The automobile is a prominent symbol of American culture. To most Americans a car is one of the most important things in their lives and serves as more than just transportation. Sometimes you can tell a lot about a person by their car. It can symbolize social status, life style, personality and many other things. To many Americans the car is a hobby; to drive around, improve and maintain, or just to own.

To the brothers in this story, Lyman and Henry Jr., their car was all those things and more. The car was something so special it couldn’t be explained. When they saw it for the first time they just knew they had to buy it. To them it was like a dream. They both came from a poverty stricken Indian reservation in North Dakota and this was their ticket out. One major thing the car represented right from the beginning was trust. The way the just decided to go in on the cost of the car without thinking twice represents unconditional trust amongst the two brothers. Another thing the car represents is absolute freedom. They obviously could get around before because they bought the car in Canada, but when they had a car of their own there was nothing stopping them. They just took off without a care. The car then represented all of the memories they shared on their road trip, such as taking the hitchhiker girl to her home in Alaska. They stayed there all summer with no original plans to go there at all.

When Henry went to the army the meaning of the car changed for Lyman.

He didn’t use it the entire time his brother was away. This is because the car wasn’t his unless it was theirs. Lyman didn’t even consider the option of just using it even once. He just waited for Henry Jr. to come home. This shows the car represented brotherhood. It is not often to see such loyalty amongst even the best of friends, but brothers are more than friends. As they say, blood is thicker than water.

The narrative writing prompts that I have completed were composed for practice to improve my writing. First, I had to write on the topics that I was given. Then, by completing the prompts, I received scores to find out where my problem areas were. Now I am going to analyze these areas and find methods I can use to improve my skills in them. Subsequently, I am enhancing my writing. I have chosen to analyze three weak areas of my writing and give techniques that I can use to improve my writing. On each prompt, there were five categories that I was scored in focus, content, organization, style, and conventions. Each of these areas is an essential part of writing. They enable the essay to be read easily, and they help the reader to better understand the concept of the writing. The three main categories I found that I needed to improve in were content, style, and organization. I determined these weak areas by adding my scores together in each category from each of the five essays, and the sections with the lowest scores were the ones that I chose to evaluate. The first area I need to improve is content.

Content is the presence of ideas developed through facts, examples, anecdotes, details, opinions, statistics, reasons, and explanations. Content is an imperative part of writing, and I need to improve my proficiency in this category. After reviewing each of the five narrative essays, I realized that if I did not enjoy or had problems writing about the topic of the prompt I lacked sufficient content. I found this to be true because the writings that I received all of the possible points for content were essays that I enjoyed writing. Adding all of my scores together for this category, I received a total of seventeen points out of the possible twenty. This score conveys to me that I did not always show substantial, specific, or illustrative content that demonstrated strong development and sophisticated ideas. There are a couple solutions that can help me overcome this problem. One solution is to connect the topic with a personal experience. When I can relate the topic I must write about to an experience that has happened in my life, I find that it is much easier for me to think of and convey ideas. For example, the first writing prompt I finished this year had a topic of fate. I chose to write how it was my fate to become a dancer. I am very passionate about dancing, and the whole experience of me becoming a dancer could be connected with fate. Therefore, it was much easier for me to write about this theme when I could associate it with an actual event in my life. Subsequently, I did not lack content and received an excellent score. Another solution is to make the essay fictional. I did not try this approach to writing in the prompts that I have finished. I like to write fictional stories, and I believe that writing an entertaining paper would make the task more enjoyable. Having the prompt be similar to a story would assist me in including high-quality content because I can write more fluently when I am writing a story. For instance, one prompt topic that I received was to describe a storm and its effects on me. I could have made myself into an animal or an object. Therefore, I could twist the story and make the topic more pleasurable to write about. For example, I could have pretended I was an apple tree. I would have described the storm from the perspective of an apple tree. The effects would be easier to write because I could explain how the wind blew so hard that I was leaning over, and my apples were flying in the air. I believe that this would have aided me in including content because I could easily write about my experiences in a fictional sense. Although I do need to work on adding content to my writing, the second area that I need to improve is style.

Style is the choice, use, and arrangement of words and sentence structure that creates tone and voice. I need to improve my skills in this vital element of writing. As I examined each of my individual writings, I noticed that if I had problems connecting the prompt topic with my life, I had a troublesome time incorporating style into my writing. I came to this conclusion by reviewing all of my writings and noticing the prompts that I received all of the possible points for style were ones that I could easily connect with my life. I observed that it was especially easy for me to integrate style into my writing when I was passionate about the topic as well. I received a sum of seventeen points out of the possible twenty, after totaling all of my scores for this area. This score informs me that I did not continually show a precise and illustrative use of a variety of words and sentence structures to create consistent writer’s voice and tone appropriate to the audience. There are a few methods that I think I can use to improve my scores in the category of style. One way to do this is to brainstorm experiences in my life that could possibly connect with the topic before I start to write. I feel that this will really help me to incorporate style into my writing because I can select the experience that I can best relate to the topic and the one that I am most passionate about. For example, the obstacle writingabout my eating disorderseemed effortless to write. I am extremely passionate about the topic I chose as my obstacle, and the words just flowed from my mind onto the paper when I was writing about it. My style involuntarily incorporated itself into my writing. Subsequently, if I can always select an experience that I am passionate about and can connect to the topic I am given, I am more likely to have better style. Another way to improve my scores in the area of style is to make my essay into a fictional story. I believe that this would aid in adding style to my writing because when I invent an anecdote my writing flows more freely. Therefore, my style would most likely appear effortlessly as I wrote, and I would not have to toil exceedingly hard to place it in the writing. I find that natural style in writing is better than style that has to be intentionally added. I could have done this in one prompt that I had difficulty writing. It was the lesson prompt. I was supposed to describe a lesson that I learned in school and write about what it taught me. I feel that if I would have made the writing into a fictional story, instead of trying to connect it with a recent lesson I learned, I could have scored higher in the style category. I could have written a story about how I was a small girl, and I learned that running in the halls was wrong and dangerous. I could have incorporated an incident of how I was running in the corridor and broke my arm. This would have made the writing more fun and easier to write. And when I can write easily, my style seems to effortlessly flow out from inside of me onto the paper. Therefore, I could have improved my style and received a better score for the area. Style is important in writing, but I also need to enhance my skills in the category of organization.

Organization is the order developed and sustained within and across paragraphs using transitional devices and introductions as well as conclusions. This is an essential part of writing. Organization helps writing to flow smoothly, which aides in reading. Adding together all of my scores for this area, I received a total of eighteen points out of the possible twenty. My score in this category shows me that I did not continually illustrate sophisticated arrangement of content, and that I did not always have evident or subtle transitions. As I reviewed each of my essays, I noticed that if I was not partial to the topic of the essay, I had poor organization. However, I believe that I need to work on the category because I do not feel as confident in this area as I do in the others. I have found that there are various techniques that I can use to improve my organization, and I have chosen two that correspond with what I believe I need to work on. One technique is to write stronger transition sentences. I realize that transition sentences are a key ingredient to an outstanding essay because they help the reader to shift into the next idea smoothly, instead of coming to an abrupt stop with one thought and then suddenly moving on to another. Enhancing my skills in writing stronger transitional sentences would make my writing more flowing and smooth. One way I can improve my transitions is to make the last word of my transition sentence the first word in the initial sentence of my next paragraph. Personally, I really like this suggestion, and I feel that it would truly help strengthen my transitions. As I reviewed my essays, I found one transition in my writing prompt on the topic of describing a storm that would really be strong if I used this technique. The last sentence of one paragraph was As I lay, I could hear the storm surging outside. The first sentence of the next paragraph was The rain began to turn to hail as it fell from the sky. If I were to use the technique I described I would keep the last sentence of the paragraph the same and add the word outside to the beginning of the next sentence. Thus the transition would read as follows As I lay, I could hear the storm surging outside. (Next paragraph) Outside, the rain began to turn to hail as it fell from the sky. I feel that I would have had a stronger transition by doing this. I also like how the sentences read smoothly and connect with one another. Thus, this technique would thoroughly aid in my transitions, giving me better organization. Another way to improve my organization is to do more specific and in-depth prewriting. I notice, as I look back on my writings, that I used more detail in the prewriting outlines that I did for the topics I enjoyed writing about than the ones that I did not. I received excellent scores on the essays that I did better prewriting on. Therefore, I believe that if I give more details in my outlines before I actually start writing the prompt I can improve my organization immensely. For example, on the writing about a memorable event in my life I chose to write about the day that I had surgery on my wisdom teeth. As I glanced over my prewriting, I noticed that I mapped out exactly what I was going to write and put all of the day’s events in their respectable order. However, when I looked at the prewriting for the prompt on the lesson that I learned in school, I found that I just superficially outlined the idea of my essay. I find that it is much easier for me to write when I have a solid foundation to start with. Subsequently, I can make the foundation of my writing my in-depth outline. With both of these techniques, I feel that I can improve my writing.

To improve my writing, I have completed and analyzed the narrative writing prompts that I composed for practice. I found that not constantly showing considerable, detailed, or descriptive content that displays strong development and sophisticated ideas caused me to lose points in the content category. When I write in the future I am going to try to connect the topic with a personal experience or make the essay fictional. Not always showing an exact and illustrative use of an array of words and sentence structures producing regular writer’s voice and tone suitable to the audience caused my score in the category of style to go down. There are two ways that I plan on raising my score in the style area. One way is to come up with occurrences in my life that could possibly relate to the topic I need to write on, before I start to write. Another way is to make my paper into an imaginary story. Finally, I found that not continually demonstrating sophisticated order of content and not always having obvious or ingenious transitions lowered my score in the organization area. There are two strategies I am going to use to improve my organization. One is to write stronger transition sentences, by making the last word of my transition sentence the first word in the first sentence of my next paragraph. The second strategy is to make my prewriting outlines mores explicit and thorough. After examining each of my weak categories of writing and finding ways to enhance my skills in them, I believe that I have a strong grasp on what I have to do to improve my writing. Since I now have specific ways to improve my writing, I can put them to use in the future. These strategies will not only help me with writing impending prompts, but they will also aid me in all of my writing research papers, biographies, reports, essays, etc. Thus, I can use these methods of improving my writing all throughout my life.

Education over the years has evolved into a magnificent display of America’s pride and joy. Citizens of America pride themselves in knowing children are educated for free from elementary through high school. As formal education developed, the outlook of teaching has been altered through technology and other programs. Enrollment in adult programs and other non-school activities have rapidly increased as the federal and state governments have become more involved to improve areas of schooling.

“Nowadays, formal education serves a greater percentage of the U.S. population than at any time in history and has also assumed many of the responsibilities formerly reserved for family, religion, and social organizations” (Powell). “Most Americans expect schools to provide children with skills, values, and behaviors that will help them become responsible citizens, contribute to social stability in the country and increase American economic productivity” (Benedick). Federal government also requires schools to correct social inequality among students of different racial, ethnic, social, or economic backgrounds.

Although the objectives assumed by formal education increased dramatically during the twentieth century, the format and techniques of American schooling have remained, for the most part, quite stable and resistant to change (Oglesby). Despite occasional experiments such as the introduction of moveable rather than fixed desks, team teacher, and upgraded courses, the practice of teaching and the process of learning in the 100s closely resembled that of today. Students took courses; classes consisted of groups of twenty to thirty students with a teacher at the front of the classroom; instruction proceed by lecture, demonstration, discussion, or silent work at a desk; and teachers often assigned homework for the students to complete after class.

However, some aspects of teaching have changed. “The influence of modern psychology and of education reformers such as John Dewey caused schools to become less formal, more relaxed, and somewhat more centered on the individiual child rather than on the institution or the society” (Powell). School facilities improved for most students, except perhaps in the inner cities. More money is spent on education; resulting in both a general upgrading of teacher salaries and improvements in programs that focus on specifies kinds of students, such as special education. “Expenditures on students in public elementary and secondary schools increased from $61 per pupil in 140 (inflation adjusted) to $556 per pupil in 10” (Ravitch).

Many technological innovations of the twentieth century have promised breakthroughs in the methods and effectiveness of teaching. Some of the most promising innovations included filmstrips and motion pictures, teaching machines, and programmed instruction. Yet the promise generated by much of this new technology proved misleading, and most changes in teaching methods became nothing more than short-lived fads.

Two very different technologies; however, may have far greater effects on educational practice than their predecessors. Development in computer and communications technology holds out hope that all students will connect with more information and more people than ever before, and that the learning might become more individualized. Another promising technological advance is in biochemistry and genetic engineering (Ravitch). Innovations in these fields suggest that certain barriers to learning, such as short attention spans or faulty memories, might one day be reduced by means other than the traditional reliance on sheer effort alone. For example, medical researchers conduct studies on the brain and central nervous system in hopes of discovering ways to enhance memory and intelligence.

United States institutions through education are increasingly offering more schooling opportunities to people both much younger and much older than the traditional school-age population. For example, “the percentage of three-year-olds and four-year-olds enrolled in preschools increased from fifteen percent in 171 to thirty-four percent in 18; a rise such as this among early schooling parallels depends on single-parent households and households in which both parents have careers” (Powell). Programs specializing in adult programs has also had increased enrollment, which are usually defined as part time study not directed toward a degree. Adult education programs vary substantially. Millions of adults enroll in such programs for job-related reasons, often because companies provide incentives for employees to upgrade skills through training. “Numerous adults also attend school to pursue personal interests and hobbies” (Benedick). Growing numbers of older and relatively affluent people has created a new market for travel, reading, and other kinds of self-development.

“Many institutions of higher education have developed part-time, evening, and summer programs to tap the non-traditional adult market more aggressively” (Powell).

Education occurs not only in schools and colleges but also in many other settings, directly and indirectly, intentionally and unintentionally. “Since the 180s, education policymakers and reformers have given greater attention and funding to improve the quality of education in non-school settings” (Oglesby). For example, educations view the family as perhaps the most powerful educational force, and schools have increased education programs designed specifically for parents. Museums have also given greater attention to their instructional role, and many museums with an educational purpose have been created specifically for children. During the 160s, the pioneering work of the Children’s Television Workshop, which created “Sesame Street”, was an early demonstration of how television could advance rather than retard educational values. “The proportion of government funds spent on education in non-school setting is likely to continue to increase as the years go by” (Oglesby).

Over the years, federal government has increasingly become more involved in American education. Although educational authority resides ultimately with the states, the federal government has long encouraged and assisted specific educational activities that it considers to be in the national interest. Federal government activities in the field of education have further centralized American schooling. “The Smith-Hughes Act of 117, for example, helped create vocational programs in high schools, and the GI Bill of 144 was the first important federal effort to provide financial aid for military veterans to attend college” (Oglesby). In addition, federal civil rights laws require all schools and college to conform to national standards of educational equality.

“Commitments that the federal governments have pursued to improve and finance are public schools that expanded enormously when Congress passed the National Defense Education Act of 158 and the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 164” (Oglesby). In these two landmark statutes, Congress addressed for the first time such broad problems as expanding educational opportunity for poor children and improving instruction in neglected subjects, such as science, mathematics, and foreign languages. Equally important, these laws strengthened many large universities by providing federal funds for research; they also supported students attending private colleges by providing federal support for financial aid. “Since this assistance came from federal sources rather than from state or local governments, it increased centralized control of American education” (Oglesby).

Federal involvement in schools since the 180s has been expressed less by legislation providing money for new programs than by government reports and proclamations that schools were performing insufficiently. “A Nation at Risk and many subsequent federal reports and studies on the condition of schooling sparked a vigorous school reform effort at local and state levels” (Ravitch). However, aside from espousing ambitious national education goals, the federal government has been far less active in shaping education legislation during the 180s and the 10s than it had been in the 160s and 170s.

While federal government has steadily become more involved with education, states still assumed a more active regulatory role. The states consolidated school districts into larger units with common procedures. In 140, there were over one-hundred and seventeen thousand school districts in the United States, but by 10, the number had decreased to just over fifteen thousand. “States also became much more responsible for financing education as they helped fund the rapid expansion of state postsecondary institutions after World War II” (Powell). Occasionally states also supported efforts to equalize local school district expenditures by using state fund and state laws to ensure more equitable per pupil expenditures regardless of the wealth or poverty of the individual districts. Racial factors also came into play as inter-racial school became more common. However, “recently the Supreme Court has debated whether or not minorities should receive favor to be accepted into universities” (The Associated Press). Ethnical issues have been a confusion among America’s government for quite some, but until the Supreme Court settles the battle, it will always be an isssue.

During the 180s and 10s, virtually all states have given exceptional attention to their role in raising education standards. A great deal of the initiative for greater state involvement in education came from the publication of a report by a federal commission in 18 that indicated low academic achievement in American schools. Many parents, educations, and government officials believed that only a concerted, centralized reform effort could overcome these apparent shortcomings of American education.

In summary, America’s treasure continues to change as each day passes. Federal and state governments will always have their input on what will and will not be taught in education. As modernization of technology and customs are continuously being updated, requirements and standards are modernized as well. Still, will one’s values be compromised for the government’s opinion?

An important historic character was born on January 6, 1880. His name was Douglas MacArthur. He was the son of Lt. General Arthur MacArthur, who won the Civil War. The start of his career was when he graduated college with the highest honors from West Point University in 10.

During WW1 MacArthur lead the 4 division (also known as the Rainbow) of the allied Expeditionary Force in France. After the war MacArthur became superintendent of West Point. In January of 10 he was promoted to full 4-star general and named the U.S. Armys Chief of Staff. He retired from the army in 17 and became the president of the Philippines. In 141 Mac Arthur was recalled to active duty.

In 14 he became Supreme Allied Commander, and was awarded the Medal of Honor. In 145 he became a five-star General. In 150, at the beginning of the Korean War, he was awarded the Supreme United Nations Leader, and became governor. In 151 Harry S. Truman relieved him from his command. Since MacArthur was mad at Truman MacArthur ran against him for president in 15 but didn’t make it. His last 1 years was spent in New York speaking out on political issues. General Douglas MacArthur died at Walter Reed Army Hospital on April 14, 164. He was 84 years old. Before burying him in Norfolk, Virginia, MacArthur’s body lay in state in New York City so that people could pay tribute to him.

This is Douglas MacArthur’s Thayer Award Speech.

The address by General of the Army Douglas MacArthur

to the cadets of the U.S. Military Academy in accepting the

Sylvanus Thayer Award on 1 May 16 is a memorable

tribute to the ideals that inspired that great American soldier.

For as long as other Americans serve their country as courageously

and honorably as he did, General MacArthurs words will live on.

I think Halloween should be celebrated. Because most children are able to dress up in the costumes they choose and have fun collecting candy. The main reason why Halloween is celebrated is because the kids have a blast dressing up and receiving candy for their wonderful costumes. Most adults think else wise. In another way it shouldn’t be celebrated because a few people like to mess with the candy, which makes it difficult to know what is in it and if you should eat it. If you were to take this holiday away most people would have nothing to do, but sit around and bored. Most people wouldn’t be spending time with their kids. Most kids wouldn’t know how it feels to go around collecting candy or dress up in funny/scary costume. Most families can’t even afford a costume for their child. Halloween is the only holiday that the parents dress up their kids and get compliments about their children look. Most parents appreciate the compliments and think about how to make that child look even better next year. When kids go trick or treating they have to beware of bag snatchers that try to take their candy from them. They would have to consider wearing bright colors, so that a car won’t hit them. Also parents might want to keep a tab of what houses that they got the candy from just in case they find something unusual. That makes it easier for them because they can report that person to the police and that person will get in trouble.

Summer of my German soldier is a very captivating story and entertaining story. The book is very interesting and attention getting. The movie that is based off the book is also interesting but not as good as the book. If we compare the two they reveal they’re many differences in style, context, feeling, and emotion but at the same time, they reveal their differences. Through this piece of writing, I hope to show the similarities and differences between the two works of art.

Patty, the main character in both the movie and the book is very multi dimensional person. Meaning that she has many sides to her. For example, she has a side that always loves to lie to people, but she has a side that always wants to help and be compassionate to everyone that is around her. In both the book and the movie Patty is surrounded by people that she loves and people love her. In the movie and the book, there are also some people that do not love her. The people that do not love her still do have her love even though she does not have there’s. Through out both the book and the movie I began to understand that there are the people that make her feel that she is valued and some that don’t. At dictionary.com, the definition of value is Worth in usefulness or importance to the possessor. Both the movie and the book showed how people valued Patty but the book showed it differently then the movie did.

When I started reading the book, I met and very nice character by the name of Ruth. Ruth in both the book and the movie is Ruth’s family’s housekeeper. She does many things in the house for the family. As the book and the movie move along, I began to understand Patty and Ruth’s relationship. I understood that they are very close and tight while they also share everything with each other. Ruth shows Patty that she really cares about her and that Patty is of something of value to her. Ruth is always interested in Patty and her life. In the book, it was conved to me that she was involved in every aspect of Patty’s life.

Every day before Patty left for her days activities she always had a nice conversation with her and made her breakfast, which Patty came to love, and like a lot. This is how the book showed how Ruth valued Patty. The movie shows how Ruth valued Patty in a different way. The movie showed that Ruth did value Patty but in a different way then the book did. The movie showed Patty always eating Ruth’s breakfast that she cooked but it did not show them always having a conversation together. It only showed them talking briefly and not sharing in depth conversations as it did in the book.

Patty did not only come close to Ruth but she also met an older man named Anton. Anton was a German who was caught by the United States and brought back to the US as a POW (Prisoner of War). When he first got to Patty’s home town he was taken to a prisoner camp near the town. Then one day all the POW’s including Anton came in to Patty’s family store to buy some straw hats. Patty was in there and Anton caught her eye and attention. From there many things happened such as Anton escaping from the POW camp and Patty providing him with a hideout. This was all shown and written in the same way. The only difference from the book to the movie is that Anton shows and expresses less expression then the books expresses through the writing. For example, when Patty and Anton are in the hideout talking in the book their conversations seem more personal and deeper in thought while in the movie they seem like they have a conversation just to have one.

Not only does Ruth and Anton show that Patty is valued but also her grandparents show that she is valued. In both the book and the movie the take her in at the end of each and care for her and nurture her all they can.

At the same time, Patty has people that love her and people that claim to love her. One person that has a large part in her life is her father. Patty’s father is one of the characters that claims to love her but does not show it nor make her feel like she is loved by him. Her father throughout the book and movie gets mad at her in deals with her making him mad in different ways depending if it was the move or the book. In the movie, her father just yells at her and verbal abuses her while in the movie he beats her with his belt.

Overall, the entire entire book and the movie are two very good works of art. They captivated my mind and entertain it at the same time. They both show what it is like to be valued and what it is like not to be valued. Both the book and the movie also show how to value people in real life. Even though they are based of the same plot line, they share many differences, which makes them so unique.

Discuss the function of the inspector in the play as a whole

An Inspector Calls was written by J.B Priestly. This play intertwines the life of a pretty young woman who was driven to suicide by a well known respectable family. But it has a deeper more sinister meaning and morale to the story. That mankind has to learn from mistakes or it will have to repay them in blood and anguish. The inspector’s role in the play is more than being a police officer, but being with God and teaching mankind a lesson. The play is set in 11; it was performed and written in 145. Priestly shows the inspectors important role by the phrases he uses. He portrays the faults of mankind and the consequences of those blunders that the audience had to face some thirty years earlier.

Before the inspector arrives the mood is light hearted, jovial and happy. Birling’s speeches before the inspector has arrived are very ignorant, and he doesn’t see what’s in front of him and what could happen to him if he doesn’t smarten up. As the inspector’s arrival draws closer Birling’s talking to Gerald about how he could get a knight hood, he continues by saying. “So long as we behave our selves, don’t get into the police or start a scandal”. But he doesn’t consider what his words could bring about. Also its quiet a slap in the face when he says this and an inspector arrives, what a coincidence as he makes that comment a police officer arrives. The inspector is due any moment while Birling is making a speech about community and how you have to look after number one he says “But the way some of these cranks talk and write now, you’d think everybody has to look after everybody else, as if we were all mixed up together like bees in a hive- community and all that nonsense”, these comments are juxtaposed with the arrival of the inspector at the door, its setting him up to be knocked down. The inspector arrives to challenge Birling’s capitalist. As Birling says these words he doesn’t realise that this is true, and it’s happening to him. “Bees in a hive”, this comment shows how Birling tries to relate humans with bees, but the main difference is that bees all have equal status and were they help each other in a community whereas humans have a community, were we don’t help each other, and we don’t look after each other and take responsibilities, but Birling doesn’t like this idea, he looks after number one and has no care for lower people in different classes. When Edna says an inspector has called, Birling has gone on the defensive. He says in a sharp monosyllabic way. ”An inspector what kind of inspector.” He sounds almost scandalised, abused. So the name of the inspector has made Birling go on the defensive. We the audience don’t trust Birling because of his ignorant comments about the war and the Titanic being unsinkable. The inspector then arrives and his very presence lets us trust him. His way of speaking. His weight in his words slows the pace down to what he likes. He demonstrates this ability to hold the play to his own pace in many parts of the play.

The inspector doesn’t rabble on like the rest of them he stays calm and cool. He controls the pace of the play with this calmness and authority he has over the Birling family. When the pace starts to speed up with someone trying to give a speech or have an argument, he stops them with his authoritative voice.

He slows the play down and builds a lot of tension but not only that but he inspires a sense of mystery as to whom this person is and what is his function; is it to teach the Birlings a lesson, send them to jail, as he is an inspector or is he? It turns out later that he isn’t a police officer but a ghost like his name “Goole” which means ghost or spirit. Is he something other than that? Could he be a messenger from God giving a message not only to them but to everyone to not forget what responsibilities we hold in our daily life? This brings up Questions about Priestly. Is Priestly a messenger of God, a time traveller, or a mystical being? Does he have an insight into the world that we don’t? Or is he just smart enough not to let status and ignorance change his ways or go to his head. When the inspector starts to question Birling, he goes on the back foot straight away; he denies knowing the girl at first. But when he sees the picture he can’t deny it anymore.

But the inspector has a chance to show Gerald and Eric the photo but he doesn’t this slows the pace down to what he likes. This is very odd to the Audience as they expect the truth to come out straight away but the inspector plays it cool buys some time, slows the pace of the play down to make the audience more tense, as not showing Gerald and Eric the photo gives a feeling to suspense and tenseness.

Sheila’s not as ignorant and sees that human life needs to be respected and looked after. She demonstrates this by saying “But These Girls aren’t cheap labour-they’re people.” Sheila is the only one in the family who doesn’t have the same ignorant, class orientated views of her father. She feels for these people. The inspector has realised she’s easily impressionable and takes her under his wing But then she had Eva sacked from her job in Milwards so its making Sheila feel Guilty, one of the main themes of the play. He plays along with her by saying “It would do as all a bit of good if sometimes we tried to put ourselves in the place of these young women counting pennies.” He relates to Sheila by he feels sorry for these people and that they shouldn’t be treated like that. This comment makes Sheila stick to the inspector as he shows her that not all people are class orientated.

There is a big contrast during the entire play, of the happiness and wedding with the misery of death. This is shown by Birling saying “We were having a nice little family celebration tonight and a nasty mess you’ve made of it now.” The inspector replies by saying “That’s what I was thinking earlier tonight, when I was in the infirmary looking at what was left of Eva Smith.” This comment makes the inspector seem as though he is out for revenge. To avenge the death of a young women and the hands of the Birling family. He’s also able to manipulate the situation so it favours him, so he can work against them. The inspector says “A nasty mess somebody of it.” He doesn’t mention names; this slows the pace down as it was starting to speed up. Also it builds suspense as to who is to blame they already know the entire family’s involved but the “somebody” starts the blame game.

When the inspector starts to question Sheila she admits to it Straight away. She shows remorse and the inspector doesn’t make her feel insignificant, just tells her what she has done and makes her feel bad.

The inspector says “well we’ll try to understand why it had to happen and that’s why I’m here tonight.” He uses “we’ll”, he’s referring to the audience, trying to involve them, Get them to feel what’s going on, and make them feel like the prosecutors of the Birling’s. Giving them a sense of involvement and feeling. Why you fool he knows, of course he knows and I hate to think how much he knows that we don’t know yet, you’ll see you’ll see.” In a way Sheila already knows what’s going to happen, she at least tries to accept it. She’s acting as almost a side-kick to the inspector, when he’s not there she’s asking questions and inquiring.

The inspector uses Sheila against the other characters, by taking her side, bringing up her age, the amount of agony and pain she was in when Eva was dying and the contrast of Sheila’s happiness and Eva’s misery it makes Sheila feel guilty as to why should she have all this happiness when someone who was innocent of doing nothing was driven to death. The inspector knows Sheila understands him. So he works with her. This gives the impression that Sheila is his partner almost. They work against Mrs Birling. But Sheila does try to help her, give her advice, she chooses to ignore this continues in her arrogant, ignorant way as her husband did.

When it looks as though Birling’s going off on a long speech the inspector cuts In with authority power to stop him, and Birling tries to stomp his territory by using his long droning speeches, the inspector just over powers him using vocabulary, making Birling seem weak and feel angry.

The inspector controls the entire pace of the play by using his bluntness and words. And example of this is when he says; “And then you decided to keep her as your mistress?” Just talking about Daisy Renton being in a bar to being Gerald’s Mistress, this just comes out of the blue and shocks everyone. So he (Priestly) shows how he controls the pace of the play like that in such places. The inspector humiliates Gerald in front of everyone, by bringing up the affair; it makes Gerald feel like nothing, dirt, rubbish, so he leaves feeling ashamed of himself. Gerald being in the bar where he met Eva shows that he doesn’t really care about class, also he is marrying someone lower down in the class system even though his parents don’t approve but he doesn’t care.

Once the inspector starts interviewing Mrs Birling, she is also bring very stubborn and not seeing what’s in front of her,”public men, Mr Birling have responsibility as well as privileges.” He’s saying the Birling family weren’t taking responsibility for what they done. Saying they should own up to what they’ve done to Eva and take responsibility.

The inspector goes on to interview Mrs Birling were she admits being prejudiced against Eva Smiths case for having her last name. She refused her point blank because of that and because she wasn’t very open about her situation. But what makes Mrs Birling look cold and silly is that Eva Smith was having a baby. The inspector tricked Mrs Birling into confessing, as well as putting the blame on her son. In a way the inspector used everyone against themselves. He used there arrogance and stupidity to get what he needed from them. This phrase “To do my duty,” Is said just before Eric arrives and sounds as though he’s been doing nothing up until know and he’s waiting to make the final judgement. The inspector even lets Eric have a drink he almost sympathises with Eric.

After interviewing Eric he says they’re all to blame some more than others. But they all treated her like nothing they threw her out and took advantage of her because of her strong will and mind her good looks and her desperation. But still they refused her at the last chance and left her to peril.

The inspectors last speech makes them all feel responsible. But there needs to be responsibility for other people like Eva Smith.

He makes them all feel connected, as though what they do will affect everyone. “We are members of one body,” everything in the body is connected and it makes them all feel as though there are, one person, one body, one community, one world and that we are responsible for each other, also he uses we again referring to the audience to make them feel like one of this body, to make them feel a little bit responsible as well. “They will be taught it in Fire and Blood and Anguish.” This phrase talks about the two world wars where mankind didn’t learn its lesson first time around so it made the same mistake and it was paid in the form of the lives lost during those two wars. Priestly is writing about his personal experiences of the war he had to face.

After this they discover that the inspector is a fake (so they think) so they can just carry on as per usual. But Sheila and Eric have learnt they’re lesson and they will change their ways for the better.

The older generation have not improved and continue in the same way. When the phone call telling them Eva Smith has died they have just been taught a lesson they wouldn’t forget and they did…within seconds! It shows the faults of mankind and the blood, pain and anguish is being paid by the Birling’s.

The inspectors function isn’t just in the play but in real life. We have to see our own responsibilities and we have to take the blame for the actions we do wrong. But Priestly wanted to show what narrow minded, ignorant people can drive innocent young hard working people to do. The play title “An inspector calls” has nothing written about who it goes out to or what time period. So maybe it applies to everyone, making it a universal timeless theme. An inspector may be calling you…
