Gothic and Grotesque

Nothing is creepier than a gripping horror story, however today’s horror genre is filled with axe-wielding maniacs wanting to literally paint the town red. Two stories that probably would not come to mind when thinking of good “wholesome” horror are Franz Kafka’s “The Metamorphosis” and Joseph Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness.” Although neither of these works is classified as being in the horror genre, upon deeper analysis one will see that both of these works include elements one might classify as gothic, surreal, supernatural or grotesque. These works are not equal, however, as they both have more of one aspect than the other. Conrad’s work has a little bit of all four aspects, with many examples focussing on the surreal and supernatural themes. In contrast, Kafka’s work is less gothic, focussing more on the grotesque, surreal, and supernatural.

Before delving too deep into the works, it should be explained what is meant by the terms gothic, grotesque, surreal and supernatural. Gothic is a style of story that was popular between the 1800’s and the 100’s, often involving dark, dreary settings and evil plots. Edgar Allen Poe was a great gothic writer, whose chilling thriller stories had much to do with death and dying. Grotesque is defined by the Oxford Dictionary of Current English as meaning, “repulsively distorted” which is definitely the case in both of these authors’ characters. Surreal is a term used to describe things that are not quite real, or that may be too real to some. Like trying to look at a dim star straight on in the night sky; if you stare straight at it, it seems as if it is not even there, but by looking just a little off to the side, it seems to appear just outside your point of focus. Finally, supernatural is defined by Oxford as meaning, “manifesting phenomena not explicable by natural or physical laws.” This certainly holds true; turning into a giant bug is definitely not a natural phenomenon, unless you are a smaller bug to begin with.

Now that the definitions of the criteria have been made, it is time to look at the stories, starting with Conrad’s work. One can definitely detect a gothic flavour in “Heart of Darkness.” Its dark, dreary setting sets the gothic mood right away, giving a depressing, mildly horrific atmosphere. An example of this is the narrator’s description of the sunset at the very beginning of the story

And at last, in its curved and imperceptible fall, the sun sank low, and from

glowing white changed to a dull red without rays and without heat, as if

about to go out suddenly, stricken to death by the touch of that gloom

brooding over a crowd of men. (Short Fiction, 5)

Death and gloom unquestionably give the sunset a gothic spice. Even the title gives the feeling of a gothic tale. In Anthony Fothergil’s Open Guide to Literature Heart of Darkness he says “The title confronts us with a language which won’t, as it were, stand still” (). He goes on to ask the question Is it the centre of darkness, or the heart, which is dark that Conrad is referring to? (). Either way, the title gives one a premonition of gloom and evilness.

As well as being gothic, the title is also rather surreal. To leave the meaning open ended to the reader gives one the sense that the story reflects what they are thinking or feeling. This puts the story into the kind of un-reality that the surreal theme thrives in. Other surreal aspects of the story are many of the symbols regarding the underworld. Once again Fothergil voices his opinion on this subject, saying, “…it is a journey through the underworld for purposes of instruction as well as entertainment” (1). As well, Fothergil compares Kurtz to a “Shade” from classic mythology, which is an underworld inhabitant, unable to find peace, who feels the need to tell mortals their sad stories (4). This he definitely does, right up until the end with his last words “The horror! The horror!” (Short Fiction, 1). Surrealism is a big aspect in these examples; symbols of people and events with a deeper, darker meaning that touches the reader in profound ways. Perhaps everyone feels that they are making their own trek through the underworld, in their own little way.

Many of the symbols surrounding the character of Kurtz could also be seen as surreal. For example, there is the description that Marlow gives about attempted rescue of Kurtz “I had to beat this Shadow this wandering and tormented thing…” (Authoritative Text, 67). Marlow is superimposing the image of an uneasy, miserable spirit over Kurtz, but perhaps that is who Kurtz really is, and his humanity is all superimposed. Which is the reality? As well, when Marlow speaks of the impact that Kurtz has had on him, he says, “Confound the man! He had kicked the very earth to pieces” (Authoritative Text, 67). A very surreal image is conjured out of that statement Kurtz had shattered Marlow’s beliefs, shattered his “earth.”

Another example of surrealism comes from the book entitled Heart of Darkness An Authoritative Text, Background and Sources, Essays in Criticism, edited by Robert Kimbrough. Marlow is speaking of the two women in black he sees, sitting in chairs knitting. Upon seeing one of them, and the look in her eyes he says, “Not many of those she looked at ever say her again not half, by a long way” (11). This thought seems to say that the woman had some sort of power to curse those she looked at to death. Then again, it might just be that the people she looks at just never seem to come that way again. Two “realities” here, but which one is real and which is “surreal”?

Another theme represented by the old women is the theme of the supernatural. As stated above, one might take Marlow’s statement to mean the woman had some form of power to do harm. Also concerning the two women, he says to himself, “I thought of these two guarding the door of Darkness” (Authoritative Text, 11), which definitely brings one to think in terms of the supernatural; an image of two women, clad in black, guarding the entrance to all that is evil. As well, Marlow’s description of the dying natives definitely has a supernatural flavour, as he says, “I had stepped into the gloomy circle of some Inferno” (Authoritative Text, 17). This is a powerful image of the supernatural; the fires of Hell.

Although the scene with the dying natives can be called supernatural, one can also see how it could be classified as being grotesque. Marlow tells the reader how “Black shapes crouched, lay, sat between the trees, half coming out, half effaced within the dim light, in all the attitudes of pain, abandonment and despair…they were dying slowly…lying confusedly in the greenish gloom” (Authoritative Text, 17). What could be more grotesque than a painful, lonely, meaningless death? Death is the end of something beautiful; life. It is especially disgusting when there is no point to it, and it is done in pain.

Now that Conrad’s work has been analyzed, it is time to consider the work of Kurtz. First off, “The Metamorphosis” can definitely be classified as being grotesque. Even the concept of the story exemplifies this trait through the transformation of the main character into a gigantic bug, which is one of the most disgusting things that could happen to any human being. He is transformed into that which he would have stepped on without a second thought. His life has turned from something bearable into something abominable. What becomes of him at the end of the story is perhaps the most grotesque of it all; he becomes nothing more than an unloved dead bug. “[The charwoman pushed] Gregor’s corpse a long way to one side with her broomstick. Mrs. Samsa made a movement as if to stop her, but checked herself. ‘Well,’ said Mr. Samsa, ‘now thanks be to God’” (51). It is obvious that the family was relieved at the death of their horrifically metamorphosized son.

There are other critics who share the idea of “The Metamorphosis” being grotesque. Gunther Anders gives a great critique of the horror of many of Kafka’s stories when he says, “What makes the reading of [Kafka’s] stories such a gruesome experience is his manner of treating the grotesque as everyday normality” (1). This is evident in the first paragraphs of the story, as Gregor wakes up. He realizes he has turned into a very large insect, however he is more concerned with trivial, everyday happenings such as being late for work that with what has happened to him. The same attitude is shared by his family, but to a lesser degree. Instead of trying to find out the cause of the change, they merely keep Gregor locked in his room; out of sight, out of mind it seems.

Surrealism in “The Metamorphosis” is a very important aspect of the story. Perhaps Johannes Pfieffer best says it in his essay entitled “The Metamorphosis.” Pfieffer says that

“This balanced composition has a certain correspondence in the exactness

with which the room is imagined and in an kind of ‘magic realism,’

whereby objects are presented with such a compact wealth of detail that

they are constantly turned into something unreal or more than real” (5).

This statement virtually includes the meaning of the word surreal. The story is too fantastic to be taken literally; all Kafka’s symbols and descriptions are hints of something deeper, something more profound.

For example, look at the moving of furniture from Gregor’s room. At first Gregor is happy to have more room to walk about the walls and ceiling, until he realizes what is really happening on a deeper level. By taking out his furniture, they are denying him his humanity. In their eyes, he is an insect and nothing more now, and Gregor cannot bear that. “Did he really want his warm room…to be turned into a naked den in which he would certainly be able to crawl unhampered in all directions but at the price of …his human background?” (515).

Finally, what is Kafka’s story if it is not supernatural? The metamorphosizing of a man into an insect is definitely not any natural act. What makes Gregor’s metamorphosis all the more strange is that the author does not go into any detail as to how the change took place. Kafka simply tells the reader what has happened, and expects that it be accepted. Even the family does nothing to find the cause of Gregor’s change; they simply accept it, and attempt to deal with his paranormal transformation.

From the above examples, it is clear to see that there are many horrific themes in each story. Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness” has themes and examples that overlap, such as the title itself which can be seen as being both gothic and surreal, and the scene of the dying natives, which can be read as both supernatural and grotesque. Kafka’s “The Metamorphosis” does not have so much of a gothic flavour as it does supernatural, grotesque and surreal. The whole concept of the tale has all three of those aspects included in it; a man transformed into a bug. What could be more grotesque, supernatural, or surreal than that? In closing, one can see how chainsaw buzzing madmen will never compare to the subtle horrors of these two great artists.

“Blackberrying” described Plath’s life for once as being happy, she was happy in her new home where she could go blackberrying. The poem decribes blackberries in three ways. First the berries are described during the harvest and the great sensations you get while picking them. The second to define what happens when the berries get over developed and they end up falling off the bushes by themselves. The third part of the poem tells about how the mood can be switched from picking good berries to seeing the berries too ripe and falling off the bushes. The blackberries are fun to pick and very juicy. The consist of red and blue juices which, get all over your fingers when you pick them. The blackberries fill with flies when they are not picked right away, and the flies reun all the berries and there is nothing to pick. The only other thing that can make a person happy after the blackberries are gone is the sea, but the sea doesn’t come over often between the hills which, leave the place empty.

I think that Plath didn’t have a great life or rather felt her life was bad even when it wasn’t. The only thing that kept her motivated was the fact that where is lived she was able to go pick blackberries. The blackberries made he happy because she felt like she was helping the by picking them when they needed to be picked. She only got sad when she let them go to long and they became to ripe and bad. I think this is a good poem and really reflects how her life sometimes was. She always had ups and downs in her life and one of her high point in life was when she had the chance to pick blackberries.

I started the theme Art and Architecture by producing a series of design sheets in a wide range of media across a series of subjects. These include ceramics, d, fine art and textiles. In each subject I started different. For example, in ceramics I started looking at architecture and recreating it. Whilst in textiles I was producing several experiments with different materials.

Within a couple of weeks into term I went to Venice an Barcelona for 5 days where I collected primary research. I also produced observational drawings of what I saw and examples artists work, such as Arman, Rossi, Bennoton, Pomoro and Matise. I also visited galleries. These include Gallerie Dell Academia and The International Galleria of Modern art.

On my return I worked into the initial sketches from Venice and Barcelona using a. variety of media including sowing, perspex, clay, watercolour, etching and paints. I liked the etching best as this was a new media and process to me and I was looking forward to work with it. I also achieved a series of good quality prints which I will mount. I also did the same into my design sheets

Once I got my design sheets going I started developing test pieces and maquettes using my influence of Venice and Barcelona my drawings/paintings and artists. I experimented with different mark making techniques using ink, mono printing and paints. I also had a go on the sowing machine trying to recreate a photograph of Venice I took. I found this quite hard at first but with time and practise I improved and felt more confident using the sowing machine. I glazed my test pieces which I made in ceramics as well using a variety of different glazes because I wanted to see what different glazes to with different oxides.

I have learnt a lot about different techniques and process throughout this term. They include etching, using a sowing machine and developed mono printing. If I had to do this unit again I would liked to develop more by using more glazes and oxides as it would give me more of an variety of different effects you can achieve. I would have liked more time to develop my d model as I found it hard to join the rods together and took me over a week to come up with a solution. I am now ready to take my ideas further to develop a final outcome.

This paper is an analysis of the economic impact of governmental subsidies and fiscal policies on United Airlines after -11. This is an industry that much of our local, national and global economic vitality depends. An instantaneous and apparent financial consequence of the attacks was the full grounding of the airlines for days, which was followed by an unparalleled decline in demand. The value of planes plunged, as did the airline’s ability to obtain credit. Immediate stabilization measures, as lawmakers authorized cash compensation and institution of a federal loan guarantee program, prevented almost certain bankruptcy for many airlines and a loss of the nation’s second largest airline. This analysis indicates a strong potential for economic growth following the airline’s recovery. While the projected economic growth is not expected to exceed the potential, United Airlines (UAL) is in a position to capitalize on this growth as the global economy strengthens. The economic indicators provide UAL a unique insight to navigate strategically into the future. The economic forecast of United Airlines is a positive one that will be clearly demonstrated with the detailed analysis within this paper.

Narrative Outline for United Airlines Economic Analysis

Introduction

United Airlines (UAL) is one of the largest air carriers in the United States. The services provided by UAL range from providing domestic and intercontinental passenger air travel, to mail and cargo services. The history of UAL is interesting, as UAL has provided service to the nation throughout times of peace, as well as times of war. For this reason it is sometimes important for the government to sometimes provide monetary assistance and offer initiatives in order to prevent bankruptcy, as well as maintain uninterrupted service. This paper will discuss a brief history of United Airlines from its inception to present day. Government policies concerning monetary aid and initiatives will be presented as they relate to United Airlines. Additionally, economic indicators used to forecast policies and growth of United Airlines will also be outlined.

United Airlines Overview

UAL Corporation, commonly known as United Airlines, is in the trans-airline industry. UAL Corporation (UAL or the Company) was incorporated under the laws of the State of Delaware on December 0, 168. The world headquarters of the Company is located at 100 East Algonquin Road, Elk Grove Township, Illinois 60007. The Companys mailing address is P.O. Box 661, Chicago, Illinois 60666. The telephone number for the Company is (847) 700-4000.

The Company is a holding company and its principal subsidiary is United Air Lines, Inc., a Delaware corporation (United), which is wholly owned. United accounted for most of the Companys revenues and expenses in 001. United is a major commercial air transportation company, engaged in the transportation of passengers, property and mail throughout the U.S. and abroad.

March 8, 11 United Airline Inc. is established as a management corporation overseeing the United Aircraft Transportation Companies subsidiaries (UATC). UATC was comprised of National Air Transport, Boeing Air Transport, Varney Aircraft Transport and Pacific Air Transport. Initial formation of the subsidiaries were propagated by the US postal service and need to contract air transport for mail services, air mail. Due to charges of monopolies and collusion among air mail carriers, Congress passed the Airmail act of 14. The Air Mail Act forced airline companies to spin off airline and equipment manufacturing companies, hence Boeing and Stearman Aircraft were spun off to incorporate Boeing Aircraft company.

During World War II United assisted in the retrofitting of B-17 bombers at its Cheyenne, Wyoming facility. After the war, an economic peacetime boom that was not foreseen by many, put a very high demand on air travel by consumers. Airlines were able to reduce rates and compete with rail lines on fares. New aeronautic technology along with increased capacity allowed airlines like United to expand with great momentum. With a newly developed hub in Denver and a state of the art facility in San Francisco, United was now a truly transcontinental operation. During this time United introduced new flights to Hawaii.

The 50s and 60s saw changes in plane engines, and the ever increasing sizes of planes allowed United to enter the global market place. All the while United was considered the largest commercial carrier in the world. Several years following all-time high earnings, United fell on hard times and posted record losses. After the federal deregulation of airlines in 178, United made slow and steady gains throughout the 80s. The 0s brought increased growth as the airline opened many new international routes and the customer base grew at home as well as abroad.

Recent financial statements show Uniteds steady growth as they work to get back to the airline they once were. Statements submitted to the SEC, disclosing current business conditions, show United to currently employ over 00 pilots, 0,000 flight attendants, 1,000 mechanics and 4,000 passenger and ramp attendants. United owns over 40 planes while leasing in excess of 00 at an average age of 8 years old. UAL is a publicly traded entity on the New York Stock Exchange with a $45 dollar high in 001 and $ low. The Financial Statements released to the SEC were independently audited by Arthur Anderson LLC for the period ending December 1, 001 and the three years previous to that. Anderson was sure to note that changes in accounting practices, and origins of the changes, were identified.

Diversity in Our Small Group

Diversity is an integral factor, which promotes and helps stimulate an open society where ideas and reciprocal efforts can lead to a group’s success. Nothing can healthily succeed or prosper with only one element. As in cooking, construction, and the labor force, recipes, establishments, and the collective thought processes of humankind and evolutionary thought are best developed when there is a multinational and varying ethnic supplement of ideas and efforts. When people are not able to support and work in a diverse environment, workforce problems and stagnant thought will occur. This paper will aid in shedding some light on the murky and turbulent area of diversity, what it encompasses, and whom it affects.

Different personality traits exist within all individuals. At times, personality traits will be similar between members of a group. This could help the members of a group to relate to one another. However, differences in personalities could be good as well. People do not need to have the same personality traits in order to work together as a team. In fact, diversity can enhance the team. Each member of our group is very different, but there is one trait we definitely have in common we all understand the importance of humor. In all of our presentations so far, we have used humor as a way to connect to our audience. We feel that we can still be professional without being boring, and humor is a way to make the presentations more interesting. It (what is “It”?) also helps us relate at our learning team meetings. Not all members of our group are humorous individuals; however, humor has become a big part of our group, and a part of our “team personality”.

The aspect of diversity within our learning team with regards to our geographical differences is something that we are going to explore throughout the course of Organizational Behavior. Up until this class, we have experienced togetherness in proximity and organizational behavior. As a learning team, our geographical similarities (“our geographical similarities” is not your learning team) brought us together from the first class where we all met. It has been the glue that keeps us together when other issues of diversity arise. We are all located in the north county within a twenty-mile radius of one another. The convenience of our proximity has allowed for relaxed and enjoyable meetings that foster open communication and enriched brainstorming. As a group, we can all share the burden of hosting our team, and find that we quickly agree on places to meet for productive interaction.

Our challenge for this course will be to accept the growing diversity within our team as we allow a new member to permeate our fortified alliance. We have accepted Prince as our newest member and the geographical difference that he brings to our circle. He more than doubles the radius of our geographical proximity. Therefore, he widens the spectrum for the diversity within our team in many aspects. This will create new challenges and cause us to grow in our problem-solving skills as a team. We invite the challenges, but acknowledge the difficulty that it will bring. As a group we will all have to expand our communication skills to include more computer time and emailing. We have discussed the limitations that phone meeting and emails present, so we must devise new ways to keep optimal communication, without allowing any one of us to feel left out of the circle.

Age has a great impact on the dynamics and viewpoints of our group. Our group being all around the same general age has a great advantage. We all are at about the same place in our lives, starting families, beginning years of marriage or deciding whether to get married. This allows us to work together with great ease and be able to be more comfortable sharing with each other because we have a better understanding as to where we all are personally. It also allows us to have a lot of fun while together and we have developed friendships outside of school. These friendships have strengthened our team. Being at the same place in our lives, we are all hoping to achieve some of the same goals and can support one another in achieving them. With the positives, there are also negatives. The down side to being all around the same age is that we cannot pull from pervious generations for input. The way this has affected us the most was in our last class. We were in a class with a group that contained members in there thirties through their fifties. All of us being in our twenties, we had a different view on what we wanted to achieve from the class. We came up with a business that would create fantasy parties for our customers. We got really involved in presenting our business in an exciting manner, because our business was all about fun. The presentation did not go over well with the older group, whose opinion of a business was strictly focused on professionalism and delivering presentations that could bore a crowd into a deep sleep. From that class, we gained what older generations view as professional and how groups should present their speeches in class. Being younger does not give us a lack of personal experiences but it does limit us to the knowledge of only the world experiences that took place in our lifetime.

Another area of impact where our diversity will impact our team’s effectiveness is the area of gender. Our team diversity has changed this class with the addition of our new team member Prince. In the past, our group consisted of one male and three females. The addition of a second male will impact how our team communicates. During previous oral presentations, Matt was often seen as a dominant figure as he towered over the other group members and his baritone voice carried better. With the addition of Prince, the overshadowing caused by a single male will be dispersed, hopefully allowing more attention to the rest of the team. While the addition of Prince does bring better gender diversity, it may also lead to conflict. It is possible that a top rooster syndrome may develop if either Matt or Prince vies for leadership of the group. The addition of Prince to the learning team has another beneficial effect. It brings better balance to the team. Before, Matt was outnumbered three to one, and as such conversation often drifted to off-topics such as childbirth, breast-feeding or problems with husbands. With Prince as a second male in the group, conversation may be more restrained to subject matter pertaining to our schoolwork. On the other hand, it is possible that a second male may allow for whole new areas of counter productive male-based communication between Matt and Prince. The gender diversity our group has can be a weakness, though through understanding we can make our diversity one of our greatest strengths.

I (Who is I?) can recall two examples where a lack of diversity and acceptance towards diversity will work adversely towards personal goals and the benefit of an entire company. A PhD in astrophysics was applying for the NASA space shuttle program to conduct orbital research. He was fully qualified but was continually passed over. He was a known supremacist with current and traceable affiliations. That, obviously, would not propagate the International Space Station ideas and principles. (This paragraph doesn’t flow with the rest of the paper.)

Recently, a former employee in some management position for a well-known cola corporation left and reported discrimination against people of color in that company. It is very unfortunate that diversity is most commonly associated with the racial aspect and not according to, say, diversity in one’s workout regime or photographic collection. In the world that we live in, both past and present, we cannot seem to move past the impediment ones racial, gender, and sexual affiliation causes in others. We must intrinsically accept diversity in all aspects of life, instead of just at the restaurants. You are not making any changes or building bridges just because you eat at an ethnic restaurant or listen to another group’s music.

If my decomposing carcass helps nourish the roots of a juniper tree or the wings of a vulture - that is immortality enough for me. And as much as anyone deserves. This quote came directly from the mouth of Edward Abbey, an author of the 0th century. As people, we make decisions everyday. A decisive answer always needs to come out of a situation. Millions and even billions of people look back upon a lifetime of happiness or sadness and wish for a second chance to make a difference or live a while longer. Doctors and family members ask every second What if there was a cure for cancer? Although some minds, such as Edward Abbey, think of death as merely a part of life, cancer patients cherish every heartbeat and every breath that they inhale. An answer for this devastating disease has never been found. Tons of victims, infants to senior citizens, would get a second chance at life.

This malignant disease has claimed heaps upon heaps of souls over the past centuries. Every year, tons of walkers line high school and college tracks to participate in The Relay for Life. This event raises money for hospitals. These facilities use the proceeds to aid in the research of this human killer. Specialists use the intake from The Relay for Life to search for an ultimate treatment. A cure would give new beginnings to thousands of children and senior citizens. The little boy across the road could play with all of the other kids instead of lying in a hospital bed waiting for his eyes to close a final time.

As the seconds tick by, somebody will be diagnosed with this fatal illness. Cancer sufferers can use alternative treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation. However, a complete restore to health has not yet accumulated. A clean bill of health would give adults the pleasure of interacting with their children again. Obviously a much more fulfilling activity, rather than under going a chemo treatment or a bone marrow transplant.

Senior citizen victims can again go out and relate with friends and family. Also, an elder will be able to visit the beloved grandchildren. Christmas will never be a sad time with relatives sitting around the table wondering if this is the last holiday with grandma or grandpa. Visits to the hospital to see a withering family member will not be a concern. Grandparents now dine with acquainteances at a favorite restaurant.

As researchers come closer and closer to a final answer in the fight against cancer, patients continue to deteriorate and try to live life to the fullest. Death is one thing that man hasnt conquered and will never beat. A longer life will always be hoped for by the dying. It seems as if this fatal disease cheats many from happiness. Cancer cures are sought after at this very moment. To find a cure would give a meaning to life for millions of people.

Summer of my German soldier is a very captivating story and entertaining story. The book is very interesting and attention getting. The movie that is based off the book is also interesting but not as good as the book. If we compare the two they reveal they’re many differences in style, context, feeling, and emotion but at the same time, they reveal their differences. Through this piece of writing, I hope to show the similarities and differences between the two works of art.

Patty, the main character in both the movie and the book is very multi dimensional person. Meaning that she has many sides to her. For example, she has a side that always loves to lie to people, but she has a side that always wants to help and be compassionate to everyone that is around her. In both the book and the movie Patty is surrounded by people that she loves and people love her. In the movie and the book, there are also some people that do not love her. The people that do not love her still do have her love even though she does not have there’s. Through out both the book and the movie I began to understand that there are the people that make her feel that she is valued and some that don’t. At dictionary.com, the definition of value is Worth in usefulness or importance to the possessor. Both the movie and the book showed how people valued Patty but the book showed it differently then the movie did.

When I started reading the book, I met and very nice character by the name of Ruth. Ruth in both the book and the movie is Ruth’s family’s housekeeper. She does many things in the house for the family. As the book and the movie move along, I began to understand Patty and Ruth’s relationship. I understood that they are very close and tight while they also share everything with each other. Ruth shows Patty that she really cares about her and that Patty is of something of value to her. Ruth is always interested in Patty and her life. In the book, it was conved to me that she was involved in every aspect of Patty’s life.

Every day before Patty left for her days activities she always had a nice conversation with her and made her breakfast, which Patty came to love, and like a lot. This is how the book showed how Ruth valued Patty. The movie shows how Ruth valued Patty in a different way. The movie showed that Ruth did value Patty but in a different way then the book did. The movie showed Patty always eating Ruth’s breakfast that she cooked but it did not show them always having a conversation together. It only showed them talking briefly and not sharing in depth conversations as it did in the book.

Patty did not only come close to Ruth but she also met an older man named Anton. Anton was a German who was caught by the United States and brought back to the US as a POW (Prisoner of War). When he first got to Patty’s home town he was taken to a prisoner camp near the town. Then one day all the POW’s including Anton came in to Patty’s family store to buy some straw hats. Patty was in there and Anton caught her eye and attention. From there many things happened such as Anton escaping from the POW camp and Patty providing him with a hideout. This was all shown and written in the same way. The only difference from the book to the movie is that Anton shows and expresses less expression then the books expresses through the writing. For example, when Patty and Anton are in the hideout talking in the book their conversations seem more personal and deeper in thought while in the movie they seem like they have a conversation just to have one.

Not only does Ruth and Anton show that Patty is valued but also her grandparents show that she is valued. In both the book and the movie the take her in at the end of each and care for her and nurture her all they can.

At the same time, Patty has people that love her and people that claim to love her. One person that has a large part in her life is her father. Patty’s father is one of the characters that claims to love her but does not show it nor make her feel like she is loved by him. Her father throughout the book and movie gets mad at her in deals with her making him mad in different ways depending if it was the move or the book. In the movie, her father just yells at her and verbal abuses her while in the movie he beats her with his belt.

Overall, the entire entire book and the movie are two very good works of art. They captivated my mind and entertain it at the same time. They both show what it is like to be valued and what it is like not to be valued. Both the book and the movie also show how to value people in real life. Even though they are based of the same plot line, they share many differences, which makes them so unique.

Afterwards by Thomas Hardy

Afterwards Analysis

The poem Afterwards by Thomas Hardy consists of five stanzas, each one a quatrain. Hardy is anticipating his own death and questioning how he will be remembered. The use of nature, not in the abstract sense but in his own feelings towards it and the sensitivity of his observations of nature contrasts his mortality. He wants to be remembered as a man who “used to notice such things”

The “Present” tense is personified in the first stanza as it latched its postern. A postern is a back door and a private exit giving the first indication the poet fears his death will pass quietly and unnoticed. Use of alliteration may month glad green and assonance dewfall-hawk emphasise the grandeur of seemingly ordinary things and events. A beautiful description of dusty leaves being coated with new-spun silk creates an almost fairy like image and once again stresses the frail enchantment of ordinary things in nature. In the final line of each stanza, Hardy puzzles how he will be remembered. He uses “may think/say” because he is only using his own opinion on how he would like to be perceived and being dead he would never actually know how he would be remembered.

Hardy identifies himself to innocent creatures, because they like him are doomed to death. The nightjar bird known in Hardy’s local area as the dewfall-hawk makes a great deal of noise when it is still, yet is silent and fast when flying. Hardy compares his poetry to the strange noises the bird makes when it is still and his life to the bird in flight, ending both quickly and unnoticed. The “eyelid’s soundless blink” emphasises the silence of the “dewfall-hawk” during flight and also reminds readers of the senses sight and sound, that is essential to observe nature. Hardy feels out of place with his wild ideas in his structured environment like a hedgehog that “travels furtively over the lawn”. A hedgehog is a wild animal and also seems out of place when it is crossing the lawn - an area that man has recultivated.

The main contrast in the poem is between the vivid life of nature and the energy of Hardy as he observes this, against the dull grey lives of the people he lives among. However Hardy does not judge them harshly, but can “do little for them” and hopes that they will “notice such things” and realise how valuable natural beauty is. The tone of the poem is self-deprecating and full of regret. He doubts that he will be remembered as anything but someone who sat and watched the world go by, yet does not blame people for thinking this. Hardy uses the words “neighbours” and “gazer” to describe other people he vaguely notes. He is not concerned with them so they appear far less clear than the small creatures he notices and appreciates. Hardy’s observations of nature are also unpretentious and accurate. The modesty in describing “full starred heavens” and “glad green leaves” increases the “mysteries” of these seemingly ordinary things, as anyone can observe them but only he seems to be able to appreciate their strange beauty.

“Bells of quittance” in the final stanza links the theme of Hardy’s anticipated death that was first established in the first stanza. Repetition of the bells initial “outrollings” which “cuts a pause” after a “crossing breeze” illustrates how the spirit of his poetry is passed on and continues like the chiming of the bells, despite the slight pauses caused by the death of individuals.

The sudden, swift, severe summer storm caught me totally unaware. I was walking down Old Salem Road when the clouds started to build. I looked around as I huddled under a large, dead oak tree. Almost all of the houses on this abandoned street were too badly damaged for me to take shelter in, except for one.

The house loomed impressive and morbid in the greenish-black sky. A flash of lightning briefly illuminated the house. The windows were broken, but the superstructure seemed sound.

I was becoming soaked as I pondered my dilemma. Should I stay under the tree and risk getting hit by lightning or should I go into that old house, not know who, or what, might be in there? The storm decided for me. Lightning hit the tree, filling the air with the sent of scorched sap. I dashed onto the porch and pounded on the door. It was open.

What was that? I thought, my heart in my mouth. I slowly turned around. I didnt see anyone, but that didnt mean that there couldnt be someone else in the house with me. It was a large house. I hesitated before I went into the living room. My lantern, my best friend at the moment, showed off ancient paintings of a red-haired man with angular features and a host of antiques. Over a marble fireplace, in the far side of the room, hung a silvery mirror with plump, little cherubs surrounding it.

Crash. I jumped and almost dropped the lantern. My heart stopped as I listened for another sound. The silence throbbed in my ears. I stood at the bottom of the staircase. The sounds had come from upstairs. I swallowed my fears and climbed the stairs.

On the second floor I found a bathroom so obsolete that it didnt even have any running water. Since I didnt have any business to do in there, I left it undisturbed. I found several bedrooms laden with cloth-covered antiques, moth-ridden clothes that might have been beautiful at one time, and tarnished jewellery.

At the end of the second floor, I found yet another stair well. This one was dark and coated with lacy spider webs. It led to what must have been the childrens floor at one point. There was a playroom that took up most of the space, along with two bedrooms with dainty furniture, and the nurses room. What I mistook for a closet at first was really a narrow flight of stairs that lead into the attic.

A giant rat scampered across my feet. Its beady eyes glowed red in the flicker in lantern light. It hissed at me. I screamed and dropped my lantern. Suddenly, I was plunged into utter darkness. I took several deep breaths to calm my trembling body and finished my trek up the stairs.

Vivid flashes of lightning illuminated the attic. A vase lay in pieces in front of the broken window. Well, at least I know what caused the crash. I mused to myself. I found an old thread bare cloak. I had intended it used it to cover the broken window, but on my way there, I tripped over a large box.

The trunk wasnt locked, but age had rusted it shut. I gripped the top and pulled with all of my strength. The trunk protest, but finally gave in. Another rat jumped at my ankle. I yelled and lunged forward. I hit something solid inside the trunk. Whatever I had hit, it didnt feel like antiques or clothes. My hand wondered upward and found a large protruding.... nose! I turned my head and gasped.

A flash of lightning briefly seared the sky. The harsh light highlighted a wide mouth with vermilion lips, glowing canines, a nose, red curly hair and stern eyebrows. The mans eyes were open and staring at me.

Suddenly, the faint, acrid smell of wood smoke reached my nose. I felt something burning me. I pushed the man away and cried out. Fire felt like it was licking at me. I backed up against the far wall. The flames had already enveloped the man. As a second flash of lightning suddenly blinded me in a flash, I blinked. Opening my eyes quickly to maintain a view of the burning figure, nothing, just a mirror.

There was a sudden explosion when lightning hit the roof above me. I was blown out of the window and into a slimy fountain. The piercing wail of a siren cut through the crackle of the burning house.

A fire fighter lifted me out of the fountain. I stared at his neck. Suddenly, I felt a sharp pain in my mouth. I cried out. The fire fighter hugged me once then wrapped me in a blanket. I blacked out as I was slipped into a waiting ambulance.

Merit goods Merit goods are goods that would be under-provided in a pure free-market economy. This is because they have external benefits that people would not take into account when they made their decisions about how much to consume. An example is vaccinations. As a result of people being vaccinated we keep disease out of the country, but if it was left just to the market many people might choose to take the risk and not pay for vaccinations. This could have negative effects for society.

Monetary Policy Committee The Monetary Policy Committee is a committee of the Bank of England chaired by the Governor that meets monthly to set the level of interest rates in the economy. They set interest rates according to the targets they have been set for inflation. If they feel inflation is set to rise they may increase interest rates and vice-versa.

Fiscal policy Fiscal policy is the use of government expenditure and taxation to try to influence the level of economic activity. An expansionary (or reflationary) fiscal policy could mean

ɨ cutting levels of direct or indirect tax

ɨ increasing government expenditure

The effect of these policies would be to encourage more spending and boost the economy. A contractionary (or deflationary) fiscal policy could be

ɨ increasing taxation - either direct or indirect

ɨ cutting government expenditure

These policies would reduce the level of demand in the economy and help to reduce inflation.

Inflation Inflation is a sustained increase in the general price level. In other words it is the rate at which prices are increasing. It can be measured either monthly, quarterly or annually. It is usually measured by the Retail Price index.

Cost-push inflation Cost-push inflation occurs when a companys costs rise and to compensate they have to put their prices up. Cost increases may happen because wages have gone up or because raw material prices have increased.

INFLATION - INTRODUCTION

Monetary policy is about setting interest rates to control inflation. It sounds straightforward enough. But to undertake the Interest Rate Challenge, participants will need to have some understanding of what inflation is and how it occurs. And they will need to know how interest rates are used to control inflation - how monetary policy works. This section provides some background to set teams on their way. There is no need to know all the material back to front. The aim is to give teams a flavour of what matters when interest rates are set.

ɨ

In very broad terms, each household that owns or is buying its own property has on average positive equity worth about £45,000. This is the difference between the average house price and the average outstanding mortgage and this represents a figure of more than twice the national average wage. Although it is hard to convert this wealth into cash, there are two macro economic effects that cause concern to policymakers.

ɨ The first and most obvious is that as households feel their wealth growing, they feel less inclined to save. As Chart 1. shows, over the long-term, UK consumers have on average saved, or not spent, a sum equivalent to %-10% of income. That ratio currently is lower (.8%) than it has been at any time since the series began in 164. What is also very clear is that the propensity to save in the last 0 years has fallen fastest at times when house prices have been rising fastest. (Comparisons with earlier periods are less relevant because of lower levels of home ownership and lower real incomes which made saving less likely.)

ɨ There are other factors contributing to a falling saving ratio (such as increasing confidence about job prospects, fewer fears of redundancy and lower interest rates which offer poorer nominal returns on savings) but housing is central to the argument. A rise in consumer confidence, the so-called feel good factor will encourage consumers to spend and borrow.

ɨ The resulting threat of inflation has in the past led the authorities to raise interest rates to slow spending. By raising the cost of mortgages, this policy reduces disposable incomes and cuts spending. The cost of borrowing will also be raised, which will be another downward pressure on spending as will the fact that the rise in house prices is likely to slow, or be choked off altogether if rates go high enough. (The doubling of base rates in a 15 month period in 188-8 led to house prices falling.)

Chart1_ Savings rates.xlsChart1_ Savings rates.xls

Source ONS

ɨ A second way house prices can underpin the rapid growth of consumer spending is by the mechanism of equity release. Often of a longer-term nature than credit card borrowing or overdrafts, homeowners unlock some of the equity they have built up in their property to support consumption. Repayments are frequently linked to the existing mortgage and the value to the homeowner of pursuing this course depends on the future trend of house prices and interest rates.

ɨ Many financial institutions make this type of facility readily available and in the late 180s, as Chart 1.4 shows, it added another 8% of potential spending to an already overheated consumer sector. With house prices once again rising, equity release is starting to pick up. It is not yet at a level which would worry the Monetary Policy Committee but, given how unbalanced the UK economy has become in 000 and 001, the fact that equity release is starting again to edge up, will not have escaped their attention.

Concordia Casting Company, based in Fort Wayne, Indiana, was a large, multidivisional organization that was originally an automobile part supplier, but has recently broadened its operations to include four business segments automotive, machine tools, precision parts, and fluid control. Much of Concordia’s growth has come through acquisition. Concordia currently uses Centronic programs written by the Concordia staff as their company system. In 18, Centronic Computers Inc. announced that they were discontinuing Concordia’s line of equipment and would no longer support it and also indicated that there was no migration path with their product line. The long-term viability of Concordia was in question by most of the industry at this point and a conversion of systems at this point was unwise. However, a conversion to a new IBM system was necessary in order to ensure the survival of the company.

In evaluating the management of the CAPS, there seemed to be two major problems with the project poor project planning/estimation and project staffing problems. The first problem that is evident throughout the CAPS was poor project planning. This is evident in several situations throughout this case. One of the major project management issues in the case was the poor estimates of the programming years it would take to complete the CAPS project. There appeared to be several reasons for the poor estimates. The first reason is that no one at Concordia could fully understand or appreciate the difficulties involved in building a complex, independent network system from scratch. Another reason is that 40% more enhancements had been added to the new system as compared to the old system. The final reason is that the old system has evolved while the new system was being developed and there were several modifications that had been made to the old system. The initial estimate by Concordia required 15 programmer-years. By 11, the conversion estimate had risen to 75 programmer-hours. For the reasons stated above, the scope and requirements of the project continues to expand not allowing the management of this project to be able to adequately plan this project from start to completion.

Aim

I am trying to find out how the concentration of acid affects the rate of reaction between marble and acid. I could do this in three different ways but I have chosen to use a balance to measure the mass lost during the experiment. The other two ways I could have chosen to use are 1)time how long the

Independent variables

The independent variables in this experiment are

The concentration of acid

Quantity of marble

Volume of acid

Mass of marble

Surface area of marble

Temperature of acid

Dependant variable

The variables that I am measuring from are the time taken and the mass loss of the solution as it is reacting. This will show me the rate of reaction.

Method

I will now go through step by step how I will do my Investigation.

„ First I will measure out my marble into gallipots using a balance. I have chosen to use 10 grams of marble.

„ Then I will measure out 40ml of the required concentration of acid using a syringe and then put it in a conical flask and weigh it on a balance. I will have to add the mass of the acid and the mass of the marble together to get the starting mass of the solution because if I weigh it while the marble is in the solution it will have already started to react and therefore will be inaccurate.

„ After I have calculated the starting mass I will add the marble to the acid and start the stopwatch.

„ Every 0 seconds I will take a reading from the balance up until 5 minutes.

„ I will repeat this with the same concentration of acid to get my second reading.

„ I will carry out this experiment for each of the concentrations of acid from 0.5 to 4 molar doing two tests for each one.

„ When I have all of my results I will work out the average results by adding the results from the two tests and dividing by two.

To get the concentrations of acid needed I had to dilute acid with water. This is the table to show the quantity of acid to water.

Concentration needed (molars) Amount of acid (ml) Amount of water (ml)

0.5 0 ml of 1 molar acid 0 ml

1 40 ml of 1 molar acid 0 ml

1.5 15 ml of 4 molar acid 5 ml

0 ml of 4 molar acid 0 ml

.5 5 ml of 4 molar acid 15 ml

0 ml of 4 molar acid 10 ml

.5 5 ml of 4 molar acid 5 ml

4 40 ml of 4 molar acid 0 ml

Apparatus

Conical flask ¡V to perform the reaction in

Balance ¡V to measure the mass of the marble, starting mass and the mass loss

Acid ¡V to react with the marble

Marble ¡V to react with the acid

Stop watch ¡V to time the solution as it reacts

Syringe ¡V to measure the acid and water

Safety goggles ¡V to protect my eyes

Controls

I will keep all independent variables the same apart from concentration of acid. I will also keep all the apparatus the same.

Prediction

I predict that there will be more mass loss from the experiment with the highest concentration of acid because chemical reactions occur when reacting particles collide with each other. Increased concentration means increased number of particles resulting in an increased number of collisions and an increased rate of reaction.

Safety

The following safety precautions should be taken into consideration

I will make sure that all bags are under the tables so that no one will trip over them

I will also make sure that I have a clear workspace so that nothing will knock any chemicals over

I will wear safety goggles at all times so that no chemicals spit out into my eyes

Notes for Affidavit RE grounds for change of judge-- (Carlos)

Judge cannot/will not be fair and impartial in this custody case. A significant part of the custody case to be heard requires a grasp and understanding that the violence and harassment of domestic abuse against the mother has a direct detrimental effect on the children.

The law demands such recognition in custody cases (state law #?)

When Judge Plante denied an immediate order of protection in Dec. 1, he knew Brian had been convicted of domestic abuse just months earlier in August 1. He knew Brian had chased Melissa down, threatening her, and even after Melissa was forced to lock herself in her home to escape Brian’s violence, Brian continued to beat, punch, and kick the door and threatened to beat Melissa. Judge Plante said Brian “was just joking.”

Domestic violence is no joke. That Judge Plante “knew” that a convicted domestic abuser was “just joking” illustrates conclusively that John Paul Plante should not be presiding over this custody case.

If Judge Plante is sitting on the bench, Melissa will not receive her legal right to a fair and impartial trial.

If Judge Plante denies he said Brian “was just joking”, it’s irrelevant because he denied an immediate order of protection against a convicted domestic violence abuser.

Additional Melissa Notes

Furthermore, I have been in front of many judges. On June 1, 00, at the moment Judge Plante stated he was the protection order denying judgeit dawned on me precisely who the man is and that he cannot be depended on for fairness and impartiality.

I live a life of constant, harassment, fear, dread. I deal in the present as a coping mechanism. Judge Plante enlightened me on June 1, 00 that he was the judge and it connected the dots. All the events I’ve gone through are a million dots, Plante spoke and a disturbing image immerged.

The most evident personification of outside power is in the phone conversations that occur throughout Act I and Act II, and, in this instance, the evidence is two fold - both in the physical ringing of the phone and the ensuing dialogue. The ringing of the phone continually interrupts John and Carols discussion, typically at an extremely important juncture or during a rather progressive dialogue, thus a seemingly blatant illustration of how outside forces shape and changes the direction of these two characters. Moreover, the dialogue that takes place between John and the caller strongly implicates John as having a desire to conform to the force of power, which is, again, not a personification of Academia or intellectual power but simple the authority and strength of Mass Society, everything outside of John and Carol, everything begging the two to conform. And though silence and disruption of dialogue has its place within Foucaults notions of power and society, there is also a place for the confessions of these phone conversations. As Foucault states

The obligation to confess is now relayed through so many different points, is so deeply ingrained in us, that we no longer perceive it as the effect of a power that constrains us; on the contrary, it seems to us that truth, lodged in our most secret nature, demands only to surface . . . and it can finally be articulated only at the price of a kind of liberation (History 60).

In Act I, the phone interruptions are perhaps the most intense and therefore the most problematic to the struggle of the characters. As Act I opens, Johns dialogue with the caller gives the audience an immediate instance of his need to conform to the outside forces by the steady yes/no conflict Well, yes, Im Im . . . no, Im sure its signif significant to mmmmmm . . . did you call Jerry? (Pause) Because . . . no, no, no, no, no (Mamet 1) as well as his subordinate ending I will (). This seeming admittance of inferiority is repeated later in Act I, again in closing to the same caller, I will. Right away (Mamet ). The yes/no conflict is also repetitious throughout Act I, John stating repeatedly to the caller yes. I talked to him. Well meet you at the No, because Im with a student (Mamet 0), and even into Act II which is why I . . . yes, no, no (55). The importance of this yes/no variance is that it displays the decision that John is being forced to make between his own individuality and the need to conform. The only deviation from his answering the phone, the one instance in which he does not answer it, further details how the individuality vs. conformity argument works. By not picking up the phone, John is able to actually progress the conversation and thereby approach Carol with the concept of breaking from conformity

Marcel Proust is considered by many to be the greatest French novelist of the twentieth century. He discovered a world through his creative exploration of his memory. Marcel Proust was born on July 10, 1871 to a wealthy middle-class Parisian family. His father was a well-known doctor and his mother was a highly educated woman. Marcel was deeply devoted to his mother (Maynard, 675). Remembrance of Things Past is a story Proust wrote based on his own childhood. The first part of Remembrance of Thins Past is the Swann’s Way Overture. This introduction immediately takes us into the intense and slightly strange world of the narrator. Everything is expressed as a reminiscence of the past. These thoughts are not presented in chronological order, but instead as the memories occur to the narrator, Marcel. Very little actually happens in this section. Instead, most of the section is taken up with Marcels described memories and his thoughts and reflections about the people he meets and the things that happen to him.

Marcel tells the story of his childhood in the French countryside from the perspective of his old age, as he looks back on his youth. As a child, he is somewhat sickly and nervous, always needing the company of his mother. Marcel remembers that whenever he visited his grandparent’s house in the French village of Combray, his insomnia would keep him up all night long. In order to make him feel better, the young Marcel is given a lantern which projects pictures from childrens stories onto his bedroom walls. Marcel begins to fear bedtime more because he now cannot recognize his room. His only source of comfort is the goodnight kiss his mother gives him each night, even though he knows that his father disapproves of this ritual and that his mother secretly hopes that he will grow out of it. Marcel comes to depend on these kisses to comfort and calm him.

One night, when Marcels father does not let him kiss his mother on the cheek, Marcel decides to revolt. He has Francoise (the maid) take his mother, who is entertaining a family friend Swann, a note begging her to come see him in his room. At first his mother refuses, but once Swann has gone and she sees how miserable Marcel is, she decides to spend the night in his room. He is shocked when his father urges her to stay in Marcels room. Even though Marcel feels victorious at first, he soon realizes that winning his mothers presence provided his family with acknowledgment that he suffers from a nervous ailment. His guilt makes him cry even more and his mother had to struggle to keep back her own tears. To calm Marcel’s nerves, his mother offers to read him a book “Look, since you can’t sleep, and Mamma can’t either, we mustn’t go on in this stupid way; we must do something; I’ll get one of your books” (Proust, 707).

An important theme emerges in this section which is Marcels emotional attitude toward his mother. Marcel looks to her for guidance, sympathy, and love, but when he receives these comforts, he feels guilty about not being more independent. He experiences this guilt by envisioning the effects that his need for his mother has on her. As Proust writes, “I ought to have been happy; I was not. It struck me that my mother had just made a first concession which must have been painful to her…” (706). As a result, their relationship is tainted by Marcels belief that he is always causing her some sort of grief.

Marcels desire for his mothers goodnight kiss anticipates one of the novels major themes - the romantic desire of men for women. Marcels desire for his mother is not strictly romantic, but it does suggest that mens desire for women is a key part of their lives. Often times the reason for this desire is to gain approval and affection from their beloved. Marcel feels at ease when he is in the presence of his mother.

In Remembrance of Things Past, Marcel Proust used his childhood in order to show how his youth affected the rest of his life. His thoughts are displayed as memories through the narrators mind. Marcel’s longing for comfort and consolation from his mother occupy much of the story. When Marcel finally gets what he wants, he is overcome by guilt and his lack of independence.

The Role of Trust In Shakespeare

We are ready to represent the best custom paper writing assistance that can cope with any task like The Role of Trust In Shakespeare even at the eleventh hour. What Role Does Trust Play In Shakespeare?

Throughout the quarter we have read many of Shakespeare’s works

closely and carefully. From each work we learned valuable lessons

that can be applied to everyday life today. Shakespeare is able

to capture humanity at its low points and high ones to create

the “average” society. In a sense Shakespeare is an advice columnist,

giving counsel to people in all walks of life. Throughout this

paper I plan to focus on Shakespeare’s guidance concerning trust

in relationships.

The most important facet of a relationship is trust. In many

of the plays the issue of trust is discussed. The first play

I would like to discuss is “Twelfth Night”. During this play

it seems as if everyone is in search of meaningful relationships.

Orsino is attempting to court Olivia, yet Olivia wants Cesario.

This causes some friction because Orsino trust Cesario deeply.

Orsino says “Thou knowest no less but all; I have unclasp’d/

to thee the book even of my secret soul” (1.4.1-14). This shows

us the blossoming of a relationship between Orsino and Cesario

after only three days. Though this trust is premature, it is

earned throughout the play. When trust is broken there is a

high price to pay, lost friendship or death in extreme cases.

Later on in the play when Orsino believes Cesario has betrayed

him he states “I’ll sacrifice the lamb that I do love/to spite

a raven’s heart within a dove” (4.1.16-17).

Another relationship that we watch grow from minor to major

is that of Antonio and Sebastian. Antonio does not know Sebastian

yet he takes care of him after the shipwreck. Sebastian begins

the relationship deceitfully by giving him a false identity.

When Sebastian begins to realize Antonio’s benevolence he tells

the truth. Even though Antonio has been lied to he trust Sebastian

so much that he gives him money, and risk his life to ensure

Sebastian’s well being. But when Antonio mistakes Cesario for

Sebastian, and Cesario denies Antonio conflict arises. Antonio

rebukes Cesario by saying

But O how vile an idol proves this god

Thou hast, Sebastian, done good feature shame.

In nature there’s no blemish but the mind;

None can be call’d deform’d but the mind;

Virtue is beauty, but the beauteous evil

Are empty trunks o’erflourish’d by the devil. (.4.8-)

Once again we see that trust is essential, and the abuse of trust

is grounds for dismissal.

In “The Merry Wives of Windsor” mistrust and jealousy fuel Ford’s

and Page’s “infidelity hunt”. Ford is the jealous husband, while

Page is the more confident. However, these two positions grow

increasingly closer as the play goes on. Falstaff trust his

men Nim and Pistol with his plan to seduce both Mistress Page

and Mistress Ford. And in return Nim and Pistol inform Mr. Page

and Mr. Ford of Falstaff’s plot. From almost the beginning of

the play we are aware of Ford’s jealousy toward his wife. This

is all unprovoked up until he is made aware of Falstaff’s courting.

Ford’s mistrust is deepened when he finds out that his wife

has invited Falstaff into their home. After many failed attempts

to catch their wives cheating the husbands are made aware of

the wives scheme to trick Falstaff. Ford feels so dumb that

he declares

Pardon me, wife. Henceforth, do what thou wilt;

I rather will suspect the sun with cold

Than thee with wantonness now doth thy honour stand,

In him that was of late an heretic,

As firm as faith. (4.4.5-)

In the end Page’s faith in his wife is reaffirmed, while Ford’s

jealous spirit is trampled. Shakespeare has shown once again

how important reliance is regarding relationships, especially

concerning marriage.

The Duke of Gloucester in “Richard III” is seen to be one of

the most villainous characters in all of Shakespeare’s works.

Though everyone in the play knows of Richard’s character, his

oratory abilities allow him to gain peoples trust. Richard’s

brother Clarence believes that Richard will come to his rescue,

thus trusting him with his life. Clarence is oblivious to the

fact that he is being held captive because of Richard. Clarence

is so faithful in his brother that he refuses to believe his

murderers when they tell him Richard has sent them. Clarence

states “O, no, he loves me, and he holds me dear/ Go you to

him from me”(1.4.18-1). After they speak badly about Richard

Clarence replies “O, do not slander him, for he is kind” (1.4.7).

Clarence meets his death while still taking up for his devilish

brother. Here we see that unwavering trust is dangerous when

it is not justified.

In “Measure for Measure” we are told the story of Claudio’s

imprisonment, his sister’s attempt to have him pardoned, and

Angelo’s requirements for granting a pardon. Though we know

The Duke and Isabella plan to trick Angelo, they trust Angelo

to be true to his word. Angelo receives his payment and does

not set Claudio free. Angelo abuses the trust of The Duke by

compromising his authority and that of Isabella by not pardoning

Claudio. In the end he is chastised, almost executed and forced

to marry Mariana.

In “Macbeth” trust in the witches prophesies is the cause of

Macbeth’s rise and fall. Macbeth believes he will be king so

much that he murders his king in his own house. He has his friend

Banquo killed based on his belief in prophesy. In his second

trip to see the witches they update him telling him that he should

beware of Macduff; he can’t be killed by anyone born of woman;

and he will be safe until Birnam Woods comes to Dunsinane Castle.

All of these prophesies are true again, but Macbeth’s faith

leads to his demise.

Finally we have King Leontes in “The Winter’s Tale”. This play

tells the tale of a King who plainly “turns something into nothing”.

Leontes suspects his good friend Polixenes of having an affair

with his wife. When he approaches Camillo regarding the situation

Camillo denies any knowledge of cuckoldry. Leontes deems Camillo

negligent due to his disagreement. The “green-eyed monster”

causes Leontes to distrust his wife so much that he has her imprisoned

without proof. He is so overcome by jealousy that he has his

own child abandoned in the woods. After he receives word from

the Oracle that Hermiones is chaste he refuses to believe it

saying “There is no truth at all i’th the oracle/ The sessions

shall proceed this is mere falsehood!” (..148-14). It takes

the death of his son and wife for Leontes to recognize his folly.

In conclusion it is clear that a relationship built without

trust is sure to fall. Weather the relationship is a friendship

or a marriage jealousy is capable of destroying the strongest

bonds. Shakespeare implemented this in various situations, yet

this obstacle remains, plundering all that it may.
