As I, Gurden Jennings, sit here and write about my life and describe the trials
and tribulations that I have lived through. I am laying on my death bed for the
last major event I had to endure. It cost me alot of things I was very used to in
life. As you read about my life, sit back, relax and enjoy.
I was born in Winchesterfield, Connecticut to great parents Bonnie and
Jarden Jennings. I grew up on a little farm near the creek until about the age
of 8, when my parents decided to relocate towards the southern states. Where
it was believed that more freedom came about from being farther from the
central government. Since my parents were not very rich people, I did not get
to attend much school, however I did get an education of some sort. I was
alot more educated than my mother by the time I was 11 since women were
not allowed to attend school during her childhood. I lived with my parents
until about the age of , when I met a lovely girl named Mary, who accepted
my hand in marriage. There was much corruption and horrible doings going
on in the United States. Even through all the talk of the Indians refusing
removal we established life on a farm. We had one daughter named
Mary-Ann, who is the pride and joy of our life. I lived there and watched my
family grow up without many problems. Around the time I turned 40 I began
to pay attention to all the things that were going on around me and everything
that was happening in America. It was around the time that I was turning 4
in the year of 188 when the Trail of Tears was taking place I started to pay
attention deciding it was time that I knew what was going and try to protect
my family. It was a good thing for the Indians to be leaving our land because
we needed more for farming and crops during this time. However, it was
quite sad to hear about 4,000 Indians dying during the removal.
I stood back and listened to the news and kept up my cropping, I was
one of the wealthiest farmers in the area. I hated to admit it but I was
completely filled with greed. I did not see anything in the happenings that
caught my interest until a young man named James Marshall came about with
the news that gold had been found in Florida. I wanted to move there so bad.
My wife told me over and over that it would end up being a bad idea and it
turned out she was right. Around this same time my dear wife started to get
sick. She developed pneumonia and I did not want to leave her side at any
time during her sickness. Around the time Dred Scott’s court decision on
racial differences, in 1857 was the topic of discussion. My wife passed away
leaving me with an almost grown daughter and a broken heart. I managed to
carry on with my life and give my daughter’s hand in marriage away to a
wonderful man, which I had known since he was born. I was all alone and
pretty much bored half the time. Around 1860 a man named Abraham
Lincoln was elected and I was hoping he would do a great job in office which
he came to prove he would. For about a year things were quiet here in the
South but in 1861 an attack on Ft. Sumter began the Civil War. With no one
to take care of at the time I decided to become a soldier and decided when
my life ended I wanted to prove something instead of dying just a lonely
farmer. I left my home and went to war, during the beginning of the war the
Emancipation Proclamation was signed and slaves were freed. I sat there
sometimes during battles wondering where all my slaves had gone after it was
signed. I know not many of them had families, so I wondered who had taken
them in.
At this time Lincoln had required all males ages 0-45 to register for
service in the army and I was glad that my daughters son would not be old
enough to register. I had seen some very horrible things up to this point in the
war, things that would make even the strongest man a little sick.
I have fought many battles at this point and I was getting very old and
tired. I knew once the Battle of Gettysburg had begun it was going to be a
long hard fight. Just a day after the battle started I lost an arm and a leg in
fighting. The pain was so excruciating I let the whole world turn black and I
woke up in this hospital with bandages everywhere. I struggle now to write as
a I get weaker and weaker but I decided that someone should know how my
life went. Right now I, Gurden Jennings am at a hospital in Fayetteville, NC.
I am missing two limbs and coming down with a horrible case of pneumonia.
If anyone reads this who knows my dear daughter please tell her I loved her
so and that I was thinking about her in my last days. I will end this now with
love in my heart for my family and pride on my mind for the fight I fought
