When I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 001, I did not realize all the changes that were to happen to me in just a short time.

In less than a week after I was diagnosed, a port was surgically placed, and chemo was started. Then soon there were to be side effects. Side effects happen as a result of chemo attacking fast growing cancer cells. Other fast growing cells in my body that were also attacked were in my blood, mouth, nose, intestinal tract, and hair.

I was given medication to help with nausea and vomiting, prer to taking chemo, which helped me greatly. The hair loss started within a week of my first chemo treatment. I remember my grandchildren and myself playing in the living room, something I could still do at that time, when my granddaughter pointed down to her toes and there wrapped up in her toes was some of my hair. Needless to say it was time to go to the beauty shop to have my hair shaved. Luckily for me my hair loss was not as traumatic to me as it was to some of the other women. I chose to wear a cap that my daughter had gotten for me, and inside my home I chose to go bald. I was a real beauty.

Infections were hard for the doctor to fight and diagnose, because the chemo attacked the bone marrow, which produce the white blood cells. My immune cell count was low and I ran a high risk of infections. I had an infection, which took three weeks of taking antibiotics before it cleared up, and the doctor never did know what it was.

The fatigue was something that I could not have comprehended. I was so weak that I could hardly walk without holding on to the furniture. No matter what I did I was out of breath. I could not go outside without someone to help me get back in the house. The steps into my home are only about six inches high and I did not have the strength in my arms or legs to get up them. I still have not regained all my strength back. At times those steps still look and feel like mountains.

Memory loss was a side effect that was hard for me to deal with. The best way for me to describe it would be to say that is sounds a lot like how Alzheimer’s is described to me as. I called it chemo brain. I would see a friend at church whom I have known for years and not remember their name or where I had met them. I could not remember doing things like when I last ate. As a matter of fact, I could not remember most of anything, which was very frustrating. There were times when I would be asked a question and I had to think on how to answer it. I still have a little memory loss, and at times, it is hard for me to concentrate. Like writing this paper because it takes a great deal of thought and concentration. It is very easy for me to lose my train of thought.

The way food tasted after chemo was also hard to get use to. Everything had a metallic taste or tasted bitter. There were many foods that I just could no longer eat because they did not taste good anymore.

When I was taking chemo, it was very hard on my body and there were many side effects. Some of the side effects were irreversible, and others tended to fade away. Those that were irreversible I have learned to live with.

Eleanor Roosevelt led a crusade for justice and decency. She battled for equality and power for woman. All subjects she spoke about back then are still relevant even today. For that reason alone made her a good communicator.

She was able to get herself heard by just talking with others. She was willing to talk, debate, and share her opinions with anyone who would listen. And she had quite a few opinions. Her principal message was that women should be equal to men in everyway. They should be able to have the right to vote also while in the work place be receiving the same amount of pay that a man is makes. She believed that women should not be discriminated against just because of there sex.

She used her column in the Woman’s Democratic News to voice her on opinion on several different topics. While her husband was calling for “Cutting local government (Pg. 7)” which would limit the money spent on education and public services that people needed. Within her column she countered that this was the time to utilize government services instead of cutting them. She wrote that they should take from the “proper sources” and from “the people who are endowed richly with this worlds goods or such profits (7)”. She wanted people to become more aware of the way the government was spending there tax dollars. She also gave several chapters in her book It’s up to the Woman on federal and local investments.

Another topic she felt strongly about was that public health began with education. She advocated for the construction of local clinics and hospitals. She also was in favor of sex education in schools. She believed both boys and girls should be taught it. Within her column she called it “family planning’’.

She used press conferences to get her message to the public. These conferences were guided and had specific rules “No gossip, No leaks, and No scoops.” She only covered topics that she thought would be newsworthy. Eleanor spoke on trade unionism and better working conditions for all. She also demanded the end of child labor. With a lot of work she and her colleagues were able to get a child labor amendment passed by congress.

Analysis of The Second Nun's Tale

The Second Nun’s Tale, a conventional religious biography, tells the story of St. Cecilia. Chaucer uses symbolism and imagery to manifest Cecilia as a Saint of God.

St. Cecilia becomes the archetype of the savior in this tale. She saves Valerian and his brother and opens their eyes to Christ. Valerian and Tiburtius in time become symbols of Stephen, the first Christian martyr. Cecilia eventually follows the two brothers in martyrdom, after spreading her message under much persecution. The angel at the beginning of the tale that protects Cecilia represents the potential of God’s wrath. If Valerian would have touched her or had intercourse with her the wrath of God, the Angel, would have killed him, ”he will kill you at once.”(Chaucer 0) Pope Urban signifies the ancient Holy Man/ mystic. His location adds much to the tone the character brings forth, “this holy, aged Urban, lurking among the graves of the saints.”(Chaucer 04) The old man appearing while at Urban’s hiding place exemplifies a messenger of God. The messenger’s attire and the author’s word choice show him a holy doer of God’s will, “an old man dressed in clear white clothes appeared. Holding a book with golden letters in his hand.”(Chaucer 04) Another physical representation of God’s holiness, the flowers presented to Cecilia and Valerian, illustrates that only a few will take the step to get into the grace of God, but the benefits give more than an existence out side of his will. The symbols of this account add to the tone of holiness that surrounds Cecilia.

The imagery of the Nun’s second tale gives Cecilia a pure depiction. The references to Christ support the symbol of Cecilia as a savior archetype, “Sower of pure counsel, Shepherd of us all.”(Chaucer 04) The imagery of pureness present Cecilia as one without blemish, “Oh, Lord, keep my soul and my body spotless, lest they be doomed.”(Chaucer 0) The different color metaphors depict the goodness of the Saint. References to white and whiteness again signify purity and honor. “The greenness of conscience” that she posses give her a natural, earthy and good texture. The redness of the roses given to Cecilia and Valerian also adds a sense of vitality to their cause. The images of this story add depth to the plot and characters.

Cecilia and the other major characters receive all of their characterization through the author’s usage of tone and description. The symbols and imagery used by Chaucer bring forth Cecilia as a savior and a saint.

Article Review and CritiqueAGILE MANUFACTURING IN PRACTICE: APPLICATION OF A METHODOLOGYBy H. Sharifi and Z. Zhang

We are ready to represent the best custom paper writing assistance that can cope with any task like Article Review and CritiqueAGILE MANUFACTURING IN PRACTICE: APPLICATION OF A METHODOLOGYBy H. Sharifi and Z. Zhang even at the eleventh hour. The matter is that we posses the greatest base of expert writers. Our staff of freelance writers includes approximately 300 experienced writers are at your disposal all year round. They are striving to provide the best ever services to the most desperate students that have already lost the hope for academic success. We offer the range of the most widely required, however, not recommended for college use papers. Get prepared and be smart with our best essay samples cheap and fast! Get in touch and we will write excellent custom coursework or essay especially for you.

The article by Sharifi and Zhang is outlining a developed methodology for achieving agility in manufacturing organization and describing its implementation and validation in two case study companies. In developing the methodology, the authors used two empirical studies the concept of agility (Dove, 16; Kidd, 15), and the conceptual model of agility (Zhang and Sharifi, 000) as their main references.

Basically there are three major stages composed in the methodology the determination of a company’s agility needs and it current agility level, the determination of agility capabilities required in order for the company to become agile, and the identification of agility providers or business practices and tools which could lead to the recognized capabilities for the company. In order to give a better picture of the methodology, the authors created a graphical form of the methodology in figure of the article.

In the first stage of the methodology, an assessment model is developed to study the conditions in which a company struggles for success and to provide a mindset for the company to move toward agility. This includes two practical tools, referred to as tool one and tool two. Tool one is used to determine the degree of turbulence with a range between 1 and 10. If the score is closer to 10, it means that the more turbulent is the company’s business environment, the more agile the company needs to be. Based on this result the second tool is designed to determine the level of company’s agility. There are two possible outcomes that can be expected from this tool Gap analysis in which a speculative interpretation can be made to specify the level of agility needed, and direct result which indicates the company’s weak points as well as how to respond to them in a proper manner.

The second stage, which is the determination of agility capabilities, is carried out with the assistance of a network model with which external and internal changes/pressures effecting manufacturing organizations are classified and represented as inputs. The agility capabilities required to challenge and overcome the changes/pressures are represented as the outputs. In addition to that, an industrial questionnaire and a series of case studies are used to establish the network connection

Finally, in the last stage, the authors identify a list of business practices, methods, tools, and techniques as the agility providers. The importance of these agility providers to various capabilities is represented by a network relationship. The results from the network model described in the second stage are used as inputs to produce a set of outputs representing the importance of individual agility providers to a company.

In implementing this methodology, the authors selected two UK manufacturing companies that had responded to the previous phases of the assessment work. The first company is a leading manufacturer of domestic cookers, which appears to be the only manufacturer that is profitable in this business. The second company is a manufacturer of high-technology electronics components and devices established to supply its mother’s company. This article review will only discuss about company one because the procedures used for both companies are pretty similar.

In the implementation, both of these companies went through the three major stages of the methodology explained before the assessment model, determination of agility capabilities, and determination of agility providers. For simplification, the last two stages are referred to as “the practical tool”. For company one, the result of the assessment model reveal three major points

• Company one needs a moderate level of agility, though it is not an urgent agenda.

• The areas in table I must be taken into consideration as potentially threatening factors when defining and designing the company’s strategy.

• The company’s perception of its level of agility is higher than the perceived level and than the average score of tool number two of the assessment model.

The next stage, referred to as “the practical tool” is applied in three steps

1. Determining the drivers of the agility. Table III lists the types of agility drivers.

. Determining the required capabilities. Table IV lists 0 prioritized capabilities.

. Determining the practices and actions.

Based on the practical tool this company has ability level of 6.5 and less, therefore it needs the following important capabilities sensing, perceiving and anticipating changes, immediate reaction to changes, strategic vision, co-operation (internal and external), products/services quality, cost effectiveness, and people flexibility. The practical tool also provides guidance for the company to choose the appropriate practices. Sets of practices that can assist company one to achieve the proposed capabilities are listed in table V. Table VI lists some of the practices that company one has adapted in responding to the change factors. These actions could have provided other capabilities which can be extended with further actions from the proposed practices.

CRITIQUE

Sharifi and Zhang have done an excellent work in developing a methodology for achieving agility in manufacturing and presenting details in its implementation and validation in the two case studies companies. They have also performed an extensive research and review of literature relevant to the subject to be used as a basis for the formation of the methodology to help manufacturing companies make strategic decisions in the pursuit of agile manufacturing.

Sharifi and Zhang have also made a great effort in collecting the data and information used for the application of the methodology in the two companies. These collection of data was obtained during the previous phases of the research by determining various aspects of the companies like the level of agility needed, the abilities of the companies in response to unpredictable changes, the capability required by the company to respond to changes in appropriate manner. In addition, data and information were acquired by examining the business environment, speculating the available strategic alternatives, and identifying the practices that could support the company’s approach toward agility.

Despite of its well-established content, this study is subject to improvements due to some limitations. In some practical areas, the proposed methodology still needs a more advanced research, particularly in defining the relationship between agility capabilities and agility practices. A more extensive study in identifying the exact domain of capabilities, the corresponding practices, and the appropriate ways of implementing and assessing the capabilities would provide a more accurate guideline for organizations in pursuit of agile manufacturing.

Another area for improvement can be found in the number and location of participating companies for this study. The present paper has only analyzed two manufacturing companies in UK, thus the application of the findings might not be appropriate for other manufacturing companies in other countries. Future study should definitely increase the number of participating companies from different regions of the world where influencing factors such as business environment, business practices, and the strategic alternatives available for the company to pursue might be different.

By and large, the study on agile manufacturing in practice by Sharifi and Zhang is fairly comprehensive and well developed in terms of its content and method used. The development and application of the proposed methodology for achieving agility in manufacturing is also well presented in such detail and appropriate way. Nonetheless, the proposed methodology still needs a more advanced research, particularly in defining the relationship between agility capabilities and agility practices. Although the proposed methodology is to be fully developed and validated, it still constitutes an essential effort in this regard and assists to bridge the gap between theory and practice in the agile manufacturing.

Group Paper

Diversity in Our Small Group

Diversity is an integral factor, which promotes and helps stimulate an open society where ideas and reciprocal efforts can lead to a group’s success. Nothing can healthily succeed or prosper with only one element. As in cooking, construction, and the labor force, recipes, establishments, and the collective thought processes of humankind and evolutionary thought are best developed when there is a multinational and varying ethnic supplement of ideas and efforts. When people are not able to support and work in a diverse environment, workforce problems and stagnant thought will occur. This paper will aid in shedding some light on the murky and turbulent area of diversity, what it encompasses, and whom it affects.

Different personality traits exist within all individuals. At times, personality traits will be similar between members of a group. This could help the members of a group to relate to one another. However, differences in personalities could be good as well. People do not need to have the same personality traits in order to work together as a team. In fact, diversity can enhance the team. Each member of our group is very different, but there is one trait we definitely have in common we all understand the importance of humor. In all of our presentations so far, we have used humor as a way to connect to our audience. We feel that we can still be professional without being boring, and humor is a way to make the presentations more interesting. It (what is “It”?) also helps us relate at our learning team meetings. Not all members of our group are humorous individuals; however, humor has become a big part of our group, and a part of our “team personality”.

The aspect of diversity within our learning team with regards to our geographical differences is something that we are going to explore throughout the course of Organizational Behavior. Up until this class, we have experienced togetherness in proximity and organizational behavior. As a learning team, our geographical similarities (“our geographical similarities” is not your learning team) brought us together from the first class where we all met. It has been the glue that keeps us together when other issues of diversity arise. We are all located in the north county within a twenty-mile radius of one another. The convenience of our proximity has allowed for relaxed and enjoyable meetings that foster open communication and enriched brainstorming. As a group, we can all share the burden of hosting our team, and find that we quickly agree on places to meet for productive interaction.

Our challenge for this course will be to accept the growing diversity within our team as we allow a new member to permeate our fortified alliance. We have accepted Prince as our newest member and the geographical difference that he brings to our circle. He more than doubles the radius of our geographical proximity. Therefore, he widens the spectrum for the diversity within our team in many aspects. This will create new challenges and cause us to grow in our problem-solving skills as a team. We invite the challenges, but acknowledge the difficulty that it will bring. As a group we will all have to expand our communication skills to include more computer time and emailing. We have discussed the limitations that phone meeting and emails present, so we must devise new ways to keep optimal communication, without allowing any one of us to feel left out of the circle.

Age has a great impact on the dynamics and viewpoints of our group. Our group being all around the same general age has a great advantage. We all are at about the same place in our lives, starting families, beginning years of marriage or deciding whether to get married. This allows us to work together with great ease and be able to be more comfortable sharing with each other because we have a better understanding as to where we all are personally. It also allows us to have a lot of fun while together and we have developed friendships outside of school. These friendships have strengthened our team. Being at the same place in our lives, we are all hoping to achieve some of the same goals and can support one another in achieving them. With the positives, there are also negatives. The down side to being all around the same age is that we cannot pull from pervious generations for input. The way this has affected us the most was in our last class. We were in a class with a group that contained members in there thirties through their fifties. All of us being in our twenties, we had a different view on what we wanted to achieve from the class. We came up with a business that would create fantasy parties for our customers. We got really involved in presenting our business in an exciting manner, because our business was all about fun. The presentation did not go over well with the older group, whose opinion of a business was strictly focused on professionalism and delivering presentations that could bore a crowd into a deep sleep. From that class, we gained what older generations view as professional and how groups should present their speeches in class. Being younger does not give us a lack of personal experiences but it does limit us to the knowledge of only the world experiences that took place in our lifetime.

Another area of impact where our diversity will impact our team’s effectiveness is the area of gender. Our team diversity has changed this class with the addition of our new team member Prince. In the past, our group consisted of one male and three females. The addition of a second male will impact how our team communicates. During previous oral presentations, Matt was often seen as a dominant figure as he towered over the other group members and his baritone voice carried better. With the addition of Prince, the overshadowing caused by a single male will be dispersed, hopefully allowing more attention to the rest of the team. While the addition of Prince does bring better gender diversity, it may also lead to conflict. It is possible that a top rooster syndrome may develop if either Matt or Prince vies for leadership of the group. The addition of Prince to the learning team has another beneficial effect. It brings better balance to the team. Before, Matt was outnumbered three to one, and as such conversation often drifted to off-topics such as childbirth, breast-feeding or problems with husbands. With Prince as a second male in the group, conversation may be more restrained to subject matter pertaining to our schoolwork. On the other hand, it is possible that a second male may allow for whole new areas of counter productive male-based communication between Matt and Prince. The gender diversity our group has can be a weakness, though through understanding we can make our diversity one of our greatest strengths.

I (Who is I?) can recall two examples where a lack of diversity and acceptance towards diversity will work adversely towards personal goals and the benefit of an entire company. A PhD in astrophysics was applying for the NASA space shuttle program to conduct orbital research. He was fully qualified but was continually passed over. He was a known supremacist with current and traceable affiliations. That, obviously, would not propagate the International Space Station ideas and principles. (This paragraph doesn’t flow with the rest of the paper.)

Recently, a former employee in some management position for a well-known cola corporation left and reported discrimination against people of color in that company. It is very unfortunate that diversity is most commonly associated with the racial aspect and not according to, say, diversity in one’s workout regime or photographic collection. In the world that we live in, both past and present, we cannot seem to move past the impediment ones racial, gender, and sexual affiliation causes in others. We must intrinsically accept diversity in all aspects of life, instead of just at the restaurants. You are not making any changes or building bridges just because you eat at an ethnic restaurant or listen to another group’s music.

Coca-Cola retains absolute dominance of the UK carbonate category with around 5% of all volume accounted for by its Coke and Diet Coke brands, with Pepsi variants taking around 11%.

Packaging

Just prior to Christmas 00, the Coca-Cola company announced that there would be major packaging makeovers by the end of 00 for Diet Coke, Coke Classic and Sprite. The new cola packs are to feature the famous Coke ribbon, while removing the Enjoy Coca-Cola line. This closely followed an announcement by PepsiCo that unveiled new graphics for its cola brands, expected to be in US shops around spring 00. In addition, the name Pepsi will, in future, be printed on the top of all cans. In terms of packaging, both PepsiCo and Coca-Cola have re-introduced glass bottles. BSD/PepsiCo introduced a 0cls glass bottle exclusively for the on-trade in 001 for Pepsi Cola, Diet Pepsi and Pepsi Max while CCE introduced one with a seasonal Santa sleeve for Christmas. In addition, a can with a dummy end has been perfected (and utilised by Coca-Cola although not in Great Britain) which allows for the insertion of a prize token, or similar. In addition, new technology has allowed for the use of different-coloured tabs on cans, successfully employed by BSD on its Tango brand.

- In 00, the brand was repackaged for the 00 World Cup bottles featured England players on the label and a St. Georges flag on the bottleneck.

- For CCE identifying products is a priority. To ensure the traceability of cans and bottles, CCE has chosen twin-head Imaje printers. For instance, we used to mark the bottler caps, and then Coca Cola decided to have the glass itself so that the message could be read even after the bottle had been opened. Marking is important as it enables CCE to have quality control and to keep track of our bottles and cans, making sure that the level of quality is respected. While the message includes a batch number, the date (day, month, year), the hour and minute and Coca Cola code that identifies the place of bottling and even the number of the line.

The narrative writing prompts that I have completed were composed for practice to improve my writing. First, I had to write on the topics that I was given. Then, by completing the prompts, I received scores to find out where my problem areas were. Now I am going to analyze these areas and find methods I can use to improve my skills in them. Subsequently, I am enhancing my writing. I have chosen to analyze three weak areas of my writing and give techniques that I can use to improve my writing. On each prompt, there were five categories that I was scored in focus, content, organization, style, and conventions. Each of these areas is an essential part of writing. They enable the essay to be read easily, and they help the reader to better understand the concept of the writing. The three main categories I found that I needed to improve in were content, style, and organization. I determined these weak areas by adding my scores together in each category from each of the five essays, and the sections with the lowest scores were the ones that I chose to evaluate. The first area I need to improve is content.

Content is the presence of ideas developed through facts, examples, anecdotes, details, opinions, statistics, reasons, and explanations. Content is an imperative part of writing, and I need to improve my proficiency in this category. After reviewing each of the five narrative essays, I realized that if I did not enjoy or had problems writing about the topic of the prompt I lacked sufficient content. I found this to be true because the writings that I received all of the possible points for content were essays that I enjoyed writing. Adding all of my scores together for this category, I received a total of seventeen points out of the possible twenty. This score conveys to me that I did not always show substantial, specific, or illustrative content that demonstrated strong development and sophisticated ideas. There are a couple solutions that can help me overcome this problem. One solution is to connect the topic with a personal experience. When I can relate the topic I must write about to an experience that has happened in my life, I find that it is much easier for me to think of and convey ideas. For example, the first writing prompt I finished this year had a topic of fate. I chose to write how it was my fate to become a dancer. I am very passionate about dancing, and the whole experience of me becoming a dancer could be connected with fate. Therefore, it was much easier for me to write about this theme when I could associate it with an actual event in my life. Subsequently, I did not lack content and received an excellent score. Another solution is to make the essay fictional. I did not try this approach to writing in the prompts that I have finished. I like to write fictional stories, and I believe that writing an entertaining paper would make the task more enjoyable. Having the prompt be similar to a story would assist me in including high-quality content because I can write more fluently when I am writing a story. For instance, one prompt topic that I received was to describe a storm and its effects on me. I could have made myself into an animal or an object. Therefore, I could twist the story and make the topic more pleasurable to write about. For example, I could have pretended I was an apple tree. I would have described the storm from the perspective of an apple tree. The effects would be easier to write because I could explain how the wind blew so hard that I was leaning over, and my apples were flying in the air. I believe that this would have aided me in including content because I could easily write about my experiences in a fictional sense. Although I do need to work on adding content to my writing, the second area that I need to improve is style.

Style is the choice, use, and arrangement of words and sentence structure that creates tone and voice. I need to improve my skills in this vital element of writing. As I examined each of my individual writings, I noticed that if I had problems connecting the prompt topic with my life, I had a troublesome time incorporating style into my writing. I came to this conclusion by reviewing all of my writings and noticing the prompts that I received all of the possible points for style were ones that I could easily connect with my life. I observed that it was especially easy for me to integrate style into my writing when I was passionate about the topic as well. I received a sum of seventeen points out of the possible twenty, after totaling all of my scores for this area. This score informs me that I did not continually show a precise and illustrative use of a variety of words and sentence structures to create consistent writer’s voice and tone appropriate to the audience. There are a few methods that I think I can use to improve my scores in the category of style. One way to do this is to brainstorm experiences in my life that could possibly connect with the topic before I start to write. I feel that this will really help me to incorporate style into my writing because I can select the experience that I can best relate to the topic and the one that I am most passionate about. For example, the obstacle writingabout my eating disorderseemed effortless to write. I am extremely passionate about the topic I chose as my obstacle, and the words just flowed from my mind onto the paper when I was writing about it. My style involuntarily incorporated itself into my writing. Subsequently, if I can always select an experience that I am passionate about and can connect to the topic I am given, I am more likely to have better style. Another way to improve my scores in the area of style is to make my essay into a fictional story. I believe that this would aid in adding style to my writing because when I invent an anecdote my writing flows more freely. Therefore, my style would most likely appear effortlessly as I wrote, and I would not have to toil exceedingly hard to place it in the writing. I find that natural style in writing is better than style that has to be intentionally added. I could have done this in one prompt that I had difficulty writing. It was the lesson prompt. I was supposed to describe a lesson that I learned in school and write about what it taught me. I feel that if I would have made the writing into a fictional story, instead of trying to connect it with a recent lesson I learned, I could have scored higher in the style category. I could have written a story about how I was a small girl, and I learned that running in the halls was wrong and dangerous. I could have incorporated an incident of how I was running in the corridor and broke my arm. This would have made the writing more fun and easier to write. And when I can write easily, my style seems to effortlessly flow out from inside of me onto the paper. Therefore, I could have improved my style and received a better score for the area. Style is important in writing, but I also need to enhance my skills in the category of organization.

Organization is the order developed and sustained within and across paragraphs using transitional devices and introductions as well as conclusions. This is an essential part of writing. Organization helps writing to flow smoothly, which aides in reading. Adding together all of my scores for this area, I received a total of eighteen points out of the possible twenty. My score in this category shows me that I did not continually illustrate sophisticated arrangement of content, and that I did not always have evident or subtle transitions. As I reviewed each of my essays, I noticed that if I was not partial to the topic of the essay, I had poor organization. However, I believe that I need to work on the category because I do not feel as confident in this area as I do in the others. I have found that there are various techniques that I can use to improve my organization, and I have chosen two that correspond with what I believe I need to work on. One technique is to write stronger transition sentences. I realize that transition sentences are a key ingredient to an outstanding essay because they help the reader to shift into the next idea smoothly, instead of coming to an abrupt stop with one thought and then suddenly moving on to another. Enhancing my skills in writing stronger transitional sentences would make my writing more flowing and smooth. One way I can improve my transitions is to make the last word of my transition sentence the first word in the initial sentence of my next paragraph. Personally, I really like this suggestion, and I feel that it would truly help strengthen my transitions. As I reviewed my essays, I found one transition in my writing prompt on the topic of describing a storm that would really be strong if I used this technique. The last sentence of one paragraph was As I lay, I could hear the storm surging outside. The first sentence of the next paragraph was The rain began to turn to hail as it fell from the sky. If I were to use the technique I described I would keep the last sentence of the paragraph the same and add the word outside to the beginning of the next sentence. Thus the transition would read as follows As I lay, I could hear the storm surging outside. (Next paragraph) Outside, the rain began to turn to hail as it fell from the sky. I feel that I would have had a stronger transition by doing this. I also like how the sentences read smoothly and connect with one another. Thus, this technique would thoroughly aid in my transitions, giving me better organization. Another way to improve my organization is to do more specific and in-depth prewriting. I notice, as I look back on my writings, that I used more detail in the prewriting outlines that I did for the topics I enjoyed writing about than the ones that I did not. I received excellent scores on the essays that I did better prewriting on. Therefore, I believe that if I give more details in my outlines before I actually start writing the prompt I can improve my organization immensely. For example, on the writing about a memorable event in my life I chose to write about the day that I had surgery on my wisdom teeth. As I glanced over my prewriting, I noticed that I mapped out exactly what I was going to write and put all of the day’s events in their respectable order. However, when I looked at the prewriting for the prompt on the lesson that I learned in school, I found that I just superficially outlined the idea of my essay. I find that it is much easier for me to write when I have a solid foundation to start with. Subsequently, I can make the foundation of my writing my in-depth outline. With both of these techniques, I feel that I can improve my writing.

To improve my writing, I have completed and analyzed the narrative writing prompts that I composed for practice. I found that not constantly showing considerable, detailed, or descriptive content that displays strong development and sophisticated ideas caused me to lose points in the content category. When I write in the future I am going to try to connect the topic with a personal experience or make the essay fictional. Not always showing an exact and illustrative use of an array of words and sentence structures producing regular writer’s voice and tone suitable to the audience caused my score in the category of style to go down. There are two ways that I plan on raising my score in the style area. One way is to come up with occurrences in my life that could possibly relate to the topic I need to write on, before I start to write. Another way is to make my paper into an imaginary story. Finally, I found that not continually demonstrating sophisticated order of content and not always having obvious or ingenious transitions lowered my score in the organization area. There are two strategies I am going to use to improve my organization. One is to write stronger transition sentences, by making the last word of my transition sentence the first word in the first sentence of my next paragraph. The second strategy is to make my prewriting outlines mores explicit and thorough. After examining each of my weak categories of writing and finding ways to enhance my skills in them, I believe that I have a strong grasp on what I have to do to improve my writing. Since I now have specific ways to improve my writing, I can put them to use in the future. These strategies will not only help me with writing impending prompts, but they will also aid me in all of my writing research papers, biographies, reports, essays, etc. Thus, I can use these methods of improving my writing all throughout my life.

Summer of my German soldier is a very captivating story and entertaining story. The book is very interesting and attention getting. The movie that is based off the book is also interesting but not as good as the book. If we compare the two they reveal they’re many differences in style, context, feeling, and emotion but at the same time, they reveal their differences. Through this piece of writing, I hope to show the similarities and differences between the two works of art.

Patty, the main character in both the movie and the book is very multi dimensional person. Meaning that she has many sides to her. For example, she has a side that always loves to lie to people, but she has a side that always wants to help and be compassionate to everyone that is around her. In both the book and the movie Patty is surrounded by people that she loves and people love her. In the movie and the book, there are also some people that do not love her. The people that do not love her still do have her love even though she does not have there’s. Through out both the book and the movie I began to understand that there are the people that make her feel that she is valued and some that don’t. At dictionary.com, the definition of value is Worth in usefulness or importance to the possessor. Both the movie and the book showed how people valued Patty but the book showed it differently then the movie did.

When I started reading the book, I met and very nice character by the name of Ruth. Ruth in both the book and the movie is Ruth’s family’s housekeeper. She does many things in the house for the family. As the book and the movie move along, I began to understand Patty and Ruth’s relationship. I understood that they are very close and tight while they also share everything with each other. Ruth shows Patty that she really cares about her and that Patty is of something of value to her. Ruth is always interested in Patty and her life. In the book, it was conved to me that she was involved in every aspect of Patty’s life.

Every day before Patty left for her days activities she always had a nice conversation with her and made her breakfast, which Patty came to love, and like a lot. This is how the book showed how Ruth valued Patty. The movie shows how Ruth valued Patty in a different way. The movie showed that Ruth did value Patty but in a different way then the book did. The movie showed Patty always eating Ruth’s breakfast that she cooked but it did not show them always having a conversation together. It only showed them talking briefly and not sharing in depth conversations as it did in the book.

Patty did not only come close to Ruth but she also met an older man named Anton. Anton was a German who was caught by the United States and brought back to the US as a POW (Prisoner of War). When he first got to Patty’s home town he was taken to a prisoner camp near the town. Then one day all the POW’s including Anton came in to Patty’s family store to buy some straw hats. Patty was in there and Anton caught her eye and attention. From there many things happened such as Anton escaping from the POW camp and Patty providing him with a hideout. This was all shown and written in the same way. The only difference from the book to the movie is that Anton shows and expresses less expression then the books expresses through the writing. For example, when Patty and Anton are in the hideout talking in the book their conversations seem more personal and deeper in thought while in the movie they seem like they have a conversation just to have one.

Not only does Ruth and Anton show that Patty is valued but also her grandparents show that she is valued. In both the book and the movie the take her in at the end of each and care for her and nurture her all they can.

At the same time, Patty has people that love her and people that claim to love her. One person that has a large part in her life is her father. Patty’s father is one of the characters that claims to love her but does not show it nor make her feel like she is loved by him. Her father throughout the book and movie gets mad at her in deals with her making him mad in different ways depending if it was the move or the book. In the movie, her father just yells at her and verbal abuses her while in the movie he beats her with his belt.

Overall, the entire entire book and the movie are two very good works of art. They captivated my mind and entertain it at the same time. They both show what it is like to be valued and what it is like not to be valued. Both the book and the movie also show how to value people in real life. Even though they are based of the same plot line, they share many differences, which makes them so unique.

ABSTRACT

The Mine Health and Safety Act came into operation on 15 January17. One of the groundbreaking sections that were included in the new Act is Section 1. In Section 1(1) (a) of the Act certain responsibilities are placed on any person who wants to conduct business with any mine.

It is clear that the legislator identified that the contractor would able to identify the issues that can be a contributing factor in accidents and cases of ill health associated with their products.

It can also be reasonably concluded that the legislator realised that, in most cases, the contractor would be in a better position to determine that an article is safe and without risk to health and safety when used properly.

In this article some of the pitfalls and solutions to some of the associated problems have been addressed.

________________________________________________________________________

1. INTRODUCTION

As a result of circumstances prevailing in the mining industry during the early 10’s, it was realised by all stakeholders that health and safety performance needed to be improved, and new, different initiatives would be required to ensure sustainable improvements.

The Leon Commission of Inquiry into Safety and Health in the mining industry under the Chairmanship of Judge Ramon Leon was established during 14 to investigate the regulation of health and safety in the South African mining industry and to make recommendations on improvements to existing legislation. The recommendations had to include the implementation proposals in the light of prevailing industry and international standards.

The report published subsequent to the Leon Commission of Inquiry listed a number of shortcomings in the Minerals Act, 11 (Act No. 50 of 11).

These shortcomings were addressed by embarking upon a new tripartite process to draft the Mine Health and Safety Act that resulted in the promulgation of the Mine Health and Safety Act, 16 (Act No. of 16). The Mine Health and Safety Act came into operation on 15 January17.

One of the groundbreaking sections that were included in the new Act is Section 1. In Section 1(1) (a) of the Act certain responsibilities are placed on any person who wants to conduct business with any mine. This section states that

“ Any person who-

designs, manufactures, repairs, imports or supplies any article for use at a mine must ensure, as far as reasonably practicable-

That the article is safe and without risk to health and safety when used properly, and

That it complies with all the requirements in terms of this Act.”

This Section has far reaching effects on doing business with any mine in South Africa. In this article some of the pitfalls and solutions to some of the associated problems will be addressed.

1. THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE CONTRACTOR

For the purpose of clarity, designers, manufacturers, repairers, importers or suppliers, will be referred to as contractors for the remainder of this article.

When one analyses the content of this Section of the Act a number of questions comes to mind. The first and most important is “ What does this section requires a contractor that designs, manufactures, repairs, imports or supplies articles to mines to do, in order to prevent them from contravening the Act?”

In order to respond to this question one needs to understand the context of the requirements as well as the purpose of the inclusion of this section in the Act.

It is clear that the legislator identified that the contractor would able to identify the issues that can be a contributing factor in accidents and cases of ill health associated with their products. It is also significant that services and or processes are excluded from the provisions of this section of the Act.

It can also be reasonably concluded that the legislator realised that, in most cases, the contractor would be in a better position to determine that an article is safe and without risk to health and safety when used properly. This implies that the contractor would know, or will be able to determine, what the correct way of using an article is.

The question remains, how will the contractor know, or determine this? The statutory answer to this question can be found in Section 11 of the Act. This section clarifies what the Act deems as appropriate response risk. Before trying to address this issue some of the other questions needs to be answered.

REASONABLY PRACTICABLE

One such a question is, what is meant by reasonably practicable?

The Act requires that the contractor must, as far as reasonably practicable, do certain things. For example, if it is not practicable to put suggestions made into effect, the employer should explain the reasons.

Reasonably practicable can be described as meaning practicable having regard to

(a) The severity, frequency and extent of the hazard or risk concerned;

(b) The state of knowledge reasonably available concerning that hazard or risk and of any means of removing or mitigating that hazard or risk;

(c) The availability and suitability of means to remove or mitigate that hazard or risk; and

(d) The costs and the benefits of removing or mitigating that hazard or risk.

This definition implies that the severity, frequency and extent of the risk is considered in order to prove that the contractor acted reasonably practicable in identifying whether the article is safe. It also implies that the proper procedure to use an article will be described.

ASSESSING THE RISK

From the above the question may be asked, “How is this achieved?” The answer lies in the methodology of identifying hazards and assessing risks.

Section 11 of the Mine Health and Safety Act gives a detailed description on the way employers have to deal with significant hazards and risk. The section includes a hierarchy of control that is aligned with the requirements as contained in the ILO convention C176.

This section requires that risks needs to be dealt with in the following sequence

• Elimination of the Risk

• Controlling of the Risk at Source

• Minimise the Risk

• In so far as the Risk remains

• Provide personal protective equipment and

• Institute a programme to monitor the Risks

There are a number of risk assessment models commercially available in the marketplace that claims compliance to the requirements of the Act. From the experience of the author, a number of these models do not fully address the risk assessment requirements of the Act, in that most of them only consider severity and frequency.

This is clearly posing a problem to contractors, as the Act also requires the extent of the significant risks to be considered by the contractor.

The NOSA facilitated model for risk assessment includes the consideration of the severity, frequency as well as the exposure to the significant risks in a practical manner.

One of the numerous outcomes of the NOSA risk assessment process is the generation of a process description or a detailed procedure of the activities being assessed. In addition to this the risk assessment process also produces a risk register that could ideally be included in the product information supplied to the mine with the product.

WHAT IS RISK ASSESSMENT?

The term risk assessment is commonly used in various ways to describe some method of identifying, understanding and controlling risks.

Risk Assessment can be described as a detailed and systematic examination of any activity, location or operational system to identify risks, understand the likelihood and potential consequences of the risks and to review the current or planned approaches to controlling the risks, resulting in instituting additional controls where required. Successful risk control can include outcomes such as improved safety, health, production, environmental protection, community acceptance, etc.

There are many ways to conduct risk assessment. One of the most common and accepted approaches in the occupational safety and health discipline is qualitative risk assessment. Qualitative risk assessment is part of regulatory requirements in many other countries for the improvement of occupational health and safety standards.

Qualitative methods of assessing risks do not try to establish numbers and black and white acceptability of risk like quantitative risk assessment. Qualitative risk assessment attempts to establish levels of risk only in relation to other risks, or a total system risk. As such, methods such as risk ranking are commonly used to establish relative levels of risk, ranging from a high rank to a low rank. This risk ranking is then used to allocate limited resources in an objective manner in order to reduce the risk.

CONCLUSION

Doing business with any mine in South Africa have been changed drastically since the introduction of the Mine Health and Safety Act in 16.

Traditionally the onus was on the mine to ensure that any article purchased was safe to use on the mine. With the inclusion of Section 1 in the Mine Health and Safety Act this responsibility was shifted to the contractor. Up to now most mines accepted articles from contractors without insisting on the accompanying risk assessment documentation. As the new Act becomes more and more established in the industry, and the supporting legislation are drafted, the mining Inspectors will start clamping down on mines and contractors not conforming to this type of non-conformance.

It is a known fact that the mining Inspectors have significantly changed their approach from physical inspections to a more holistic auditing type of approach. There are already a number of cases known where the mining Inspectors have utilised their significant powers to issue massive administrative fines or stopped mines from producing for non-conformance to sections of the Mine Health and Safety Act.

One can just imagine what the consequences to a contractor would be, should a mine receive an administrative fine of significant value, or being stopped for any length of time, as a result of a contractor not conforming to the requirements of Section 1 of the Act.

Reaction, Rate of, amount of a substance that takes part in a chemical reaction in a given time. Chemical reactions happen at widely different rates. The weathering of buildings and statues caused by acid rain is very slow, but the reactions that take place when a firework explodes are very fast. Most reactions take place at a rate somewhere between that of a firework explosion, which is almost instantaneous, and that of weathering stone.

Finding out how quickly reactions take place and understanding why they happen at the rate they do is very important to the chemist. Speeding up useful reactions and slowing down harmful ones can be important in industrial production processes, and in activities such as preserving buildings or foodstuffs. The use of domestic refrigerators and freezers, as well as cold storage by wholesalers, in transit and in shops, makes modern methods of feeding large populations possible by slowing down the speed at which foods decay.

The chemical reactions that take place in the human body happen at extremely slow rates when they are unaided. However, there are thousands of special proteins called enzymes in the body, which speed up these reactions millions of times. These enzymes are biological catalysts (substances that speed up reactions but are themselves left unchanged at the end). Without them, human beings and other living things could not survive.

Finding catalysts for industrial reactions is a vitally important field of research. For example, without a catalyst the conversion of nitrogen and hydrogen into the valuable compound ammonia in the Haber process would be too slow to be useful. An iron catalyst speeds up the reaction and makes the process fast enough to be economically worthwhile.

Other factors change reaction rates. If reacting substances are heated, the rate of the reaction usually rises; conversely, if they are cooled, the reaction slows down. In order to react, the particles in the substances must collide with each other. Heat gives them more energy to move around and so increases the chances of a collision. Also, when particles do collide, they are more likely to react, rather than just bounce off each other, if they are moving faster. Cooling has the opposite effects. For example, when sodium thiosulphate is mixed with dilute hydrochloric acid the mixture becomes cloudy as solid sulphur comes out of the solution (precipitates). If the mixture is heated, it becomes cloudier more quickly. If it is cooled, it takes longer to become cloudy.

Increasing the concentration of reactants (the amount dissolved in a given volume of solution) can have an effect similar to heating them, because the more particles present, the more likely a collision, and so the higher the reaction rate.

Particle size can also affect reaction rate. Marble chips will dissolve in hydrochloric acid more slowly than an equal amount of ground marble, because less surface area is exposed for the acid to attack.

The rate of a reaction can be obtained by following some measurable property that alters as the reaction occurs. Examples of such measurable properties include gas volumes, concentration of reaction mixture, and electrical conductivity.

Measuring gas volumes could be appropriate in a reaction such as the evolution of carbon dioxide gas when dilute hydrochloric acid is added to calcium carbonate,

CaCO + HCl ͖ CaCl + HO + CO.

The rate at which carbon dioxide is evolved can be followed by attaching a gas syringe to a test tube in which the reaction is occurring and noting the volumes at fixed time intervals.

By sampling the reaction mixture and the concentration of one of the components of the reaction mixture (either reactants or products) at regular intervals, the concentration of the reaction mixture can be estimated by titration. An example is the acid-catalysed hydrolysis of an ester such as ethyl ethanoate,

CHCOOCH5 + HO ͖ CHCOOH + CH5OH.

The reaction mixture is titrated at intervals against a standard solution of sodium hydroxide; there is a constant concentration of acid present as catalyst, so as the reaction progresses, more alkali is required due to the formation of ethanoic acid.

In some reactions, electrical conductivity can be measured, as this changes as the reaction proceeds. For example, during the alkaline hydrolysis of bromoethane,

CH5Br + OH- ͖ CH5OH + Br-,

the conductivity decreases because the fast-moving hydroxyl (OH¯) ions are replaced by the slower-moving bromide ions.

Other properties which can be followed in order to determine reaction rates include changes of pressure, for gaseous reactions; changes in optical rotation, where optically active materials are involved; and absorption of electromagnetic radiation, such as light, using a spectrophotometer.

Rates of reaction can be changed not only by catalysts but also by changes in temperature and by changes in concentrations. Raising the temperature increases the rate by increasing the kinetic energy of the molecules of the reactants, and therefore the probability that any given molecule will have more than the activation energy. Increasing the concentration or temperature can also increase the reaction rate by increasing the rate of molecular collisions.

Rates of reaction of solid materials can also be increased by finely dividing the solid. This increases the surface area so that more molecules can collide.

VI CHEMICAL EQUILIBRIUM As a reaction proceeds, the concentration of the reactants decreases as they are used up. The rate of reaction will, therefore, decrease as well. Simultaneously, the concentrations of the products increase, so it becomes more likely that they will collide with one another to reform the initial reactants. Eventually, the decreasing rate of the forward reaction becomes equal to the increasing rate of the reverse reaction, and net change ceases. At this point the system is said to be at chemical equilibrium. Forward and reverse reactions occur at equal rates.

Changes in systems at chemical equilibrium are described by Le Châteliers principle, named after the French scientist Henri Louis Le Châtelier Any attempt to change a system at equilibrium causes it to react so as to minimize the change. Raising the temperature causes the equilibrium to shift in the endothermic direction; lowering the temperature causes the equilibrium to shift in the exothermic direction. Raising the pressure favours reactions that lower the volume, and vice versa.

Collision theory

All substances are made up of particles. The particles might be atoms, molecules or ions. Before we can get a chemical reaction, particles must crash together. They must collide. This is called the collision theory.

The more collisions between particles in a given time the faster the reaction.

Effect of concentration

As we increase the concentration the faster the reaction.

More concentrated solutions react more quickly. The acid particles can only react with the marble chips when they collide.

DRAW DIAGRAM p.15

The acid particles move randomly through the water.

As you increase the concentration of the acid, there are more acid particles in the same volume. Therefore there is a greater chance of acid particles colliding, and reacting, with particles on the surface of the marble. You increase the rate of reaction.

What Role Does Trust Play In Shakespeare?

Throughout the quarter we have read many of Shakespeare’s works

closely and carefully. From each work we learned valuable lessons

that can be applied to everyday life today. Shakespeare is able

to capture humanity at its low points and high ones to create

the “average” society. In a sense Shakespeare is an advice columnist,

giving counsel to people in all walks of life. Throughout this

paper I plan to focus on Shakespeare’s guidance concerning trust

in relationships.

The most important facet of a relationship is trust. In many

of the plays the issue of trust is discussed. The first play

I would like to discuss is “Twelfth Night”. During this play

it seems as if everyone is in search of meaningful relationships.

Orsino is attempting to court Olivia, yet Olivia wants Cesario.

This causes some friction because Orsino trust Cesario deeply.

Orsino says “Thou knowest no less but all; I have unclasp’d/

to thee the book even of my secret soul” (1.4.1-14). This shows

us the blossoming of a relationship between Orsino and Cesario

after only three days. Though this trust is premature, it is

earned throughout the play. When trust is broken there is a

high price to pay, lost friendship or death in extreme cases.

Later on in the play when Orsino believes Cesario has betrayed

him he states “I’ll sacrifice the lamb that I do love/to spite

a raven’s heart within a dove” (4.1.16-17).

Another relationship that we watch grow from minor to major

is that of Antonio and Sebastian. Antonio does not know Sebastian

yet he takes care of him after the shipwreck. Sebastian begins

the relationship deceitfully by giving him a false identity.

When Sebastian begins to realize Antonio’s benevolence he tells

the truth. Even though Antonio has been lied to he trust Sebastian

so much that he gives him money, and risk his life to ensure

Sebastian’s well being. But when Antonio mistakes Cesario for

Sebastian, and Cesario denies Antonio conflict arises. Antonio

rebukes Cesario by saying

But O how vile an idol proves this god

Thou hast, Sebastian, done good feature shame.

In nature there’s no blemish but the mind;

None can be call’d deform’d but the mind;

Virtue is beauty, but the beauteous evil

Are empty trunks o’erflourish’d by the devil. (.4.8-)

Once again we see that trust is essential, and the abuse of trust

is grounds for dismissal.

In “The Merry Wives of Windsor” mistrust and jealousy fuel Ford’s

and Page’s “infidelity hunt”. Ford is the jealous husband, while

Page is the more confident. However, these two positions grow

increasingly closer as the play goes on. Falstaff trust his

men Nim and Pistol with his plan to seduce both Mistress Page

and Mistress Ford. And in return Nim and Pistol inform Mr. Page

and Mr. Ford of Falstaff’s plot. From almost the beginning of

the play we are aware of Ford’s jealousy toward his wife. This

is all unprovoked up until he is made aware of Falstaff’s courting.

Ford’s mistrust is deepened when he finds out that his wife

has invited Falstaff into their home. After many failed attempts

to catch their wives cheating the husbands are made aware of

the wives scheme to trick Falstaff. Ford feels so dumb that

he declares

Pardon me, wife. Henceforth, do what thou wilt;

I rather will suspect the sun with cold

Than thee with wantonness now doth thy honour stand,

In him that was of late an heretic,

As firm as faith. (4.4.5-)

In the end Page’s faith in his wife is reaffirmed, while Ford’s

jealous spirit is trampled. Shakespeare has shown once again

how important reliance is regarding relationships, especially

concerning marriage.

The Duke of Gloucester in “Richard III” is seen to be one of

the most villainous characters in all of Shakespeare’s works.

Though everyone in the play knows of Richard’s character, his

oratory abilities allow him to gain peoples trust. Richard’s

brother Clarence believes that Richard will come to his rescue,

thus trusting him with his life. Clarence is oblivious to the

fact that he is being held captive because of Richard. Clarence

is so faithful in his brother that he refuses to believe his

murderers when they tell him Richard has sent them. Clarence

states “O, no, he loves me, and he holds me dear/ Go you to

him from me”(1.4.18-1). After they speak badly about Richard

Clarence replies “O, do not slander him, for he is kind” (1.4.7).

Clarence meets his death while still taking up for his devilish

brother. Here we see that unwavering trust is dangerous when

it is not justified.

In “Measure for Measure” we are told the story of Claudio’s

imprisonment, his sister’s attempt to have him pardoned, and

Angelo’s requirements for granting a pardon. Though we know

The Duke and Isabella plan to trick Angelo, they trust Angelo

to be true to his word. Angelo receives his payment and does

not set Claudio free. Angelo abuses the trust of The Duke by

compromising his authority and that of Isabella by not pardoning

Claudio. In the end he is chastised, almost executed and forced

to marry Mariana.

In “Macbeth” trust in the witches prophesies is the cause of

Macbeth’s rise and fall. Macbeth believes he will be king so

much that he murders his king in his own house. He has his friend

Banquo killed based on his belief in prophesy. In his second

trip to see the witches they update him telling him that he should

beware of Macduff; he can’t be killed by anyone born of woman;

and he will be safe until Birnam Woods comes to Dunsinane Castle.

All of these prophesies are true again, but Macbeth’s faith

leads to his demise.

Finally we have King Leontes in “The Winter’s Tale”. This play

tells the tale of a King who plainly “turns something into nothing”.

Leontes suspects his good friend Polixenes of having an affair

with his wife. When he approaches Camillo regarding the situation

Camillo denies any knowledge of cuckoldry. Leontes deems Camillo

negligent due to his disagreement. The “green-eyed monster”

causes Leontes to distrust his wife so much that he has her imprisoned

without proof. He is so overcome by jealousy that he has his

own child abandoned in the woods. After he receives word from

the Oracle that Hermiones is chaste he refuses to believe it

saying “There is no truth at all i’th the oracle/ The sessions

shall proceed this is mere falsehood!” (..148-14). It takes

the death of his son and wife for Leontes to recognize his folly.

In conclusion it is clear that a relationship built without

trust is sure to fall. Weather the relationship is a friendship

or a marriage jealousy is capable of destroying the strongest

bonds. Shakespeare implemented this in various situations, yet

this obstacle remains, plundering all that it may.

Jack The Ripper Coursework Assignment.

. Source D is the eye-witness evidence of Elizabeth Long, recorded at the inquest into the death of Annie Chapman. It is Long’s description of the man seen talking to Chapman before she died. I feel that this source is very useful because it demonstrates how the ‘Ripper’ might have avoided capture. The accuracy of Long’s statement, regarding the description of the man seen talking to Chapman, is questionable. The man, who may or may not have been the ‘Ripper,’ is poorly described. However, this evidence is still useful in assisting the police, because even a general description enables them to eliminate certain individuals from their enquiries, so that they can concentrate on others.

Elizabeth Long appears definite in her first statement regarding both the complexion of the suspect and the hat he was wearing. The clarity of her next statement is questionable however, because she appears to doubt herself. She states ‘I think’ and ‘I cannot be sure’ when referring to the suspects coat. Elizabeth displays a lack of confidence in her ability to correctly age the suspect by stating ‘he was a man over forty as far as I could tell.’ This implies that Elizabeth believes her ability to asses accurately was limited. Elizabeth is unsure about the height of the suspect when she states, ‘He seemed to be a little taller than the deceased.’ This statement appears weak because it suggests that the suspect might not have been taller than the deceased. When Elizabeth describes the nationality of the suspect she tells us ‘He looked to me like a foreigner, as well as I could make out.’ This statement infers that Elizabeth could not clearly see the suspect, and therefore could not give a precise and accurate description.

To conclude, Source D is very useful in assisting my understanding of how the ‘Ripper’ might have avoided capture. Firstly, the man described in Long’s evidence might not have been the ‘Ripper,’ or a threat to Chapman, and this therefore questions the value of the source. If the suspect was the ‘Ripper,’ the description is poor, and Long appears unsure and confused over certain aspects. This level of confusion would assist in hindering any inquiries by the police, and would possibly allow a greater freedom of movement for the suspect. It is also evident that despite Elizabeth Longs vagueness, the police must have thought that she was a useful eyewitness, because they included her in the inquest which investigated the death of Annie Chapman.

Source E is part of an article published in a local newspaper after the murders of Polly Nicholls and Annie Chapman. I feel that the source is very useful in demonstrating how the ‘Ripper’ might have avoided capture. The source describes the experience of a man who visited the police ‘demanding’ increased policing in Whitechapel. According to the source, ‘the informant,’ visited the police before the first murder had been committed, warning that ‘murder would ensue,’ if levels of policing were not increased. This suggests that levels of policing in the area were poor. The informant was apparently ‘referred from one police office to another, but without making any impression.’ This information implies that communication within the police was poor, and procedures inadequate. The source portrays Whitechapel as an area with high levels of criminality and poor levels of policing, the effects of which worsened at night. Whitechapel is also described as being ‘a network of narrow dark and crooked lanes,’ which implies that a criminal could easily avoid detection or capture, by using these inter-linked and poorly lit lanes. Additionally, policing an area like Whitechapel would require large numbers of policemen so that communication between officers was successful. If policemen relied on whistles to alert their colleagues, ‘the sights and sounds,’ of Whitechapel would hinder their actions because Whitechapel was clearly a noisy and chaotic place. In addition, the raised levels of criminal activity in the area implies that the people of Whitechapel, in avoiding arrest themselves, might hinder police activity and inadvertently assist the Ripper in avoiding capture.

To conclude, source E is very useful in assisting my understanding of how the ‘Ripper’ might have avoided capture because it portrays the complex lay-out of the area and the chaotic nature of Whitechapel life. These factors combined with few policemen in the area would certainly have assisted the ‘Ripper’ in avoiding capture. However, it should be recognised that the ‘informant’ in the source is anonymous and the information contained regarding the police response to him cannot be verified. The journalist writing the article may have fabricated the story in order to sell more newspapers. If the informant did exist it is possible that he was a regular visitor to the police and this is why they took no notice of him. Finally, the lack of policing in Whitechapel may have been because the people living there were poor and unimportant to the police, this too would have assisted the Ripper in avoiding capture.

In this article “The Pearls of Obedience”, Stanley Milgram asserts that obedience to authority is a common response for many people in today’s society, often diminishing an individuals beliefs or ideals. Stanley Milgram designs an experiment to understand how strong a person’s tendency to obey authority is, even though it is amoral or destructive. Stanley Milgram bases his experiment on three people a learner, teacher, and experimenter. The experimenter is simply an overseer of the experiment, and is concerned with the outcome of punishing the learner. The teacher, who is the subject of the experiment, is made to believe the electrical shocks are real; he is sponsible for obeying the experimenter and punishing the learner

for incorrect answers by electrocuting him from an electric shock panel that increases from 15 to 450 volts. The learner is actually an actor who is strapped to a harmless electric chair. He is told several pairs of words, and must remember and repeat these pairings with

the make-believe fear of being electrocuted for incorrect answers.

The foretold outcome or this experiment was expressed by

several people who are familiar with behavioral sciences. They predicted that the majority of subjects would not pass 150 volts, and that a few crazed lunatics would reach the maximum voltage. This conclusion was disproved from Milgram’s experiment. The majority of the subjects obeyed the experimenter to the end. There were several reactions to the experiment. Some people showed signs of tension or stress, others laughed, and some showed no signs of discomfort throughout the experiment. Subjects often felt satisfaction by obeying the experimenter. This gives proof to the belief that many people obey authority to show they are doing a good job, and perceived as loyal by the experimenter or society, which ever the case

may be. One theory used to explain this experiment, is one of hidden aggression. According to this concept, people suppress aggressive behavior, and the experiment allows them to express this anger. Therefore when an individual is placed in a situation where he has control over another individual, whom he is able to punish repeatedly, all demented and hidden anger will be revealed. This theory is put in question, when a variation of Stanley Milgram’s original experiment is described. This experiment enables the subject, not the experimenter, to choose the level of shock for incorrect answers. The

results confirm that the majority of subjects did not pass the first loud protest.

Stanley Milgram believes the most basic lesson of this

experiment is that common people with no particular aggression, will carryout their jobs and become instruments of an evil operation. Most importantly, very few people have the constitution to express their

beliefs, even when ruinous effects of their behavior is apparent. This was explained in the experiment when many teachers showed signs of discomfort while carrying out the experimenters orders. The subjects were afraid to show defiance or arrogance toward the experimenter.

The order of modern society is much to blame for the problem of obedience. Society has bee segregated into people performing specific jobs that erase an individuals quality of life and work. To illustrate this segregation, Stanley Milgram modified the basic experiment so that there would be an additional person. The subject

was responsible for asking the questions, and the additional person was used to carry out the electrocution. A majority of the subjects completed the experiment and found the electricuter, not themselves responsible for the pain inflicted on the learner. This experiment helps reveal that in today’s world an individual is blind to the entire scheme but only a small portion, and is onsequently incapable to perform for the overall good. Because of this segregation, no one is

confronted with the effect of destructive acts. This is a disastrous flaw in the structure of modern society, resulting in organized evil.
