Arthur Miller’s play, Death of a Salesman, is a story of the life lead by a traveling salesman named Willy Loman, who is defeated by his lack of success and difficult family life. Biff, Willy’s oldest son, is a well-known football player in high school. However, he fails to graduate post-secondary, and has remained a failure ever since which pretty much carries on into his adolescent years. Biff has drifted from one job to the next never being able to find stability due to having his father’s view of life. His father, Willy, has been known to find shortcuts to fame and fortune through his false hopes and dreams which contributes to his lack of achievement in Willy’s life as well his own. When Biff was younger his father encouraged him to pursue football rather than his studies to build character rather than the skills which come with an education to help make an impact on his life. “ …Bernard can get the best marks in school, y’understand, but when he gets out in the business world, y’understand, your going to be five times ahead of him…Because the man who creates personal interest, is the man who gets ahead. Be liked and you will never want.”-Pg. . Biff has spent three years in jail due to stealing, a fatal trait acquired as a teenager and a trait his father seem to encourage. When Biff was younger he stole a football from a locker room and had an argument with Happy concerning the incident, but Willy says, “…,stopping the incipient argument to Happy Sure, he’s gotta practice with a regulation ball, doesn’t he? To Biff Coach’ll probably congratulate you on your initiative!”-Pg. 0. A major turning point in Biff’s life is when he catches his father being unfaithful to his mother. This causes Biff to re-evaluate his whole life and see his father for he really is, a liar and a dreamer. Near the end, Biff accepts the fact that he is a failure and will achieve a different kind of success apart from what his father expects. Biff is a realist and takes the truth out of his father’s life which reflects his own to achieve success defined by his own contentment and happiness, a success not too far from his reach.

Happy is the Loman’s youngest son and is currently living with his parents in Brooklyn. Happy like his father has high expectations from life and is confident that he is heading down the right path. During the play it is evident that Happy has always been second best in his father’s eyes because in Willy’s eyes Biff was a success he wanted and never achieved. In the play Happy constantly shows off to gain his father’s respect. When Happy was younger he always told his father, “I’m losing weight, you notice, pop?”-Pg. , 50. Even when he is older he constantly says in one form or another, “I’m gonna get married, just you wait and see”-Pg. 1, 68. He’s says this quote as if marriage will bring him any closer to success. Happy supports his father and remains on his good side, even if it means perpetuating the lies and illusions that Willy lives in. In the end Happy cannot distinguish illusion from reality like his father and is destined to follow in his footsteps. At Willy’s funeral Happy says, “..He had a good dream. It’s the only dream you can have-to come out number-one man. He fought it out here, and this is where I’m gonna win it for him.”-Pg. 1. Unlike Biff, Happy follows in his father’s example and is sure to find failures which have tormented Willy’s life reflected in his own.
