Analyses of ‘On Loneliness” by Michelle Stewart.

Michelle Stewart wrote the poem ‘On Loneliness’ to make the statement that life is boring and pointless and that god has plans for us, but why does he leave us on or own. This person is obviously depressed and the main theme is loneliness and isolation.

We get the impression that this person is all alone with no-one to love and communicate with and the mood is very negative and depressing for the person. The mood doesn’t change much in the poem and the persons emotional problems are seen quite clearly through the eyes of the reader. Stewart tries to make the reader feel sadness for the person and sympathy. Being handicapped, Stewart is seen as different and she was probably made fun of and bullied throughout her childhood days. This could have led to her depression in life.

The title reinforces the statement that Stewart was lonely and depressed with no-one to love and listen to. She cant tell anyone what is wrong because there is no-one to talk to. “to the cross and back” signifies that she followed the cross to Christianity but found no satisfaction in gods answers so she turned away from Christianity. The two stanzas both emphasize the same point about her disability and loneliness. Stewart used few words in each line to make the reader really stop and think about each line as it comes. This makes the reader really get to know the disabled Stewart and learn a lot about her from just a short poem. The emotive language has an effect on the reader in a sense that we feel sympathetic for her and ,by the way the poem was written, we can understand what she’s going through and we can almost put ourselves in her shoes and feel the pain she is feeling.

Write my paper for me!!!

The impact of the poem by Michelle Stewart can relate to a lot of people in our society who know what she is going through and say and say “hey I know how she feels, I am or was like that”. A lot of people are used to this behavior and suffer the same trauma as Michelle Stewart. This poem arouses an emotional response to the reader because nearly everyone can relate to it because everyone knows how it feels to be picked on and singled out from others. I thought this poem was an excellent poem which can be discussed in a lot of detail by the way the Stewart wrote it. It makes us think about it more and feel her sympathy.
