Socrates the Philosopher

Socrates is considered one of the first philosophers and is well known for his way of teaching and his trial. Socrates was born in B.C. near Athens. He was the son of Sophroniscus, a sculptor. Technique

Socrates was an Athenian who used a unique style of teaching. Instead of answering questions, he restated them in a different way to help his students find the answer themselves. This method of teaching is rarely used today but is gaining popularity. The best source of information about Socrates, are early dialogues of a student named Plato, who wrote about the teachings of his master. “Because Socrates never wrote anything himself, historians know about the man and his philosophy only from the writings of others. The best sources of information are the works of his most famous student, Plato” Plato was still a young man when Socrates died. He went on to start a school of his own in Athens.

Socrates used a form of self-teaching to help his students find answers to their own questions through a series of questions. Platos pupil, Aristotle is well known for his work in astronomy. Aristotle also wrote some short technical notes, like a dictionary of philosophic terms and a summary of the doctrines of Pythagoras. Socrates started a long line of great scientists, teachers, and philosophers.

Many people regarded Socrates with suspicion. He was charged in BC with neglecting the gods of the state and introducing new divinities. He was also charged with corrupting the morals of the young, leading them away from the principles of democracy. Platos Apology tells of the defense made by Socrates at his trial. He was condemned to die by a small majority. Socrates friends planned his escape from prison, but Socrates wished to take his punishment, although escape could be easily carried out. He spent his last day with his friends and family, and in the evening he calmly drank a cup of hemlock to fulfill his sentence. Plato wrote of the trial and death of his master and friend, Socrates in the Apology, the Phaedo, and the Crito.

The death of Socrates was not mourned by many. He was well known but disliked. He had friends, family and was successful with women but many people believed he was corrupting young men and that he was crazy (he claimed to hear voices). Socrates was once married and he served in the army. Growing up he was poor, but had enough money to buy armor (not provided in recruitment to the army).

Socrates served as a soldier at Delium and Amphipolis during the Peloponnesian War, he dabbled in the political turmoil that consumed Athens after the War, then retired from active life to work as a stonemason and to raise his children with his wife, Xanthippe. After inheriting a modest fortune from his father, the sculptor Sophroniscus, Socrates used his inheritance to give full-time attention to inventing the practice of philosophical dialogue.

Socrates is one of the first philosophers and is remembered for his way of teaching and his trial in which he was sentenced to die. His unique style of teaching inspired his students. His most famous student, Plato, went on to open a school for Athenians, and inspired others. This passing down of knowledge brought about some of the world’s first great philosophers.
