“Twelve Angry Men,” in my opinion, was a great movie. You wouldn’t think a
movie with twelve guys sitting in one room for a few hours would be the least bit
interesting, but surprising enough, the movie had action, laughs, and maybe even tears. I
thought the way the director filmed this movie was excellent. All twelve of the jurors were
always talking and arguing, keeping you interested on what someone would say about
another next. I think since there was twelve different men and each one had a different
personality, everyone was able to relate to at least one of the jurors in some way, making it
more fun to watch. Sometimes it felt as if I wanted to yell at Juror Ten for making some of
his racial remarks, and sometimes I wanted to stand up for Juror Six, the older man, when
some of the other men were yelling at him. I really liked the way the director showed each
Juror’s expression, and always kept the cameras on most of the men so we could see how
each one reacted and felt.
The changes made on the film that were not in the play, I think, were for the best,
and made the movie better. First, the jury was much more ethnically diverse, giving the
movie a more modern feeling. It made it interesting to see how all the jurors acted together
being from different backgrounds. It did cause a lot of racial fighting, but in a way I
thought it was good because it made almost everyone watching realize how stupid they
look when they make racial and prejudice remarks.
Another change in the movie was there was a woman judge, and in the play the
judge was a male. This isn’t very relevant to the whole story, but it showed how much the
world has changed since the year 157. In the play, they refer to the boy being executed in
the “electric chair” and in the movie, he will be executed by “lethal injection.” In the play,
the knife the boy bought cost $.00, and in the movie, it was $5.00. These few changes
give the movie a modern feeling, and show how our society has moved forward since 157.
In the movie, the foreman is more aggressive, and outspoken, which adds more
action to the movie. We get a better feel for all the Juror’s personalities, being able to see
what they look like and how they act and move throughout the movie. In the film, it takes
Juror 8 4 seconds to walk the distance that the old man testifying said he had to walk, and
in the play it took him 1 seconds. In the movie, a psychologist was also in the trial, and
testified saying the boy accused was a killer type, and had a homicidal personality. I think
this was added so we knew more about the boy, and how his mind worked.
In the movie, the woman who testifies saying she saw the murder wasn’t wearing
her glasses at the stand, but instead had marks on her nose that glasses make. In the play
she was wearing glasses.
A main part of the movie that was not in the play was towards the end when Juror
Three had a breakdown and cried. This point was touching to everyone, because Juror
was thinking about his own kid, and putting himself in the place of the boys father. It really
put a bit of feelings into all the jurors, and really added a lot of emotion to the whole story.
The last, and I think, one of the most important things that was added to the movie
was at the end. Instead of having Juror Three hold a knife at Juror Eight’s chest and then
walk away and ending the story like the play, Juror Eight gets Juror Three’s coat, and helps
him put it on. He walks him to the door. This point shows us that these two Jurors, who
were enemies for most of the movie, have made a connection. It helps the movie have
better closure, and doesn’t leave us hanging.
I think the play was updated with a new version because the original was made in
157, which was almost 50 years ago. A lot changes in 50 years, and everything grows old
and may need touch-ups. The new version had issues that are being dealt with today, such
as racism, and I think more people could relate to it. The play never seems to get too old,
though, and I think this is because the issues discussed in it are still happening today.
Everyone can still relate to each juror, and I think this play is going to be read for many
more years to come.
If I was to make a new version of this play, I think I would keep it the same. I
might want to change the ending a bit, and show the verdict being announced in the court
room, so we can all see how the boy responds when they say he is not guilty. In my
opinion, the movie was perfect how it was. It had many different kinds of people in it, who
were arguing the whole movie. It kept me interested, and for the most part almost
everyone is the class, too. Not only did it make me laugh, but it made me angry at some of
the jurors, and then at the same time just want to cry with Juror Three. In my opinion,
“Twelve Angry Men” was a great movie.
