Crossing Enemy Lines

Every generation has its own heroes that display, what they believe, to be ideal characteristics. These characteristics may change from hero to hero, but many of these role models basic ideas stay the same. Most tend to have courage, strength, and loyalty. All of these qualities are shown in Edwand Rostend’s dramatic play, Cyrano de Bergiac.

Cyrano displays the great ability to be loyal, no matter what the cause. A perfect example of this is the love triangle between Christian, Roxane, and Cyrano. He does everything they ask him to do, by writing letters for Christian, and by not messing up the love of Roxane. Cyrano shows extreme friendship towards Ligniere in the beginning of the play. When a hundred men come to confront Ligniere, Cyrano replies,” A hundred… is that all?”(Rostend 44). He is willing to risk his life to save a true friend.

Cyrano shows this courage throughout the play. When Cyrano could have wrote plays or poems for an enormous amount of money, he decided against it. He would prefer not to write at all, then to have his writings changed. And when lovers say the quote, ”I’ll die for you”, it is usually used as a figure of speech. Cyrano takes this to heart while completing Roxane’s letters everyday during the war. As Cyrano states,” I cross enemy lines twice a day, because Roxane is waiting.” (Rostend 446). Again, Cyrano risks his life, this time to keep love alive.

The grotesque nose that Cyrano possesses causes some hardship in this play. But the fact that he can overcome it is what makes him a hero. When a character attempts to make fun of Cyrano, he replies with a better attempt,” ………When is this monument on view?………”(Rostend 41). The most impressive thing about those we follow is that they really do bear human flesh.

A hero of strength, courage, and loyalty can be many historical figures. One of them is definitely the title character. Throughout the play he repeatedly showed these traits. This is why Cyrano de Bergerac is his generation’s hero.
