to men no matter how hard they try to.

Ibsen and Strindberg had been previously competing over social issues, but “Miss Julie” pulled Ibsen’s last nerve, says Randolph Carter, professor of drama at the University of South Florida. In retaliation, Ibsen began constructing his own play with his own views about the role of women in society. He was determined to exploit what he thought were errors in Strindberg’s views and ideas, Carter says.

“Ibsen was not going to back down,” Carter says. “There was already bad blood between the two but Ibsen thought August Strindberg crossed over that line, and he was going to trip him up anyway he could.”




Ibsen’s vision finally became a reality in 180 when he completed “Hedda Gabler,” a play in which the main character Hedda Gabler Tesman believes she can become an equal to men and even dominate them. When Strindberg found out about the plot, he became furious because he felt Ibsen was promoting feminism.

“It became a heated seesaw battle,” says Leslie Johnson, director of The Province Theater in Mobile, Ala and drama critic. “One hated the other and angered the other on purpose and then he came back to do the same things he was angry about. It was outrageous; some people even see it as hilarious.”

Despite Ibsen and Strindberg’s disagreements, both of the works were similar in that they both had the same ending result. The circumstances, however, which led to the conclusion differed greatly. Both of the plays and characters in the play reflect the true views of the playwrights.

While the two playwrights do not have much in common besides making a significant impact on the development of modern day naturalism--the showing of things the way they really are in life--,the differences in opinion about a woman’s place in society would forever separate the two playwrights. Yet, those same works have joined them as well.

Throughout the years, many high school and college literature course instructors require students to read or view not one, but both plays alongside each other. Pearl Kennett, professor of drama and literature at Southwest Missouri State University, said she is able to skip over many works that are linked to each other while teaching her classes, but she cannot do it for “Miss Julie“ and “Hedda Gabler.”

“There are some things we can get by with,” Kennett said. “I can assure you that those two plays are never missed and they are always together. It’s just simply impossible to separate the two works.”

In Strindberg’s “Miss Julie,” the play is a battle between a man and woman’s proper place in society in which the man ultimately wins. Julie and her lover Jean consistently struggle for power. Julie is a person of high rank socially since her father is a Count, while her lover Jean is a lowly servant.

“Julie had that higher rank stigma on her,” Carter says. “Right away, Strindberg is placing her high and in dominance so she can fall flat on her face. Despite her family rights, (Strindberg) will make her fall, and Jean will rise. (Strindberg) is going to make sure man would become dominant even in the unlikeliest of situations.”

Sure enough, Julie’s power over Jean dwindles as the play progresses. Both Julie and Jean have dreams of reversing into each other’s role as Julie dreams of lowering herself on the social ladder and Jean dreams of rising up to obtain a high social status.

Before long, Jean gains complete dominance over Julie. Julie evens lowers herself so much that she says she will obey Jean “like a dog” would. Even when Julie realizes that she has shamed her family by declining socially and wants to kill herself because of it, she cannot do it on her own. She must ask Jean to command her to commit suicide, which she does.

She was so strong and then became so weak,” Johnson says. “It’s fascinating how Strindberg brought her from one extreme to the other. She takes her life loses all of her rightful power because of her gender. I can visualize Ibsen’s ears steaming with fury at this. It must have driven him nuts.”

In reprisal, Ibsen created the character Hedda, one who holds on to her beliefs that she can be equal to a man throughout the play. In the first scene, Hedda is very rude to her husband Tesman and his aunt, who have done nothing wrong.

“Right off the bat, Ibsen makes it known that Hedda would be in charge,” Kennett says. “She’s obviously the ruler of the house at that initial point, and she is going to fight to stay that way all the way through.”

Hedda consistently fights against the constraints that her society has placed on women. Hedda believes she should not be subject to men and continues to fight what her environment says. However, when Hedda finally realizes that society will not accept her as she wants, despite her determination, she becomes destructive. She hurts the others around her.

Ibsen creates Hedda as the daughter of a general who raised her as though she were a boy. Throughout the play, it is apparent that Ibsen portrays Hedda as not a typical housewife or mother, Johnson says. This becomes evident when Hedda ignores and denies her pregnancy. The simple thought that she would have to be a typical mother and lose independence disturbs her.

“She wants control and she wants things to be her way,” Johnson says. “Most scholars believe she only married Tesman because he would give her wealth with his possible professorship at a local university. Because Tesman was fairly laid-back, she had easy control over him.”

One man was not enough for Ibsen. He adds another character for Hedda to control --the great scholar Lövberg. As Lövberg’s former lover, Hedda has had control over him since then and has been able to share things with her that he could never tell anyone else. Seeing that the woman currently in love with Lövberg, Mrs. Elvsted, has created a manuscript with the great scholar, which Hedda calls their “child,” Hedda becomes jealous because she feels she is losing control over Lövberg.

“Her jealousy is wicked and cold,” Carter said. “She burns Lövberg’s manuscript instead of giving it back to him when she has that power. But she maintains power over Lövberg when he became depressed and was convinced by Hedda to kill himself. When she gives him the pistol, she shows how great her control is over the man.”

Her power came to an end, though. Judge Brack, the only person who knew that Hedda assisted in Lövberg’s suicide, now has the power to blackmail her, which he threatens to do. The realization that someone else has power over her is unbearable for Hedda. She then commits suicide -- the same result as Julie. In the process, she also takes the life of her baby.

“It’s interesting how he chose to end the play with the same results as his rival,” Kennett says. “But I think Ibsen’s main goal was to show that Hedda still had that control to the end when she took her own life without anyone telling her what to do. It was a choice she made, unlike Mrs. Julie who acted like a puppy she needed Jean to give her directions to do the same thing.”

Although there is no evidence, Kennett believes that Ibsen possibly created Lövberg as a scholar to mock Strindberg and his views. She even thinks Lövberg may be a true representation of how Ibsen would have liked to have seen Strindberg treated in real life.

“I could never imagine what August Strindberg would have thought or said if he had that same assumption I have,” Kennett says. “Strindberg under the control of a woman? In our wildest dreams!”

This chapter focuses mainly on Ishmael Chambers and his past and begins by talking about his experiences of the war. The first paragraph describes how Ishmael became ill during training as a marine rifleman. When Guterson uses the phrase, “Other boys came and went, but he stayed,” this is symbolic of how he felt since he received Hatsue’s letter in the previous chapter, it shows how his life is on hold now, and he is watching others live their lives while he watches his pass him by.

“It was the kind of suffering, after all, he’d yearned for during the last five months, since receiving Hatuse’s letter. It was an easy, sleepy kind of languid fever, and so long as he did not try to move too much or exert himself unnecessarily he could live this way indefinitely.” This shows that he has felt broken since he read the letter. He feels that, although he knew in his heart that Hatsue did not love him, now she put it in such direct terms, that there is no hope for them now, and now he appreciates the opportunity to feel nothing, to keep out the pain that has been eating at him ever since she sent the letter to him.

The chapter then stops talking about Ishmael’s feeling for a while, and concentrates on the war, and the effect of it on the people involved. When the chapter describes the actions of Private Gerald Willis, when he had propped up a dead Japanese boy’s penis and thrown stones at it, and boasted after, Guterson is trying to show the extent that the war had corrupted these people and caused them to become almost animal-like. Guterson repeatedly refers to the people as “boys,” emphasising the fact that they are all young, barely more than children.




Ishmael is said to be “numb to it all, uninterested in drinking and pool and other people, and the more drunk he got the more lucid his mind was and the colder he felt toward everyone.” This shows the extent to which his depression has progressed, he cannot see the point of anything anymore, he does not feel anything for anyone, and furthermore, does not feel anything for himself. “He did not understand the laughter of his companions or their ease or anything else about them.” This shows how detached he is from the rest of the world and his peers. It shows how he is trapped in his own head, and is unable to understand anything about anyone else.

The chapter goes on to tell us how Ishmael attempted to write Hatsue a letter, then ripped it up, along with the one he wrote to his parents. This is another example of how detached he is to everyone else, he has no idea what to say in his letters and therefore decides not to bother with them, despite how much his parents would appreciate it, it is Hatsue that he would like to write to, because he is angry at her, and because of this pent up anger he feels, he cannot write to his parents either.

The chapter then talks about what is going on with the war. It says how one of Ishmael’s peers was writing a letter home and he then tells Ishmael that he “better write one” himself, because it will be his last chance. Ishmael replies that there is no one that he would like to write to. This shows that Ishmael feels totally alone, disorientated. However, the other man convinces him to write one so he goes to get his pad of paper and “composed a letter to Hatsue.” It tells us that Ishmael was watching the other men writing intently, so perhaps only not to stand out, he writes to Hatsue. He tells her that he has to been sent to “kill people that looked like her” and that he “hates” her. He said that he hates Hatsue “with everything in his heart” and “it felt good to write in just that way.” This is a kind of release for Ishmael, this is the only way he can vent out the anger he feels inside. He wrote “I hate you, Hatsue, I hate you always.” However, the fact that he cannot send it and throws it into the sea, shows that he does not hate her, he just feels incredibly angry and betrayed.

Ishmael asks Ernest Testaverde if he would like a drink “before we die.” He says this in a light-hearted manner, almost as is he does not care that this could happen. He feels that he has lost everything already. The chapter basically then describes the men preparing to go off to fight. Once they go off to war, it describes their journey. One man says, “Shit, a goddamn shell. I don’t believe this shit” and all Ishmael replies is, “Me neither” again showing that he is not particularly bothered by dying, showing more so, the extent of his depression. “I thought they blew the shit out of this place… I thought they dusted all the big guns off before we had to go in. Jesus fucking Christ.” All this swearing shows that the other men are panicking about the prospect of dying, but when Ishmael talks about it, there is no panic in his voice, he talks in a totally deadpan tone, showing he does not care. Once he realises that most of the men are dead, Ishmael says “Fucking Japs.” He blames all off this on the Japanese, and we can tell my the way he spits out the words how much he hates the Japanese, but this is not just due to the killings, it is because of Hatuse. For him, everything is the fault of the Japanese and therefore the fault of Hatsue. This is not rational, but he is not in a rational state of mind.

We are told of how Ishmael had to have his arm removed and how he was not fully anaesthetised, how a handsaw was used to do the job, how it was done unevenly so that it would not heal as quickly or as neatly as it would otherwise have done. This shows how terrible the conditions at war were. It was simply a case of getting the job over and done with as quickly as possible. There was no time to make it neat, or for pain relief, you simply got on with it. We are told that Ishmael “would still dream of that, the way his own fingers curled against the wall, how white and distant his arm looked… a piece of trash on the floor.” This shows how he is still haunted by his experiences of the war, and this is ten years on, and we see no signs of him getting over it soon. The very last sentence in the chapter was, “...that fucking goddamn Jap bitch was all he could think of to say.” He started off by saying “the Japs are… The fucking Japs…” but he could not finish the sentence, he could only say “That fucking goddamn Jap bitch” and this shows that deep down he does not hate all Japanese, but only Hatsue. She has hurt him in ways she will never understand. He hates her for what she has done to him.

People Trying to Make a Living

Throughout the past four weeks, we have been examining the labor conditions involved in harvesting coffee. Having never studied this subject, I was shocked by what these laborers endure. Since its discovery, coffee has had a huge impact on cultures throughout the world. Many countries, especially Brazil, immediately adopted coffee as an important crop once it was introduced to them. Although this crop brought prosperity to many of these nations, it also brought massive amounts of slaves in order to harvest it all. Eventually, slavery was abolished, and a new class of people emerged who worked the fields and lived in extreme poverty. These laborers still live in these same conditions today. This extreme poverty is a result of the fact that many migrant workers come to the country because where they came from conditions were much worse. Compared to the United States, these migrant workers have an awful life. This drastic difference shows how much more diverse and advanced the United States’ economy is, and how Brazil must change its economic and immigration policies.

In order to understand this difference in the situations of migrant workers, we must first focus on what these economies are based. Let us look at a large coffee producing, South American country. According to the documentary, Coffee a Sackful of Power, Brazil developed its economy based on coffee. In the early 1600’s, Brazil monopolized on the coffee product by using slave labor to harvest the massive amounts of crops. The result of this focus on coffee was that the entire economy was based nearly completely on one product. Once slavery was abolished, Brazil suddenly found itself with millions of unemployed ex slaves. Brazil lost massive amounts of revenue because now they had to pay laborers to harvest the coffee crop. In order to solve this problem, Brazil began importing cheap foreign labor in order to drive the wages down. This act created a problem because many native Brazilians were and still are forced to work for much lower wages than if there were no immigrants. Because these laborers work form day to day, they cannot obtain any skills; therefore they are stricken to this life of poverty (Valenti). If all of the workers have only this one skill there is no specialization; therefore, the owners can control the prices for a job since laborers have no other options for jobs. Not only is there only one main job for laborers, but also there are constantly migrant workers coming to the country, making it harder for people to get jobs. Also, the increase in population drives the wages down because demand for jobs increases, allowing the owners to set wages at a lower price. This unique situation has forced the migrant workers into horrible living conditions where most of them are forced to live on the plantations with the plantation owners (Dicum and Luttinger 44). After examining this economy we shall see how it drastically differs from that of the United States.

The United States is rather unique compared to the other countries in the world. We are the land of opportunity where anyone can make it. Our economy is probably the most diverse in the world. When it was first founded, America was mainly a place used for its raw materials. The economy was based around various crops which were harvested, refined and shipped to large, wealthy countries. Over many years, the United States became a nation that used raw materials in order to create its own refine products. Today, the U.S. has become so diverse in its economy it can almost control prices on foreign goods. Because there is so much diversity in the economy, there are many job opportunities for migrant workers. Business is growing at such a high rate, these migrant workers from the U.S. are actually in demand; therefore, these migrant workers live in much better conditions than those from Brazil. Due to the nature and diversity of the U.S. economy it differs largely from that of Brazil.




Although we know now that there is a massive difference in the general economies of these two countries today, if we look back at when America had just been discovered, there are many similarities in the two economies. Both of these countries relied on cash crops and cheap labor. In order to make conditions better for migrant workers, Brazil must put better restrictions on immigration and begin to focus on helping its own citizens, much like the U.S. This way, more jobs will open up to the natives and wages will slowly rise. Today, Brazil continues to export the raw material, coffee, to countries like the U.S. According to the documentary Coffee A Sackful of Power, the U.S. is related to Brazil due to the fact that the coffee prices are actually regulated by our market (Avanti). This fact says a whole lot about the general economies of both of our nations because it is actually our country that controls how much these migrant workers make. If were not so concentrated on coffee as a main source for the economy, then we would not be able to control the prices of coffee. If Brazil could control their own prices then the migrant workers would not have to live in such poor conditions.

If they ever want to become a truly successful country, Brazil must further diversify its economy and impose stricter immigration laws. As of right now, countries like the U.S. control the prices of the coffee product, yet they do not grow it. We think that people making five dollars an hour in the United States are living in poverty, but there are people in Brazil who make literally just enough to live from day to day. If Brazil does not do something for its citizens, it will only hurt the country in the long run because their cheap labor drives the price so low it allows the U.S. to basically control their prices. Finally, if laborers continue to live in these conditions, they will lose all faith in the government and there are many problems that could result form there such as a civil war.

Creative self expression is, above all things, an art; it allows a person to translate intangible feelings and emotions�the essence of their being�to something the world can see and, at best, understand. For me, expressing my creativity is executed in an array of behaviors, including singing and the arts, but most predominately, through writing.

My greatest love will always be the manipulation of the written word. As a -year old-child, I would often sit wide-eyed in the hallway with my girlfriend Leila during those precious increments of “free time”, penning elaborate short stories of Barbies, witches, and laughable relatives, our curious minds filled to the brim with elan and youthful enthusiasm. Writing was an outlet, a release�some otherworldly place that I was welcomed into; a place far transcending the mediocrity and unevenness of a seemingly prosaic life.

As a young teenager, I discovered the unbelievable relief that came with writing poetry. When my boyfriend, Alex, relentlessly broke my heart, I turned not to my parents, or deviant behavior, or even to tears, but rather, to the comfort and solace of my Ticonderoga # and crisp white sheets of fluttery heaven. It indeed was quite a prolific period, and looking back on it now, the ordeal itself seemed so inconsequential. But I know intrinsically that without the hours of scrawling raw, overly sentimental lyrics, my broken heart may never have mended.

Freshman English was an artistic category unto itself. On countless occasions we were to write poems, stories, essays, responses. The most memorable of assignments were the adaptation of the George Ella Lyon “I am from” poem and the essay on the Aeniad, where we had to assume the role of one of the characters. Both works were the recipients of meritorious praise, but more importantly, personal growth. The way I could shed my skin and become Queen Dido, embody the sheer quintessence of the heartbroken deity, showed me how much writing could mean.




During my junior year, my affection for creative writing was augmented even further, due to the inspiration and energy of my English teacher, Ms. Karasek. Throughout the year we were given coursework where our literary techniques were displayed in diverse formats. Incontrovertibly my favorite assignment consisted of writing a short story containing elements of Romanticism. I chose to illustrate the dismal and depressing life of a teenage girl who wished to commit suicide a la Edgar Allen Poe. Although my story far exceeded the two-page minimum, (in fact it was upwards of 14,000 words), the excitement and pure unadulterated high that it yielded made every hour worthwhile.

Even as I sit typing this essay, it is not a burden or a chore. It is not some horrible obligation that has been looming in the back of my mind for weeks and haunting me with its ubiquitous and pressing existence. In fact, it is somewhat therapeutic, for it grants me the opportunity to recapitulate just how much creative expression through writing has enhanced my life.

Evaluation

On making my product for young children, I thought it was fairly good but not as good as I would have expected. I had to change quite a few things on my wall hanging, which I have got on my final design idea sheet in my folder. These are; the background for the main piece of fabric, I didn’t have enough time to do the purple patterns on there. I also changed my snakes, I was going to do them all embroidered but them decided I’d leave some blank (due to time shortages again) and do some using transfer paper. This didn’t come out as well as I’d of expected and personally prefer the embroidered snakes on the pockets of my wall hanging. They are more effective and look a lot nicer especially for the children that may play on or with my wall hanging. The silk on the embroidered snakes shines a bit as to intrigue children more.

The educational part of my wall hanging is the snakes and also how many pockets there are on the wall hanging so the children can count and look at the colours, etc.

Stitching the pockets on was very tricky as the wall hanging was very big (1 metre by 1 metre) to get under the small sewing machine. A few of my pockets are a bit wonky although I did try and amend these problems by unpicking and hand stitching. Also whilst doing the embroidery on the pockets and also using the transfer paper I used mass manufacture which proved to be a quicker method rather than doing it all one at a time.




If I had more time to make my wall hanging then I would of completed it by sewing the top bit where I have left a gap and put in some doweling. Also, I would have sewn along in between the pockets to quilt it. I have researched this on the internet and have printed this off as well so I had some information on it when I came to do it.

If I’d have known some problems were going to crop up I would have changed the following; pocket shape-the curved shape at the bottom is far to difficult when adding the lining and stitching to the main background piece, (I would have changed this shape to a square). I would have made my wall hanging smaller as it may have got finished that way and also would have been a lot more practical on the machine! Also, I would have liked to get thicker wadding inside the wall hanging then it could have been used as a play mat easily without any bumps and then it would have been safer for the child/children using my product.

The use of colours I used I thought were quite good and colourful for the child/children to look at. They are bold and go together well and stand out boldly. The snake emblem on each pocket is quite interesting to look at when seen in detail as a lot of work has been put into it. The transferred pockets are also interesting as they are different and feel funny.

All of these phenomena are important. But they are less fundamentally important than the basic nature of organizations as living social organisms. This critically important reality must be where any intervention starts. When this occurs, the intervention has a chance of working. To enable these managers must be able to combine their knowledge of the above systems with response ability. Determining where an organization has been, where it is currently, and where it is primarily poised to go next is critically important before any change is attempted. Indeed, what managers must do is discover the unique patterns and processes - and then work to influence them in a manner that helps the organization to help itself function more efficiently and effectively. The states consolidated school districts into larger units with common procedures. In 140, there were over one-hundred and seventeen thousand school districts in the United States, but by 10, the number had decreased to just over fifteen thousand. “States also became much more responsible for financing education as they helped fund the rapid expansion of state postsecondary institutions after World War II” (Powell). Occasionally states also supported efforts to equalize local school district expenditures by using state fund and state laws to ensure more equitable per pupil expenditures regardless of the wealth or poverty of the individual districts. Racial factors also came into play as inter-racial school became more common. However, “recently the Supreme Court has debated whether or not minorities should receive favor to be accepted into universities” (The Associated Press). Ethnical issues have been a confusion among America’s government for quite some, but until the Supreme Court settles the battle, it will always be an isssue.

During the 180s and 10s, virtually all states have given exceptional attention to their role in raising education standards. A great deal of the initiative for greater state involvement in education came from the publication of a report by a federal commission in 18 that indicated low academic achievement in American schools. Many parents, educations, and government officials believed that only a concerted, centralized reform effort could overcome these apparent shortcomings of American education.

In summary, America’s treasure continues to change as each day passes. Federal and state governments will always have their input on what will and will not be taught in education. Afterwards Analysis

The poem Afterwards by Thomas Hardy consists of five stanzas, each one a quatrain. Hardy is anticipating his own death and questioning how he will be remembered. The use of nature, not in the abstract sense but in his own feelings towards it and the sensitivity of his observations of nature contrasts his mortality. He wants to be remembered as a man who “used to notice such things”

Hardy identifies himself to innocent creatures, because they like him are doomed to death. The nightjar bird known in Hardy’s local area as the dewfall-hawk makes a great deal of noise when it is still, yet is silent and fast when flying. Hardy compares his poetry to the strange noises the bird makes when it is still and his life to the bird in flight, ending both quickly and unnoticed. The “eyelid’s soundless blink” emphasises the silence of the “dewfall-hawk” during flight and also reminds readers of the senses sight and sound, that is essential to observe nature. Hardy feels out of place with his wild ideas in his structured environment like a hedgehog that “travels furtively over the lawn”. A hedgehog is a wild animal and also seems out of place when it is crossing the lawn - an area that man has recultivated.




The main contrast in the poem is between the vivid life of nature and the energy of Hardy as he observes this, against the dull grey lives of the people he lives among. He is not concerned with them so they appear far less clear than the small creatures he notices and appreciates. Hardy’s observations of nature are also unpretentious and accurate. The modesty in describing “full starred heavens” and “glad green leaves” increases the “mysteries” of these seemingly ordinary things, as anyone can observe them but only he seems to be able to appreciate their strange beauty.

“Bells of quittance” in the final stanza links the theme of Hardy’s anticipated death that was first established in the first stanza. Repetition of the bells initial “outrollings” which “cuts a pause” after a “crossing breeze” illustrates how the spirit of his poetry is passed on and continues like the chiming of the bells, despite the slight pauses caused by the death of individuals.

The first things that come to my mind during this brainstorm are money and power.

For many decades countries and organizations have strived to obtain stability and peace around the world. Of course not, they do it because they get something in return. Primarily this return would be money or power.




Take the European Union for example. The EU claims that they want to help the third-world nations in their efforts to stabilize their economies. Currently the seventy countries in Africa are getting financial assistance from the European Development Fund, (The Lom� Convention). It is a very generous gesture but if the European Union really is interested in helping the third-world, why do they have a tariff barrier preventing these countries from having a chance of exporting goods to the EU for a competitive price. Agriculture especially can be produced much cheaper in the third world than any place in the EU, but because of the tariff barrier the goods have become even more expensive than EU goods. This only shows that the European Union is afraid of losing power. They will help, but with limitations to ensure their own protection.

This does not mean that each society or individual concentrates on money or power when they fight to change the world. Of course there are many different issues that societies/individuals are fighting for such as equal rights, poverty, freedom of expression, peace, better environment etc. In small societies around the world, people are actually working to help others without expecting something in return. At least money and power are not their immediate goals.

Mission for Turkey.

The first think to enter my mind is the business environment. There are a lot of unexploited opportunities for Turkish Business, in my opinion.

In Denmark, and probably also in many other European countries, Turkey is a total neglected market for doing business. When companies think about expanding they do not see Turkey as a realistic opportunity to invest in. The reason for this is because business people in European countries are not educated or simply uninterested in Turkey. They only see a Muslim represented nation juggling their position within the European Union with a poor record in human rights issues. Of course one must not overlook the Economic issue, especially the constant difficulties with inflation.

I think a practical mission for Turkey would be to position Istanbul as the center for all world business, or at least the center of European Business. Geographically Istanbul is a prime location. It is a westernized society, which is very dynamic and also one of the most beautiful places in the world. Turkey has the advantage of having a vast space of land with a large and very young population.

The strategy of Turkey would first of all involve making the world aware that Turkey could be a profitable place to invest. Secondly, Turkey could be marketed in such a way that business people around the world would change their negative thoughts about Turkey. The director has displayed the impression that the replicants are the life-threatening, evil beings or “skin jobs” that have only one use and that is to serve the humans. Deckard is arrested in the beginning of the film as it was the only way to acquire his help for Bryant (the boss) but refuses the request at first as he is ‘retired’ from his duties. There are many times that the viewers begin to wonder whether Deckard is a replicant because when looking at him, he epitomises darkness as he is usually seen surrounded in a corrupt decayed world. It is supposed to be the replicants that display such features giving the audience another thought whether the characters are really who they portray themselves.

A replicant is a clone who has no mother or father, history or a sense of belonging. A memory of another human being is copied into the replicants brain and has a false history that it believes it is their own. The replicants seen on this film carry certain photos of their past lives and Deckard is also seen to have a collection of photos. He also refuses to take the test given to the replicants when asked by Rachel “have you taken the test yourself?”. This all adds up to the question first asked at the begging of the film, who is right and who is wrong?




Roy Batty, the ring leader of the ‘band of bandits’ epitomises the perfect man as he is muscular, super intelligent and shows physical superiority. He is a replicant yet shows sign that he has many human characteristics and qualities that many humans have seem to have lost. His main purpose in his escapade is to gain more life, and during the process he shows true love for Priss (his lover and also a replicant), illustrates what it is like to live in fear as he becomes the hunter near the end of the movie, and he redeems himself by saving Deckard before he gives up and dies a death similar to Christ. Roy Batty has changed his character around from being the ruthless and merciful slave to a God like being that represents freedom, light and hope. Another major concept to contemplate over.
