Easily the most culturally, politically and religiously advanced civilization of Ancient Greece was the city-state of Athens. Obviously, as a female, I would prefer to live there over brutally ascetic, ethnically barren Sparta. It was built in approximately 48 BC by master architect Phideus, along with the 40 ft-tall statue of Athena inside the temple. Athenian artisans also produced black vases, a rare, complex art. Lastly, on certain festivals, the city-state thrived with life. Huge scores of citizens, including women, came out of their homes to participate in the ceremonies and customs that were an Athenian tradition.


“Although not all persons living in Athens had these political rights, no other democracy in human history provided such a magnificent level of participation” (Leoussis 4). Yet another reason that I would prefer to live in Athens is the simple, direct system of politics. I am a firm believer in democracy, and there would be no better place to live than the city-state who set the precedent for this institution. Athens boasted a rare arrangement called “Direct Democracy.” There were no representatives, presidents, or panels. The qualified citizens merely gathered together and voted directly on issues, making it effortless to pass laws and decide, as a community, a course of action. “No man is kept out of public office by the obscurity of his social standing because of his poverty, as long as he wishes to be of service to the state.” (Pericles). Clearly, the democratic process of Athenian law was incredibly fair, and thereby admirable.


Lastly, the most conspicuous contrast between Athens and Sparta was the difference of world trade and communications. That of Athens appeals far more to me, for several reasons. While Sparta remained isolated from the rest of world in order to block cultural diffusion, Athens flourished with goods from all over the Mediterranean Sea, including honey, silver, wool, silks, and grain (Fleck 7). Products were brought by ship to the port at Athens and were then transported to the Agora, the center of Athenian life. There, shops were set up where merchants could sell their things to the wealthy people of the city. Spartans lived on only what they could produce themselves, making life not nearly as comfortable of that of the Athenians.
